Title: Dressing as a sly guy...
Post by: ChadinSO on January 28, 2007, 10:15:30 PM

I think being bald magnifies what you're wearing.

Examples:

In a suit, a sly guy looks really extra sharp.  Like what is this bald guy doing so sharp?

In some scrubby clothes.  Might make you look MORE like a scrub than otherwise.

In "normal" clothes, gym wear, casual wear, ect....you still stand out more than the other guy.

Here in LA if I wear a Dodgers shirt, I might look like a lot of other guys out here trying to sport that gangsta look or whatever it is they do.

Any thoughts?

I think being bald can accentuate certain looks because of the way you see most bald men on television.

Like you said with the Dodgers jersey (go Dodgers!!) because you often see gang members (Crips) wearing this in movies you can be seen as one if you're wearing one, especially with baggy pants.

I also think suits make you look really sharp, as well as most shirts with a collar.

If you have an athletic build, gym gear will get people thinking you're an athlete of some sort.

And, a Sly Bald Guys shirt will get you plenty of attention... 8)

In my experience I feel that it definitely accentuates the nice button down dress shirt/jeans or slacks look.

It also looks good in muscle/gym style clothing.    It sort of akwardly stands out with overly baggy/blah clothes.

Yep...good observations, Chadmeister....I've had the same thoughts, man

I gotta tell ya...I HATE that L.A. gangsta shaved head look...I drove a truck for a lotta years in L.A. and was a cabby there too .....and had run ins with those little pieces a @#$%&!

Most of them are little freakin punks that don't weigh more than a buck fifty soakin' wet...

I used to grumble to myself.....$d^vC

"put down yer 9mm and switchblade and let's go mano a mano, ya little....."  kn*%

When I first moved to LA I could not figure out some of the Laker crowd.  I went to a Burbank sports bar and each time the Lakers even scored a simple point the whole shaved head gangster group would stand up and start yelling, "whooo whoooop, that's my boy" and all this nonsense.

I was sitting there thinking to myself, pretend a basket is what you SHOULD make, not a reason to celebrate each time.

I think that wearing a suit looks really sharp and good for a bald man.
For my job I have to wear suit or pants and a collar shirt.

In my free time I prefer jeans or leather trousers ... but I have to say that a shaved head and leather trousers kind of look a little tough ... let's see end of the week when I am bald again. ;)

Black looks much better on me I've found. I used to wear mostly baggy pants and skater t's, but with a shaved dome I've been liking the way athletic clothing looks on me. Once every three years I don a suit, but I think it will def look sly.

Yeah, I like dark colors also.  I've been wearing a lot of dark polos lately for work.

I'd agree that a suit looks great with the bald melon.  Too bad I don't own a suit, I don't even own ANY dress clothes.  All work uniforms, athletic or casual.  I would like to get a suit, just don't have anyplace to go in a suit.

I have shopped around some second hand stores, found some that looked great, just didn't fit.  If I ever get a suit, I'm just going to walk around town with it on.  It'll make people wonder.  Maybe cruise through the courthouse a few times. 8)

Glad to hear all the thumbs up on baldness and suits.

I give dinner seminars and work with clients on financial planning and the "normal/usual" look is very "banker"....

I have a bit of a hiatus right now as I set up my new office...so I haven't had to work bald in front of clients/prospective clients yet.

It will be a trip...the first time to stand up there in front of the crowd in my suit sportin' the chrome.

So I'm glad to hear from several of ya that the bald look suits the business look well.

Thanks, mates

While a full dress suit is not required where I work, I do have to buy some nice shirts and ties in the very near future. It's a first for me, usually I just get by with some rented khaki pants and nice blue button-up with the Acura logo on it.

This is gonna be difficult for me, but they say we need to project the professional luxury image to our customers.

yea

That's ok, Rob and I are "good buddys" lol  :*))

In response to that Rob, I have quite a few customers who come back to me for that exact reason. They like the service they receive, and many of them make the comment on their surveys that if I were not here, they wouldn't bring their car in....lol (my own shameless plug) My anniversary at the dealership is this May, and it will be my 3rd. Since I have been here, we have gone through one manager, two service advisors and three warranty clerks. Many customers have said that they like to see a familiar face when they walk in considering all the changes we have seen in the past year and a half.

To answer your question about the car David, yes great cars. Many of our customers have been doing business here and owned at least one Acura since 1986 when they first came out. Our parent company is Honda, so the quality is certainly there. If I had the money, I'd be all over one.....like a......well you know.

I was recently dressed in a black suit aa work for a special event and received all kinds of compliments on it.  One of my supervisors actually said that he thought I was going to look goofy in a suit with a shaved dome but that I managed t pull it off.  Rather well I might add since his girlfriend spent more time giving me attention than hi ;D

P.S.  I Love my Lexus, those go on forever as well.

Like Infiniti is supposed to be the Nissan "luxury line" I don't like to bad mouth other dealers or lines all that much, but after dealing with the Infiniti dealer down the street I'm not all that convinced. Other places I'm sure it's great, but these guys have left a bad taste in the mouth of more than one customer or dealership in this town.

Pig, do you have a Nordstrom or Brooks Brothers in your area?  Before you start thinking $$$$ hear me out.

Nordstrom and Brooks Brothers have two of the best Non-Iron shirts ever!  Just don't buy your ties there unless you want to spend a grip.

Anyways, the Nordstrom line is called SmartCare and cost around $60.  Brooks Brothers is called Non-Iron and cost $75.  Yes, those prices are per shirt.  Though, if you can find a Nordstrom Rack or a Brooks Brothers outlet, you should be able to get them for about half that price.  These shirts are truly Non-Iron.  Meaning, you pull them out of the dryer, hang them, and then wear them.

I know these are expensive, but the quality is phenominal and will last you through 3 or 4 "non-iron/wrinkle free" shirts you'll buy at Ross for $20.  Trust me, I've already tried that route.

Also, if you have a Nordstrom Rack in your area, you can usually buy their SmartCare khakis for about $25 a pair and you don't have to iron them at all.

I you are looking for a less formal but swanky style. I reccomend getting a nice short-sleved button shirt. Solid colors only. No Hawaiian prints unless you are going to a bar, tiki party or on a boat. Save the Hawaiian prints for the cruises, casual events or Rob's house.

Also, remember that since we have shaved heads, you want to stay away from very light colors. It makes our faces looked washed out. A medium or dark color will bring out our best features.

Don't forget matching shoes. A guy should own thee pair: A black, a brown and sneakers.

You don't have to go expensive either to look nice. Macy's has some good deals on the Wednesday sales.

I have a 97 Acura 3.0 CL and love it. It still runs like a champ. I keep it in as best of condition as I can. I just can't justify replacing it. Still runs great, goes as fast as I need (v-6, never going back to 4 cyl. EVER), and love seeing $0 next "car payment" on the monthly Schro family budget.

As far as fashion goes, I don't think me going SLY is really going to change my wardrobe all that much. Although Hawaiian shirts are truly suited (pun intended) for certain occasions, that is just a look that I like and will probably stay with. I will admit, I do shave my face a bit more frequently than I used to since I have gone SLY. It seems wierd to have a shaved dome and not take care of the face at the same time.

The only place I'll differ from you on this Noner, is on shirt color... everyone has different skin tones, darker tones will look better in lighter colors, lighter tones will look better in darker colors.  Except for black because everyone looks good in black (unless you're bottom-of-the-ocean-fish-belly-white).  The best way to get your right color shirt is to ask the hot sales girl at Macy's (or department store of choice) what looks good!  Not only will you be dressed sly, you might get a date out of it to!   O0

Little piece of advice to those with Latin color:  YOU CAN NOT GO WRONG.  I have not run into one color that gives me Problems.  Now, BALD ROB has got it right though, YOU CAN NOT GO WRONG WITH THE BLACK SHIRT! But since there is not a way to go wrong, (1) its all about how you wear it.  If your looking for the Casual after hours look, role up the sleaves, and unbutton the shirt 3-4 buttons [your discression].  If you are doing the Business casual thing: 2 BUTTONS ONLY (It does not pay to go Maverick here  :x!)
(2) Remember, Loose Pants go with a shirt thats well fitting, and vice versa; Shorts: Longer Shorts, Longer Shirt and Vice Versa.  Dark Pants go with Brighter Shirts, and again Vice Versa.

My Money color is Brown.  But Black is worn by closers [AND I DRINK COFFEE](Reference to Glengarry GlenRoss, if you are a Baldwin fan I recommend it) so if you want to "close the deal", you can not go wrong there, But that is the only reason that you should bring out that big of a Gun, otherwise you look overdressed. I recommend having a Money color, one of those colors that it does not matter how you wear it, you can not go wrong.

Just remember, (3) Get the Head Straight, and your aces from there.  The rest will fall into place.  Darker skin tone, try a Matte finish.  Again, it all depends on your preference.  I role with the Matte Finish myself.
(4) Role with Confidence always: When your Gear is right, and Your Head it Tight, Confidence will ensure that you will get nothing but looks that Kill from the Ladies who are Drop Dead Gorgeous  b@n*  Close the Deal, Steal the Ladies' Hearts, Become an AllStar Player  8).  Good Hunting; Good Times, Great Oldies

I agree on the money color.  I get a lot of compliments when I wear blue.  People say it compliments my skin tone and eyes (which are brown).  My wife laughs because everytime I buy a dress shirt it has blue in it, unless I'm buying your standard white shirt.

Black always looks good, but it's good to mix it up with color once and a while.
Title: Re: Dressing as a sly guy...
Post by: MR. CLEAN on February 25, 2007, 05:43:19 PM
Right on Tyler.  But my technique is that I RARELY will bring out the Black, not unless I know I need to come out swinging for the fences.  I pretty much go with that Money Color more than often.  Its great to mix it up though.  Remember, its only money if YOU ROCK IT!  Rock it to often, and it just gets old.  I do not rock with the White Shirt much though, tell you the truth, if you are a man of color, it doesn't really work unless its textured.

I too think that being sly really accentuates what you are wearing.  I have noticed that my business attire for work stands out even more now and dark colors seem to look really good.
Here, I would have to say, its the Man that makes the Fashion.  If your Confident, IF YOUR A TRUE SLY BALD GUY, anything is going to look Great, as long as your Head is right.  Its hard not to be a fan of the CLEAN look (Pun Intended).  Find your Finish, and you can Bank on always looking solid.

For me, I try to bring the style based on the situation:  If I  am seeing an important client in my recruiting business its a well tailored suit, Italian only, french cuff shirt with cufflinks (I collect them), great tie, etc.

Casual dress for me is skater clothes...duh. (Only sponsors stuff or race tee shirts....)  I never wear anything that has a product on it that I don't use.  Period.

Daily work I don't see my clients so its almost always jeans with a nice dress shirt, untucked, cool shoes, etc.

Workout and the gym: From Soccer coaching days have a lot of Addidas stuff left over..and UnderArmour...

;D Great sophisticated pic, Dr. Noner, and great advice from Noner, Bald Rob, and Slickdome. Had some success with black turtleneck-cum-camel"s hair coat on the weekend. Black+dome=classic, but I think my 'power' color is burgundy. Silver, or stainless steel rings, rather than yellow gold. Shades, of course. Got a stainless cross with a diamond chip for Christmas, but haven't tried it yet. Wife  berates me if I'm freshly shaved and shiny but wearing my scruffy duds from before going sly--even if I'm only shoveling snow or accompanying her on a shopping expedition. Any advice about head-wraps? Professor Melon

This is too spooky.  I was reading the thread, thinking "gee I don't ever recall having conversations with guys about clothing and appearances", is this a "bald guy thing?"  No offense intended guys, I was just trying to come up with a humourous slant to the thread.  Anyway, long about page two of some very interesting posts, a dream I had last night came to mind.  I was shopping for clothes and in particular A SUIT!  I am 44 years old and have NEVER owned a suit in all my life.  I am a casual dresser from waaaay back.  For me getting dressed up is putting on a clean pair of spotless jeans and a dress-shirt.  So here I am an hour or so after the dream and stumble across all this talk of suits.

Shiny, I think it's funny that growing up I wanted a job where I had to wear a suit like a big time business man.  Now that I've been working for 7 years out of college, I do everything I can to avoid wearing a suit at all.  My current job allows me to wear jeans and a polo or button up any day that I'm not visiting clients.  If I am visiting clients, I just switch the jeans with khakis.  Gotta love software startups!

Heck, even billionaire Mark Cuban has the same thoughts as us.

Did you two have a man date and pick colors? ;)

I like blues a lot. And it is funny cause the wife is always picking blues for me too.

Ya that's it!  Boy me and my tin finger   :-\

But the worst part of the dream was when I got home in my new suit and my wife laughed at me and then the toilet had to be fixed so I went to get out of my suit and suddenly it had turned into a... (remember this was just a dream now - and a bad one at that)... a jumpsuit.  And the top was YELLOW with FLOWERS on it.  OMG I'm so  :-[

I look pretty good now in anything I throw on, but short-sleeved button-ups in particular look more sophisticated on me, especially with my glasses.  Bald just seems to go with everything.

I can't say too much here since I'm not really into the whole "style" or "fashion statement" thing.  I never did really think I had a "style."  Like I've said in another topic on the forum I'm mainly a jeans and tee shirt guy. But I do also like wearing button up thin shirts.  Usually short sleeve but some long.  I'm really also into the softer "island" type of shirts that button up.  I don't know if you know what I mean but they usually have some type of print on them that favor the beach or the some kind of island.  Any kind of jeans, or jean shorts, that fit loose or baggy.  I can't stand to wear pants that are all snug on my thighs and crotch.  Usually I rock the Levi's Silvertab baggy.  I've never been a big fan of Old Navy but they just came out with a new style of jeans called "extra loose" which fit me real nice.  Plus they are like $20 cheaper than the Levi's.  Then it's usually a white tee shirt, or darker now since I've went sly.  I can pick up a 4 pack of Fruit of the Loom tees from the local store for about $8.  Pair of comfortable shoes(my usual preference is Vans.)  But my favorite foot apparel to rock is flip flops or sandals if the weather is good enough.  I'm good to go.  Ever since I started going sly though I do like myself in black.  My wife says I look good in brown because it brings out my eyes.  Then again when she is mad at me she says my eyes are brown because I'm full of sh%t.  Hmmmmm.   ;D
