Apple refurbs are always a good deal.

I don't have much to add about the new MacBooks -- I have an older iBook that's still going strong for casual use, and a MacBook Pro for work. I know that a lot of people seem to be upset about the lack of FireWire, but if you don't need that, it looks like a sweet machine.

I've found that the older style Macs still are great machines.  Usually the redesigns aren't huge differences.  I got my 24" iMac two weeks before they redesigned them (argh!), but the actual performance of the machine didn't change much.

My church just got a new MacBook Pro three weeks ago... just before the redesign.  Of course it is still an amazing machine.

Apple refurbs should be fine.  I always get AppleCare with mine.  They usually don't have problems, but when they do they are very expensive to fix.  AppleCare is nice, three years of free repairs and free support.

The new MacBooks do have significantly better video chips in them.  But if gaming isn't on the agenda, you should be good with the older model.  I've got an old iBook G4 I've been thinking about replacing pretty soon.   Maybe it's time with the new round of updates.
