My Dad has the MPB pattern, and has been shaving with no guard for awhile.
As of a couple weeks ago, he is fully sly. Never encouraged him, just talked about shaving a lot.
-
dad has a bad horse-shoe. but he won't let it go. owell. love him anyway!
-
My dad had a horseshoe until he saw my shaved head. I gave him a headblade, headslick and Bald Guyz moisture gel and he has been slick ever since 8)
-
My Dad had thinning hair and a bald spot on the crown of his dome...
-
I know this topic says "DOES your dad have mpb...etc". My dad has been gone 9 years. But I was sly before he died. My dad had the extremely thinning version of MPB. If he had been in good health, I might have encouraged him to go sly as I feel that I look a lot like my dad. But he had Parkinson's Disease, so shaving himself would have been impossible. But he didn't like the sly look on me. He once told me, "Marshall, it looks like hell!". But I should say that BOTH grandfathers were bald. My cousin on my mom's side has hair like mine, if I grew it out. His kids have encouraged him to go sly. My uncle on my mom's side also was bald on the crown.

My dad has MPB, and about once a month still visits the barber. Last visit he surprised everyone with a short (about a #2) buzz.
-
MPB for my Dad..... I've talked to him about shaving but he thinks I'm crazy!!
-
Ditto...MPB for Dad AND he also has seborrheic dermatitis. Given that mom & dad live in Las Vegas, the air is drier than we have it here in Northern Calif. So, his SD is really bad. I've told him that I get complete relief from SD by shaving the dome....he still won't do it.
Oh well, can't teach an old dog ....................

My dad passed back in 1990 but he was thinning out. Would have made a great looking SLY GUY!!
-
My dad and my brother both sport the horseshoe
-
I am 24, my father is 51. He has started losing hair, nothing too significant yet.
I have lost a bit more hair than him.
I could never recommend him to shave it. lol, he will be like what the *** are you talking about?
In my culture (from Middle East) shaving it off is not typical yet.
-
My Dad and 2 brothers both have full heads of hair. I'm the only one in my family EVER to have MPB. Guess i'm just more evolved than the rest. LOL :*))
-
My Dad had thinning hair and receding hair line. He passed away at 51, but had more hair then than I had at 51. Both Granddads had horseshoes.

Was the milkman bald? :*))
I'm sort of in the same boat. My mom's dad was bald but not until he was older. Two of my mom's brothers are thinning -- but they are 62 and 70 years old. My dad's dad had all of his hair until the day he died. My dad is getting thin on top but still has a decent amount of hair for his age. Somehow I ended up being the only one to get full-blown MPB at 30-something years of age. ???
-
My dad and his brothers all had the same pattern of baldness. My grandfather on my mom's side had a full head of hair until he passed, so I know where I got it from.
-
yea my dad has mpb...i lost a lot of hair and im only 22 , so i said whatever, shave the sh*t off ..
my brother shaves his head too (my influence), but he has no sign of receding hairline whatsoever ... i guess im the lucky one with the hairloss.. yay to me .. :Xo! :D
-
Mine does. The way mine thins looks exactly like his. I know we've all heard that it doesn't really come from your dad but I have to disagree. In my case anyway. Because we're way too similar in the way our hair thins out. He lets it go naturally though but keeps it trimmed. It's like a little goose egg at the crown and kinda like a little island at the very front of the hair line if you know what I'm saying. Mine does the exact same thing.
-
I don't think there is a true rule to where the gene comes from. My dad (almost 70) still has a full head of thick hair. But my cousins, whose father is totally bald, were both almost complete fringes in their early 20's.
-
My dad (aged 73) has thick wiry curly hair: no sign of mpb. My mom's uncles all had the same hairline as me: very high at the temples. So I guess I got this from my mom's side rather than my dads.
-
From my mom's side, not my dad's. My grandfather on my mom's side prepared me from the time I was very young, "Grass doesn't grow on a busy street," etc.
My cousin on my mom's side who's six months older than me always has a hat on. We know what that means.
-
Well i was always told it comes from your Mums Father....which yes he was bald, & yes my Dad is also bald & so was his Dad...so it was always going to happen :)
My Dad has the classic 'Horseshoe' look, but for some bizarre reason he has decided to grow it,so at the moment he looks like a Freak!!!
-
I heard or read somewhere about a study that said you get MPB from either parent, but not both. Anyone else heard something like this? B@n%

My Dad is 50, and I am 22
he has been thin for almost as long as I can remember, he also now has a pretty sizeable crown in the back... and his hairline has receded as well.
My hairline is pretty much intact but my hair is getting real thin real fast, or so it feels. I think when I am 50 I will have less hair than my dad has now... actually I know I will, cuz I have already starting using the sly look and he refuses to do it.

My father died last year at 95, thining hair and thin since the 70's. He started buzzing his own hair when Mr. Lee, his barber for years, died in the 70's. I always went w/ my Father to Mr. Lee on Saturday, and Dad got the full treatment, towels, haircut, shave--I still remember the sound of the razor on the leather strap, the sound of a razor on his beard, the smells, the total barber thing. Dad and his brothers, there were 11 in the family boys and girls, and my uncle the last surviving sybling, now 91, remarked when I was visiting, "You're getting thin like your Dad and I!" Well my uncle's two boys, my cousins, haven't lost a shred, heavy strong hair. Whereas my other cousin and I are both sly by choice having been presented w/ the MPB genes. Go figure!
The last time I was with my father I had buzzed, and gotten rid of the high forehead that my maternal grandfather had. My cousins on my mother's side both have very thin hair and buzz it. But other than one cousin, no one else has gone sly, but we are two, and maybe, just maybe there will be a "growing" trend! Life goes on, I wonder if I'll still have to shave if I reach my genetically probable nineties? Most importantly, if my wife is still living will she have learned to live with it?
-
My Dad did the Comb Over thing for years, it was one of the reasons I decided to go sly instead, boy his Comb Over did not look good.
My wife had made a joke about the next time she caught him sleeping that she was going to cut off "The Bridge" and within a week he had the Comb Over taken off, He still sports a Horseshoe but at least the Comb Over is gone.

Dad uses clippers with no guard

My father died in '94. As long as I can remember he had thinning hair. As the years went by, he started shaving the noggin. Lucky him. he had the right head for the sly look. Oddly enough, as the time approched, Due to congestive heart failure, he for some reason also shaved his eyebrows. I never could understand that move? Perhaps the meds had something to do with it.
There were five brothers who didn't have the horseshoe but thinned all over. My mother's father was an American Indian with the thickest most beautiful hair you ever saw. All his sons had the same type of hair until they died. I don't know where this leaves me in the gene pool? As of right now, 63 years old, I still have thick hair but the very top is thinning. Any Ideas as to my path?

My Dad has the typical Horse shoe type thing, I have mentioned to him about shaving but he is not keen!! He lost his hair pretty early on, but he is confident in who he is....so fair play to the man!!
-
My dad is 70 and is only slightly receding.

bald where you from? im middle eastern as well. im half iranian (persian)

My dad had a beautiful head of silver hair when he died at 75. My mother's father, however, was slick as a whistle (well, there was a bit of fringe buzzed off at #1). I have cousins with varying degrees of mpb, but there are only two of us Sly.
-
My father is 60 and has the same hairline I do, except with actual hair on it. Fits him better since he's 60 I guess.
-
My dad is in his late 70s and still has a full head of hair, which he gets cut in a flat top. His dad had a full head of hair at his death. Now my maternal grandfather was bald rather young. My maternal uncles are bald on top, with thin horseshoes.
-
Horseshoes everywhere in my family... I knew i would be bald the moment I was about to think for myself
-
My dad has a full head of hair, but i ended up getting male pattern baldness because all the male relatives on my moms side of the family lose their hair.
-
im jealous of my dads hair. he has a FULL head of dark thick curly hair. no one on my moms side is bald either except for ONE uncle who has a horshoe.
i dont get where i got my MPB from?
-
its the same with me , my dad has a full head of blonde hair and he still gets haircut every three weeks, i wonder where i got the recedding and thinning hairline, i will have the horseshoe head by the time im 40, but id rather shave my head, i hate the look of horseshoe heads, i feel that horseshoes heads should shave their heads bald me included, thats one reason why i shaved my head in 2004 when the first signs of mpb showed up on me

It's the same with me. Hairloss is not always a result of heredity. Just know that you have other SBG brothers in the same situation.

Yeah, but the milkman might!! :*))

70, and thinned out hair since his 50's or 60's.

My old man has the good old horse shoe. Started balding when he was 18, glad i could take that gene from him. He's the funniest person i know and rocked the horse shoe since 21. I wish he were around to give me some encouragement about going through this.

Dad is thinning with a blank monk-like thing on the peak.

He's a great guy but a terrible father and husband. My mom divorced him for financial reasons when i was 5 and he just decided he doesn't need to be mine and my sisters father anymore. I mean i see him once in a while but usually just to help fix something or paint. This site has helped me more than in a few months than he has in years. How pathetic is that.
-
Sorry to hear that, Sean. We may be a poor substitute for a dad, but always remember that we're here to help you through this in any way we can.

Dad had MPB. My mother's dad (supposedly, the source for MPB) was almost completely bald with just some hair around the back and sides. Like me. ;)
