Been a sly guy I suppose for about 12 years now. Started to go thin in the top when I was 22 :'(.....Shaved it off then and haven't looked back. ::) One thing I've struggled with the entire time is either the shadow on the sides and back or horrible razor bumps when I shave against the grain on the sides and the back. Also my shine is blinding, but I've learned to live with that...... 8) So I'm hoping that you guys can help me feel at home and offer some words of wisdom.
I hate that I'm just finding this site, but I think I'll be here for a while.
(First questions...as appose to starting a new post. I use the Fusion, but I've seen a few post with people still using the Mach 3.... isn't 5 better than 3?? Whats the best blade??)

Welcome Ripped53. Post up and post often!

Not necessarily. At some point the law of diminishing returns begins to apply. If three blades gets the job done, then why use five? And the Fusion really only has four blades, because the fifth one is the single one on the other side of the cartridge for doing the edges of sideburns, etc.

Welcome!
I actually prefer the Sensor Excel blades (2 blades) on my HeadBlade.
-
Welcome aboard...
I would really consider lazering off the back and side..
IF it bugs you a lot..
go for it, I would love a shadow free bald head...sweet! O0
-
Ripped, welcome to the site. I am sure that you will feel at home here! As for the shine, I hope you were not struggling with the shine. Shine is what most of the guys here actually desire. But either way, you are welcome here!
-
Welcome ripped53!
-
Welcome to SBG, hope you enjoy it
I don't get as close of a shave with the Fusion as I do the Mach 3 or even a sensor excel

Thanks for the welcome Gents......

I'm seriously considering it, but not many places with experience in my area. Not gonna be the guinea pig for that one....Once I here enough positives about it and find the right place, I'll probably go for it.
There are so many products and topics and info....I don't know where to begin. I may have to rethink the head blade. My biggest worry is going against the grain is almost guarantee to cause razor bumps and my wife hates having to spend a week picking the back and side of my head with a safety pin every night.

There were a few dudes around here that went for the lazering and came out with real good results...
can anyone remember who they were...
I'm getting old and forgetful, ;) sorry..
BTW Ripped, the SLY look works for ya...a shadow free dome would look awesome!

Welcome Ripped!
I don't know anything about lasering, but one thing I do know is that shaving against the grain works better for me if I either shave with the grain first, or shave it down first with an electric razor.
Or you could try to add something to your routine, like only shaving after a shower, or exfoliating using St. Ives or a generic exfoliant. You can find plenty of info on this site about that under how to shave and care for your head.

Hello Ripped...Glad to see you found Sly Bald Guys. Tons of advise and information on here about how to keep your dome in tip top shape. O0
-
Welcome to SBG Ripped, great to have you aboard !! O0

Welcome to the Forum R53! I also find that shaving with the grain first and then against the grain is much better when it somes to avoiding bumps.
I know that razor bumps tend to be a bigger problem for some black guys so maybe some of our other black brothers on here could give you some pointers. I know there are products made to help with bumps but I'm betting you've tried them out by now.
I use a HeadBlade and get a really great, smooth shave with it.
Join on in and welcome to the brotherhood!

Welcome Ripped! Along with the right razor, what you do before shaving can help reduce the bumps. Like the other guys have said, exfoliating (as girly as it sounds) can help out a lot.
As far as the blades go, it really depends on your head and shape. I have a few ridges here and there, and I've found that 2 blades work better for me, rather than 3 or 4. I can get closer to certain random areas with 2 blades. I'd suggest testing out different razors. You'll find what suits you best.

Welcome abroad, sire! I'm new here too,but as I can see people are awesome and helpful.
I also have question.I have razor bumps at back of my head too,but...can they be "dangerous" in any way,or it's just esthetic problem?
-
Welcome Ripped,
Are you a shower shaver or sink shaver?
Shaving in a shower with hot water and then running cold water over after closes the pores and helps
to prevent irritation. Some even use ice cubes after. Exfoliating will smooth the dome and make it healthier as well.

Aloha Ripped:
I've only a SBG since July but love it-great bunch of bald, helpful, understanding guys.
I'm going to become more active. I use the Mach 3 with Edge shave cream. Overall its been great but lately I've been itching & scratching causing a rash on back of & upper neck. I think the main cause is the hot weather here on Maui. We moved here from Oregon on April 1st.
Hey guys how about the next convention here in Lahaina-I'll help make the reservations and arrangements. I better warn all the "barmaids" and "barflys" to get ready for the SLY.
T/w you all soon, Mahalo for the continued great info on shaving and the world in general,

Welcome Big Bald Kahuna. Post up an introduction!
-
Appreciate the welcome. I plan on learning as much as I can. My current regimen has been pretty basic, although my wife thinks I put too much stuff on my head. I've used just about every bump fighter as possible, but I don't really need them if I don't shave against the grain . Like I've said I've been shaving since 1996 and now I'm wanting to find something better if thats possible. The laser would be optimal, but I'll start with the basics.....I wanna try the headblade, but I've got 35 fusion blades and they weren't cheap. I also wanna try some of the Head blade products and the matte for men products. Anyone got any recommendations before I empty my wallet.

Ripped,
I'd get some St Ives apricot scrub or CVS Brand, headslick and use just aloe or Bald Guyz moisture gel first.
Shave in the shower- exfoliate-shave-then cold water rinse, and after you towel off use the aloe or bald guyz.
Give it about 4 or 5 days to see how your scalp reacts.
Sometimes less is more... unless your a woman of course...lol

Thanks Champ....I've tried the St. Ives before. It doesn't agree with my skin very well, causes some really bad acne on my face. I use a nuetrogena face wash and nivea shaving gel. I follow up with a bump fighter and some form of shaving lotion...I've got so many lotions I just use what ever I grab first.
Guess I'll just have to try and see.

Don't know if anyone's mentioned it already or not, but witch hazel helps. A lot of this is trial-and-error. Everyone's skin has different sensitivities so you may have to experiment a little until you find what works.

Welcome Ripped!!! Glad you found us. 12 years of SLYness - wow.

I'm with Razor on the witch hazel. I started using it on my face and since resuming the slyfestlye found it works well on my head. I also use an alum bar immediately prior to this.
One reccomendation that I would make is to not mix things up too much at one time. Like, only change one thing at a time, and give it about two weeks to see how it works out. This means if you want to try a new aftershave, try a new one, but keep the rest of your routine the same. Otherwise the cause of any positive or negative effects are not easily determined. This is hard when getting branching out as there are so many products available.

Tyler....its a rental LOL

Welcome, Ripped.
You are an awesome looking man; Love the tux!
have you tried Matte for Men or HeadSlick Matte to keep down the shine?
John

Tyler....its a rental LOL
No...no...no
It's all mine.....Got tired of spending the money renting.
Quick update.
The cold water rinse and going over my head more than once really seems to make a great difference. Not to mention I picked up some Shaver Secret. WOW......just tried it, and I love it. I combined it with my normal shaving gel and what an incredibly smooth shave. So lets see if it continues to leave my head this smooth without any razor bumps........
This site has helped me and my wife fall back in love with my baldy......I can't tell ya the last time I heard her say...."It's sooooo smooooooth!!!!" LOL

thanks John. I plan on trying the Matte for Men, I saw some HeadShick in KMart today, but didn't pick any up because of most of the comments regarding it being greasy and oil...thats the last thing I need. My scalp produces enough oil on its own.
-
Glad everything is working for you bro....I use the Shave Secret under my Headslick also and it does make an incredible difference.....happy to hear the wife is enjoying the smooth dome also.....good luck bro and keep it sly !! O0
-
A late welcome to you ripped, glad you joined us.
You've already gotten much good advice from the bro's, and I can only echo it.
I will strongly suggest you stick with the HeadBlade, once you get it down it's the best.
I also believe the less blades the better, and I am very happy with the Atra and their generic counterparts. I see no need for four or five blades.
I have used the Sensor doubles, but find they don't get as close for me. I usually alternate with the Atra's and the HB doubles. Occasionally I will throw in one of the triples to change it up.
Try different blades to see which works best for you.
Good luck, and the smooth dome looks great! Keep it. O0

Ripped53,
