I am here pleading for any suggestion from all my bald bro's. I NEED HELP! No not that kind of help, the men in white coats are still out looking for me...but that aint gonna happen. Anyways...you ever tried shaving your head in COLD WATER? Well I am getting ready to go down to Haiti and i will not have hot or even warm water. I have been trying different things here at home before I go so I will know what will work best...and so far there is nothing..absolutely nothing that I can come up with.
SO I am asking you all to give me some advice...tips..idea's....ANYTHING. If not...I WILL JUST HAVE TO WALK A LIL ON THE OTHER SIDE....
-
I'm assuming you'll have somewhere to cook...even if it's a fire. Heat up a pot/bowl of water and use that....
-
Take an electric razor with you?
-
I have tried to shave in cold water before and your right, it doesn't work well.....Have you tried an oil like Shave Secret and rubbing it in good and then put the shave cream on that? The only other thing I can think of is to go with an electric but there is probably no electricity there either....Hmmmmmm.....If I can think of anything more I'll let you know....how about heating water over a fire?? :D
-
Koz has the best suggestion....heat water.
If there are no matches, electricity, or gas in Haiti and you MUST use cold water, then some type of shaving oil/gel (KoS, Blad Guyz) would be your best bet.

If there is a Surplus or camping store near you Tim, get some heat tabs. These are Alka Seltzer size tablets that are great for heating up water. Just make sure they are in your stowed luggage though.
-
Hey Timmj,
I'm sure you guys have a similar product out there, but here in Canada, Canadian Tire has a portable hot water heater desighned for camping so you can have a HOT shower here is a link

Works awesome... I'd show you my review but I don't want to cause trouble :x!
Get it, it works. O0

Ok... you aren't gonna like this, but I can tell you from experience. I've been there, spent 10 days on a mission trip there and in the Dominican Republic.
You are not going to want to shave while your there, unless it is with electric razor. My reason? You already are limited on drinking water that is available to drink with, and you do NOT want to shave with their other water that is not for drinking. Their "drinking" water took our systems a few days to get used to (if you know what i mean) Imaging shaving and the chances of the "stuff" in the water being able to get right into your blood stream.
On a side note it is pleasantly hot this time of year. Day and night expect it to not get any cooler than 90 degrees at night, averaging around 95-100 during the day.

That looks pretty promising! And in the short time I've been here, Lucky seems to be the resident "I'll be the guinea pig dome, so the rest of you don't have to" guy :P
Maybe that and some boiled water to kill off whatever creepy crawlies might enter one's bloodstream?

This is a great point and I'm actually embarrassed I didn't think of it at first, considering all the info I give out about similar issues regarding new tattoos and piercings. If I just had to shave my head while there, I'd definitely be using an electric, I can't imagine being in a new environment and dealing with whatever crazy head irritations a freshly shaved head could cause.

Matt when did you go on a mission trip there? We are leaving Oct 10 and this will be my second trip there. We went the Spring of 07 and we are finding out that is it hot there right now. Thats going to suck. I just really am not sure what I will do while I am there. All I can say boys is that this cat might have to just let his hair grow out that week. I will be sure to send you all pics..

You can get solar heated bags for outdoor showers for like 40 bucks. Use to have one, worked wonders
-
i would use one of those but we have to hang it out side and it will probably get stolen.

It was the first part of October 2006 .... so yeah, trust me, It's hot right now. After being there for 10 days, I nearly froze when I returned to the states and went anywhere with A/C for about a week.
Don't feel bad about letting it grow out. I'm leaving this evening for a 3 day men's church retreat and don't plan on shaving the noggin. We've been told hot water will be very limited.

Did anybody else notice that IRONHORSE and NOMAD look to be one and the same person?......Hmmmmm..... very curious...........
Hijack complete............
-
No I have seen Nomad in person....Ironhorse is much better looking LOL....
-
I really recommend not using cold water, and there might be some nasty bacteria in the water too, so you really don't want to nic yourself i would imagine
-
Timmj.....just do a google search for portable solar water heaters.......Mother earth news has plans for one built out of a tire inner tube. I have in the field, used cardboard panels covered in aluminum foils and directed at a pan of water......The water does not boil, but the water does get very warm.......You cant shave in the morning, but you can get the water hot enough to shave in the evening........If you get desperate, get a can of black spray paint...when you get their, paint a garden hose, put both ends up at the same level, just a foot or so above the ground. Fill hose till water is coming out of each end and let it bake in the sun for a couple of hours........tada...hot water.........
-
Damn you all have some good ideas...
-
My 2 cents...
You on a friggin island and its 100 degrees, in the tropics = tropical waters = warm salty water.
Take the headslick and razor to the beach and shave in the surf!!
Maybe you'll see "Wilson" floating by and you can yell for him... Willlllsonnnnnn! :D
-
thats even better....heck they all swim nude ....When in Rome do as the Romans..ehh?

That would actually be my suggestion as well. Even if you do heat up the water.

we found out on Monday that the generator used to supply electricity to the neighborhood we are staying is has broken down. They are working on it, but having it back up and running by the time we get there is looking fairly slim. A request for batteries has been issued. So we may have more on our plate than we thought when we get there. I think I have just come to the conclusion that I am going to give myself a nice good shave on Saturday morning in Miami on the 11th, and let it go for a week. We get back into Miami on the 18th...so maybe it wont be so bad. If i find the opportunity to shave it during the week, I will. And too...Its not about ME while I am there anyways, dont you all agree?
-
Agree with you Tim. Besides, it's not like they have shave police watching you or something... :D
-
You never know though....with the UN down there, its hard to tell what they are up too. Most of the people in Haiti have either very low cuts or are buzzed all the way down. If worse comes to worse I can go to the local barber there like I did the last time and they can use the clippers on it to buzz it down if it gets too long. They use razors down there but as I sat and watched them shave a guys head, all they used was a single double edge blade between their fingers. I would not trust that for nothing. It was amazing though, the barber shaved it all off witout a cut.
-
WOW....now that's impressive, although I'm not sure I would trust them doing my head like that ..... :-\
-
Oh dont worry, I wont be. He ( the barber) wanted to touch up around my neck with the razor when I was there the last time, I told him I would rather not, i liked it when there was hair on my neck LOL.
-
I'd just grow it out Timmay - I tried shaving with cold water during the power outage and it was not fun... also with the likely bacteria in their water probably wouldn't be a good idea - also your own water supply will probably be limited. You're doing a great thing so just take comfort in the fact that you can shave when you get back to the States - it'll give you something to look forward to.
-
Scott....damnit..you make it seem so easy. Growing my hair out for a week...that is just unheard of. I will just have to do what I gotta do.
-
Timmy, If you are really committed to this, you can always take along the can of nair. Just an idea...... :/O
-
Nair! NAIR! how can you mention that word. That sh*t took all the hair off my back along with my butt and everything below my waist. I tried Nair'n my back in the shower last night ...BY MYSELF! Never again.
Hey everyone RICK HAS A FULL HEAD OF HAIR! lol

Hey buddy, even before I was SLY that wasn't a true statement.
-
hey timmy: get an electric razor. O0 i don't think that i can go that long without shaving.
WARHAWK O0
-
Mel, we heard on monday that the generator that supplies power to where we are going to be has broken down. THey do not know if it will be fixed by the time we get there.
-
You need to get the battery powered electric. Only about $10 at Wal-Mart. Not the best shave ( I am sure) but will do in a pinch.
-
be a man! use a sharp rock! >:D
