Title: Fiance, girlfriend, my broad?
Post by: time2shine on September 17, 2008, 06:14:20 PM
I'm getting married next summer, and I feel weird when i say "fiance".  For some reason it feels cheesy or too traditional to me.
Some people have told me, "You better not let her hear that you called her your girlfriend, she will be offended!! (gasp)"
well she feels the same way, so we're sticking with boyfriend/girlfriend.
What's your take on these titles?  Where did the term Fiance come from anyways?  I could hit up wikipedia, but you guys are a more credible source.

I always felt weird with "fiance" too.  I introduced her as "My future bride".

Damn, I'm a romantic summmavabitch.  O:O

By the way, it's our wedding anniversary today.........13 years! She's the best thing that ever happend to me.
We went out for a very nice lunch, and I'm throwing down a serious barbeque this evening.

I agree 100%. Fiancé seemed weird to me too. Especially since we both had to call each other Fiancé/fiancée (pronounced the same... that's odd right there). This borrowed French word isn't even pronounced correctly by most Americans (myself included).

WIKI: "A man who is engaged to be married is called his partner's fiancé; a woman similarly engaged is called her partner's fiancée. These words are pronounced identically in English; the separate feminine form exists because of the inflectional morphology of grammatical gender in French, where the term originated."

I'd rather:

This is my girlfriend (insert name), were getting married next (insert date)
This is my sweetheart (insert name), were getting married next (insert date)
This is my future wife (insert name), were getting married next (insert date)
This is my _________ (insert name), were getting married next (insert date)

When I was engaged I did use fiancée often but it seemed to depend when and where. I tended to use it more around seniors.

Could be a hidden meaning  :(

I always introduced Kris as my tag-a-long.  LOL  No but seriously, just like PowerofKRAFTcheese...lol  I would use Fiancee when needed but normally would say this is my soon to be wife/maid/friend/maid/partner/maid.  Some how though after 16 years....i think the maid has kinda been slipping out on me.

LOL...  start the ticker, Champ!

glad u guys agree about nixing the fiance term.  Future bride is a good one..  I don't feel french when i say it.

Appreciate the wikipedia explaination Cheese - didn't even know there was separate spelling for the man and woman.... weird.

And congrationlations, Schro!

I am very happy for you, good luck!

My suggestion (and I am DUMB) is simply do not introduce her to anyone, act as though you forgot! If she wants to step up and tell folks who she is, you can just say, "Oh Yeah, OOPS"! After about three or four times she will introduce herself right away, or you will be single again, WooHoo!   O0

How 'bout "this is some chick I slept with a couple of times and she won't go home" or would that be to long of an intro?

Maybe a bit long....

Might want to save that intro just for the clergy.  :*))

Seriously..

Fiance?   Never gave it much thought when I was engaged.
