Title: Should I switch to Headblade? (Mach 3 vs Headblade)
Post by: Dome of Steele on September 17, 2008, 12:25:42 AM
I've been using Mach 3's for a year and I'm happy with the shave I get.  (I've tried to economize with cheapy razors and it's been a bloody irritating nightmare).  I can use a Mach 3 blade for awhile before it gets dulled and I just use standard sensitive skin shaving cream.

I don't hangout with slys very often so I joined this forum to get a broader base of headcare knowledge.
I learned about the Headblade from here.  Is it that much better than the Mach 3?

What I'd like to know is do you save time compared to a Mach 3?
Is it more expensive to maintain than a Mach 3?  (changing blades, lube/cream products etc?)

I was about to by a 20 pack of Mach 3 blades on ebay for 25 bucks, but I'll hold off until I get some advice from yall.

I have been using my Head Blade for like a solid week and a half, ;D and a Mach Three once(about 4 hours ago) That Mach three was pretty nice, I must say! The Head Blade gets real gunked-up on me, and I try to rinse every pass! (my hair is like piano wire!)

i like the shave i get with the headblade. but it is just easier for me to use my mach 3. every now and then i will use my headblade. (i only have three)  for some reason though, the classic does better for me than the sport. not sure why.  i say whatever you are comfortable with. welcome by the way. nice coon on your shoulder.

Yeah it's a raccoon.  I was trying to use him as a hairpiece but he kept nibbling on my ear.
So far I'm leaning toward staying with the Mach 3.

I can shave faster with my Head Blade, but like I said I have only used the Mach3 once, I'm sure it would get easier. Where did you get the racoon? We had one that was injured for a while in Tucson at the Security Police building, it was really cool! We fed it turkey lunch meat, it would dunk it in water before it ate. Does yours wash its food?

Welcome DS!

I personally think the HeadBlade is a faster shave. ANy closer.....I don't know.... but certainly easier ergonomically to use.

Raccoons have to love bald heads... I've already seen a clip on Youtube
about a bald fellow with a raccoon... ;) but guess it's not you...

I use both. First, the Headblade for the bulk of it, and then I followup with any not-as-smooth-as-I-want-it areas with the Mach III or similar. I also use the regular blade for the area right behind the ears and for my face.

I guess I never did a proper introduction.

Intro:
I've been sly for about a year and I buzzed it a few months before that.  I've moved around alot, mostly in the South and I currently reside in Oklahoma to finish up grad school.
I actually searched the internet before I shaved my head then and came across this site and I was given some inspiration to finally take the plunge.  I never looked back and my life is much better now and everyone loves the look.  it's always a topic of discussion when meeting strangers and I have an instant topic of conversation with any other sly guy.  I look forward to use the site for headcare tips, new products, to inspire those young ones with MPB and just for good conversation.

About the raccoon:  I was visiting a friend in Arkansas and her landlady saved this orphaned baby coon and has raised it up to eventually release it.  He was constantly crawling around, when you pick him up he can't sit still and he'll pull on your clothes and hair (not a problem for me).  He will eat anything and he makes weird croaking noises.

About Headblade:  I think I'll try it out, it's not too expensive and I'll probably use the headblade then follow up around the ears and neck with the Mach 3.

Thanks for some info on the subject guys!

You won't know until you try it, and give it some time, going slowly initially.  I was a HB convert from day one... quickest easiest shave I have had, and cheap blades too.  Welcome aboard, by the way.

OK, yall have convinced me (did I give away my upbringing?).  I will order a headblade, it's not too bad of a price.  I watched a youtube of a guy using one and it looked nice.  I'm gonna probably do the behind the ears with the Mach 3.

In other news a guy asked me if he should go sly and he says he did.  I haven't seen any pics yet but I'll try to get him in on the page.

Dude.... no need to order it. Go to Walmart... they have them for about $10. They usually have HeadSlick too.

I would recommend the headblade as long as you use sensor 3 blades.  I get a much better shave with the headblade and the sensor 3 blades don't gunk up much.

I gotta say fellas That after using the Mach3 for a few days now, I really like it! I was starting with my HB, then cleaning it all up with the Mach3, but the last few times just used the Mach3 by itself. (first shave ever was the HB) The only reason I even have Mach3 razors is because my Mom bought them for my Dad, and he hated them. I have always shaved my face with Gillette Sensors, and still hit around my ears with them.

I like to draw, and paint and feel like I have more control with the long handle rather than the HB's placement in my hand. I will keep using both till my blades run out and then will decide what to stock up on.

Alright guys,  I bought a Headblade at Walgreens (it was $11 I think, and I couldn't find it at my WalM).

My first impression was good, I'll give awhile before I give a complete analysis as well.
The HB seems to be good for the top and front of the head; after making those sweeps it is still necessary to go against the grain on the sides to really get close.  (I like that shiny smooth look and feel; and so do the ladies)

I could see how many guys wouldn't like the HB at first bc the mechanics of using it are so different from a conventional razor.  But I like the feel of it, it makes the razor an extension of my hand.
I will still keep my Mach 3 too though.

My 2 cents worth:

I, personally, had only bad experiences with the HB and used it only a  handful of times before relegating it to the back of the drawer. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't avoid nicking my dome. And the time I was in a hurry?

http://www.flickr.com/photos/crossley/515455291/  (No that's not really me :P)

I used a mach 3 for years, before switching to a 4 blade razor, and have been very happy with both - But in the end, it's all about what works best for you. I guess I'm just too "ham handed" for a HB.

I am by no means an expert,,, the TWO times I have used my Head Blade have been good experiences. It works great when using Head Slick,, but that may have been because the FIRST time I used regular shaving cream,, and I was slightly more comfortable when I shaved the second time. I have never tried anything else.

Hello D.O.S. Im Gabe Ive had my head shaved for about I'll say month and a half. And now I really am inspired about HB! however, there is a few spots on my dome that require special attention i.e. if you were to talk to me directly you would see a point at the very back on top of it and on the sides of that point I always have to use special attention, but yesterday I was at Wal-Mart looking at some DVD's and I saw "HITMAN" the movie, so i looke at it and a older women (not a "cougar") got right up on my shoulder, practically behind right behind me on my left side and as she passed left me, I said to her "I was told that I looked like this guy and she said you do alot" and later I asked her "how"? and she told me the face a good bit and the way my scalp is shaped and my forehead. I thought it was only a game to. But it was nice I realy enjoy it, and not only that but, it gets annoying sometimes to do it every night. But I learned my lesson on waiting to shave it every 2 days, not good. How ever I havent been on in a while, and Im from Georgia. I use the Schick comfort shave theyre the greenish blue ones with 3 blades on them they are in a pack of 8 I believe.

Welcome to the forum Steele.

Experimentation is the best avenue for your personal results.

Personally, I love the Headblade combined w/ the power of Fusion.   :@`

Overkill- maybe, but the RESULTS speak for themselves!!!

Had the same pain and misfortune with the headblade as Ironhorse.
I suggest you shave your noggin' with what you're already familiar with.

Well I use the HB for the noggin and recently changed to Mach3 for my face. Tried it a couple of times for my head as well. I like both but practical guy that I am I am wondering about the sense of using two different blades due to economical reasoning.

I use both the HB and a Sensor. I use the HB to do the bulk of the job and the neaten up the odd spots I've missed or round my ears (which I find a bit tricky with the HB).  I personally find that the HB is great and gives me a wonderful smooth even result and was converted to the headblade after just a couple of uses.

You can alwasy flip the blade on your headblade and use it on your face, as well!

Headblade for the main shave... and whatever you love for the follow-up detailing (ears, etc.)  I prefer the atra blades ( 2 blades tend to not gunk up as quick as the triple blades).  Go for it... but go slow and easy on the pressure!

I use the headblade too. Takes a little getting use to though. Using Atra blades on it. Be vary careful when you first start out, and don't put any downward pressure on it. Just kind of let it do its own thing...

I vote for the M3. I've had MUCH more consistent results with it. The Headblade it way too hit or miss IMO.

Just to keep the lil' ol' noggin in sync, I make an attempt to shave it twice daily. Even though i may use variety in my routine, I usually first whack myself with the Headblade, followed by either the Gilliette Xtreme 3, or the Fusion.

May have to give the Mach a try, since I see soooooooo many others praise the results they get.
Mach comes in two types, doesn't it? Regular and Turbo.  For you guys who use the Mach - is there a preference?!  Also, I think Mach comes in a disposable too, doesn't it?! Do you guys consider disposable just as good the regular razor?!  Seems like it should be the same quality blade, no matter the choice...

Thanks for the feedback, in advance...

i use the mach 3 turbo and there really isnt much of a different between the regular and the turbo. the only difference is the turbo comes with an aloe strip on the razor as well as the "color fading" strip. the regular just comes with the color fading strip.

the blades are exactly the same except the turbo blades are like $5 more for some reason. its kinda rediculous.

Hey Cap'n

Regular Mach3 here.  Easy to use and gives a great shave, at least on my melon.

Gillette Extreme III has a good ad about a swimmer who shaves down before what appears to be a meet, and wins in a spectacular fashion--may have to give those disposables a try.   O0
