That was my first thought this past week when I got a personalized invitation to join AARP. And here I thought 40's were the new 30's (or something like that). I cannot figure out how they got my name or why they would solicit me. Anyone else had a similar expericence?.......If I didn't feel old before, I sure do now. :/O
-
Your birthdate must be recorded incorrectly somewhere. I think you can join AARP at 55, so they probably think you're ten years older than you are.
-
I thought you had to be around 53 to join - my cousin jumped in at the first possible moment to take advantage of their insurance. Your still too young ... but hey - you get all the good discounts with the AARP card. Take advantage of it!

It must be, or they are just doing a little early recruiting. It is kind of a blow to your ego just when you get used to looking younger without the grey hair. :'(
-
You're eligible to join at 50, according to their website. So maybe it is a little early recruiting.

Now that I think about it, maybe I should join just to get those "senior discounts". I'll be the first to admit that I'm cheap.....(or should I say frugal).

Start telling people that you're 50; everyone will think you look great for your age. ;)

Dont feel to bad SLYinKC i have been getting all sorts of "senior" mail everything from hear aids to special housing you name it i get and the real kicker is i have been getting all this since me early 30's.
-
I also received an AARP card in the mail a couple of weeks ago. Like you I am not even 40 yet.
-
For whatever reason, in the past several months I've been getting junk mail addressed to my father. We don't have the same last name and he's never lived at my house. A while back, I got something from a local nursing home. I saved it and brought it over to him and told him I'd been shopping around. >:D
He wasn't amused.
-
Yeah, as Razor said you can join at 50..started getting letters and mail from them when I was 48 or 49....somewhere around there.....when I turned 50 I joined and they also put my wife down as a member even though she was not yet 50.....I think it's a good organization and am somewhat involved with them....so if anyone is ready to turn 50 I would ask that you join and support the AARP...... O0

AARP was formerly named the American Association of Retired Persons.....it's now just called AARP because you don't have to be retired to become a member....it is a non profit organization for people aged 50 and over which provide a wide range of benefits for it's members, however it is also one of the most powerful lobbying groups in the U.S.....they are dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for all as we age......
-
I see, so do u have to pay to join, do u get old age pension anyway at 65.

Yes, there is a yearly fee or dues but it is nominal.....12.50 for a year or 21.00 for 2 years on up......The old age pension you refer to here is called Social Security that you pay into all your working life.....you can start drawing it as early as age 62 but you have to take a reduced amount.....others may choose to take it at 65 or older depending on their work status and financial stability etc.....

Hey, save some of that Social Security $$ for me :Xo!. Although I've been contributing to it (as has every working person in the US), I think the chances of it being solvent when I'm eligble to start drawing from it in 20 years are fairly low. If it were treated as an Enterprise Fund (and the citizens' contributions were left alone), it would stand a better chance of survival.

Hey Schro at least you only have about 20 some odd years to wait!

Schro....your right....if the politicans had kept their grubby hands off the fund we wouldn't have the problem we are having now..... O0

For the record, that is a paraphrase! I don't want to be accused of of stirring the political pot. :*))
There are a lot of issues with social security. My point is only one of them.
As an example of an enterprise fund (which is basically like a private business owned by the government), look to San Francisco. In SF, one of the nicest public golf courses in the nation (Harding Park) was basically run into the ground because the city's government kept stealing money from the account of the course to pay for their littany of civil service programs. Well, when they kept doing that, they left no money for course maintenance, and people stopped playing the course because it was in such awful condition. Round count is down, which means less revenue.
Well, the US PGA made an agreement with the City of San Francisco that they'd host several world events at Harding Park (including next year's President's Cup), in exchange for course renovations. As part of the agreement (which took two years longer than it should have because of San Franciso's city government's "way of doing things"), the bulk of the money stays in the course, and the First Tee youth golf program was started.
Now, Harding Park is thriving, round count is up, and all is good.

Nice to hear a success story for a change..... !`nt

You do, provided that the Social Security fund hasn't gone bankrupt by the time you're eligible.

I've been getting AARP stuff for 2 or 3 years now. I'm only 37. I just throw it out.

Yes, but you have to worry about your money being used to forward a political agenda that you might not necessarily agree with.

I thought about sending it in, but I don't think the will let you join until you're 50.

People with the AARP discount ... the same ones who go to Ryan's

Who the hell wants to eat at Shoney's? If you're lined up for the buffet at 4:00 in the afternoon, then maybe you should belong to AARP. :*))

I don't eat there either. It gives me the runs. Better head straight the house after that place.
My rule of thumb is if it doesn't have a bar, then I ain't goin'.

I think Shoney's and Ryan's are examples of your famous southern "cuisine", which we thankfully, don't have around here. Lord knows Red Lobster is bad enough. I've never even heard of Ryan's before.

It is amazing what the AARP set considers "fine dining" and "quality hotels"

Now that's the Gospel truth! Their standards are not exactly where I like to eat and stay.
Ryan's is a buffet like Golden Coral. Red Lobster used to be really good, but they've gone down hill fast the lst few years. I don't eat there anymore either.

Fine Southern Dining is The Lady and Son's, Any of the Peasant Restaurants, and Greens on Green Street (in Roswell). It is not Stuckey's or Cracker Barrell - whose founders got rich off yankees thinking they are eating Southern!

Cracker Barrel isn't that bad. I kind of like it, actually.
But yes, Lady and Sons in Savannah is good. The best southern food is at the locally owned places.
And my grandmother's dining room table.
