I'm not gonna grow my hair all the way back... just to a no guard length. I get too many stares from people and they don't make me feel good. I feel like an oddity when they look at me. Perhaps its because I am white, young, and bald... a pretty rare combination. If you are a young, sly guy, do you notice a lot of folks staring at your head? And if so, how does it make you feel?
-
Actually I have to say never bro..
and I'm white and most people think I'm in my very early 20's..
I think it's in your head...and a 0 buzz is bald to most anyways!
-
Dude ..... people are staring because :
1) You ROCK the SLY look! (thank you brother Andre for that terminology!)
2) They wish they would make the decision to do it
3) They want to rub it
4) THEY DON'T HAVE THE BALLS TO BE THEMSELVES....LIKE YOU DO!!!!
(sorry about the yelling....)
-
dog20: i thought U didn't care what people thought of U. now... all of a sudden, U want 2 "grow" your hair because people R staring at ya. :/O man... i don't get it. who gives a phuck what people think. It's in your head. If YOU don't like it, then change it.
-
Dog, have you forgotten about the 30 day rule? d3@
You're not allowed to grow your hair back until you've shaved your head for 30 consecutive days. After that, you'll be able to evaluate the situation with a little less emotion.
-
hey bro, i know where you are comming from, message me, i would love to talk more. i get so many stares, i end up covering my dome, and i end up going back and fourth between a buzz and bald. it can be rought, but all of us young sly guys gotta stick together :popo ;D O0

Trust me, Dog, I went through that shave it and regrow thing a few times. It wasn't until after I followed the 30 day rule that I truly began to feel comfortable with the shaved dome. You've shaved all your hair and made yourself completely bald. You owe it to yourself to actually live as a bald man for a while -- that's the only true way to know whether it is for you or not. Otherwise, you're doomed to always remain on the shave and regrow roller coaster.

You will be this time. :popo

There is no point in having a bald dome if you don't show it in public. I know it can be difficult in the beginning, but it's something you've got to get used to if you're going to be bald.
-
thanks for the update
where can i get a copy of this sly guys handbook!?
-
Don't worry...just like the ancient indian tribes...it's all spoken through elders here and years of our experience..
just listen up to what all us old baldies have to say..
we'll learn ya! ;)

It's normal to feel that way. It's something you get used to as time goes by. Start by going out in public without a hat, around people who don't know you. You might feel uncomfortable for a minute or two, but it quickly passes because who really cares what complete strangers who you will never see again think? Then you let your friends and family see it. It's a little awkward at first, but you just have to force yourself to do it. It's never as bad as you think it's going to be.
-
yeah, i know, but still i am nervous. i need more advice to help biuld my sly confidence, help!
-
Dog and teen,
I think you just need to remind yourselves of two things:
First, you're far more aware of the fact that your head is bald because you're still getting used to it. Consequently, you're thinking people are staring at you when they probably aren't. Which leads to the second point: people aren't nearly as concerned with your appearance as you are.
Sure, maybe being young and having a shaved head is unusual, but probably less so than those with 17 facial piercings and 10 inch multi-coloured mohawks.
What do you think the odds are of random people on the street going home to their families and saying "I saw this young guy at the store today with a bald head, and did he ever look freaky"? No offense, but don't flatter yourselves.
I will concede that kids in high school, however, seem to enjoy criticizing those who are different. Often though, it's in retaliation for them being criticized by others. And in the long run, their opinion just isn't worth worrying about.
-
thanks. im getting a little stronger, but i still need help, and thank you all you have helped me soooooooo much
-
I don't mean to be offensive but suck it up.
I mean the entire reason you guys are covering up/growing it back is to avoid criticism from other people. Would you rather be validated in other people's eyes or your own?
I get looks all the time and I relish them. I don't know about other SBGs but when I can tell that people go into the 'judgemental' mode I relish it. I tend to go super bad ass and stare them down.
Did you shave your head to remove yourself from the personal pain of thinning hair to to remove yourself from the judgement of those who would say you had thinning hair!
-
well, i have a full head of hair. i shaved it because i wanted to :popo ;D O0

All the more reason to stick to your guns.

I wish I had the courage to shave my head when I was in school. I never did. First I did it during the time in university and especially at my job my boss didn't like it at all. But they got used to it. I was always proud to shave my head.
Still I let it grow back 2 times but more than a year ago I deciced to stay bald ... no matter what. I still think it was the right decision. Everybody got used to it and not many people seem to care. Yes ... sometimes there are looks. But be proud! You got the courage that not every man has!
I think it looks great when also young guys shave their head and show that they love the sly look!
If I would see you on the street I also would kind of "stare" but only because I would think: Great! I wish I did it when I was that young!
Stay bald and show it! O0

Bro.
I lost my hair in a bet and it was the best lost bet I have made. I shave my head now for myself not for others. I dont shave everyday and sometimes I will go a week or so then mow it back down with trimmers then knock it back off with a razor. Just depends on how it feels. The thing with others... There is two types, one is they wish they had the balls and two the ones with conceit and are vain. Do what you want and be who you are. With hair or not you are you no matter what others see.
Peace bro.

its still really difficult to stick out that much

You don't stick out as much as you might think. The rest of the world isn't as focused on you and your hairstyle as you are. We all expect a huge reaction when we first shave our heads and usually it's not a big deal to the people around us at all.
-
well yeah i guess so,,,,,,, but still

well yeah i guess so,,,,,,, but still
No but's .... listen to your elders, young grasshopper! @c3
-
well, my elders are very helpful,,,,, but some of the grasshopers have haior and make fun of me and ask me if i have cancer :(
-
They make fun of you because they're insecure.
-
yes thats true.
its still very hurtful
but i will get over it
one way or another
i got a headblade!
-
Perhaps I'm still not comfortable in my skin.
-
well, it really think you should stay sly. im even younger, and i am sly, i got a couple of looks at walmart, but most people didnt notice or care. but its all up to you.
i actually saw at least 10 other chrome domes at walmart. it was really cool :popo ;D O0
-
If you guys feel THAT uncomfortable being sly then grow it back. And if either of you cant grow a full head of hair...than ask yourself if you felt uncomfortable losing your hair ? think about what made you shave to begin with. Heres the thing...some people will make fun of you losng your hair. Some people will make fun of you bald..
some people will make fun of your hairstyle even if you have a full head of hair...
So the bottom line is...does it really matter what other people will do/say ? This is why its important to do what YOU want to do. There are some people in this world who will always bust balls...if it isnt your hair it would be something else.
Stay true to yourself and wear what makes YOU happiest looking in the mirror everyday. For me ? SLY...no question...and there is not a person on this planet who could change my mind.
-
yes, thats true, and i have a full head of hair, it was totally my choise!
-
Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think the issue is with the slyness, it's the way you're looking at things. When I started high school I was maybe 20lbs overweight and totally unconfident. I always thought that if I had a six-pack I would walk way taller. So one day I just decided to go hardcore into nutrition and fitness. I lost probably 30lbs of fat and replaced it with muscle in less than a year (a lot of it was probably me getting taller, too) but I found I didn't really FEEL any more confident even though I looked totally different.
Confidence moves from the INSIDE OUT not from the OUTSIDE IN.
There are people I know who are hideous looking, horseshoe, morbidly obese and so on but they're totally 100% cool with themselves. I also know people who are gorgeous but completely uncomfortable in their own bodies.
The problem isn't that you're sly it's that you're interpreting things incorrectly. A good friend once had a conversation with me about this when I was going through the same thing. I always thought that people were judging me and out to get me. He said, "Can anyone look at you and expect to know what you're thinking about them?". Point taken.
Regrowing your hair would be treating the symptoms instead of the cause.
-
thanks, that really help me out:D
-
Its deeper than hair... I've never been confident. I need to make a lot of changes.
-
im still not confident really, i am a little, but its sometim=ng i need to work on
-
You are stressing far way too much bro. You just mentioned that you seen a few other slys at walmart adn thought it was cool. You mentioned that you got a few looks while at walmart. Were they just looks with comments or just looks? No possible way you can read the minds of others. They could just be looking at you and thinking...wow he has a great looking head.. but seriously bro....chill out. Do the 30 day rule and be done with it. If on the 30th day you still arent comfortable....grow it back and shave when you want to shave, I wouldnt make a big issue of it.
-
thanks timmmj. i am still a little uncomfortable with the idea of being bald at school. my oreientation is tuesday, idk if i will be completly bald or in need of a shave
-
Well teen....im sorry. I hope you didnt catch what I had posted initially. I did not catch taht you were 14. I apologize if I have ever made any mature adult comments towards you. Just do what you feel like you need to do. No one can really tell you what to do. It isnt our place to decide what is best for you. Although being that you are in a head shaving forum you are undoubtedly going to get a Yes towards shaving from all of us. Good luck with school and hope it isnt to big of an event for you. I think you look fine shaved...but ..its what you want to do
-
thank you soooo much for understanding. i may be bald during school, but i may have hair. i am still thinking about it. but all of you guys(and gals) here are making mr lean towards the SLY! side
-
Why are you shaving your head in the first place? Do you have some notion that you just have to be bald? If you do, that's freakin' cool, but if you feel uncomfortable grow your hair out. People are going to judge you no matter if you're short, tall, skinny, fat, bald, hairless, etc. etc. The sooner you stop caring what people think about you, the better off you'll be. Good luck man; if you want to be bald, rock it.
I hear you on being young. I'm 23, and I look about 17 with or without hair / facial hair. :D
-
Teen.. To me you seem to be a very cool and clever young guy. I guess you are the youngest guy here.
I know that it is very very rare to see young guys in your age with a shaved head. It's even more rare to find someone like yourself in your age or people but remeber that the *world* is bigger than your school or where you live and that there are people like yourself.
Don't let other people opinions matter about your look. Don't let anyone decide who you are and how you should look like. You do it yourself, you got a brain and you know whats wrong and right more than them.
Most people choose to *live with the flow*, especially teenagers because they are so damn damn insecure about themselves, they don't know it but if something were to happen them they would understand a little bit more. I don't think you are insecure because you are shaving your head, because you are doing it by choice. But you feel somewhat lost in this big world and that's why you feel so insecure or thinking so much about what other people might think of you.
Just try to remeber that there are people like yourself, this forum is just one of those places, I myself come from Sweden but live in Finland atm.
You can think wider and you will find out.
Thumps up for you, also remeber you are still very very young.

You are young, man. And the decision to have hair or not really isn't that big of a deal. Whichever decision you make, you will look back in time and laugh that it seemed like such a big decision. My encouragement to you is to do what makes you feel happy. If you are stressed out about this or that, it's no good.
-
yeah, thats true. i cant decide
i enjoy being bald
but i enjoy having hair
oh well
time will tell!
well, i am gonna stay bald for 30 days, then i will make my dession

Completely agree. You're going to realize later what an insignificant decision this is. Just do what makes you happy.
