Okay, first time poster and sure as hell am nervous about the whole going bald thing.
I was a bit of a rocker in my teens (although I'm only 21 now so it wasn't that long ago!) and had the long hair thing going, then at 17 I noticed it was starting to thin and the temple areas were going bald. Got it cut short when I was 20 as it was becoming too noticeable, I try not to think of myself as a vain man but I love my hair.
Now at 21 I look like one of the "before" pics on those weird hair loss adverts and I'm thinking it's finally time to take the plunge. Feeling pretty down about it all, I'm man enough to admit I've even shed a tear over it, but I think it's time it has to go.
The thing is, how do I go about it? It's my first time so I was thinking about just going to the barber's to get it done then shave the stubble as it grows.

If you plan on keeping it short then you could have a barber shave it all off and then you can use a razor to keep it that way. Or if for some reason you grow it back, only to decide to go bald again... then you should get a pair of hair clippers. Use the clippers (without a guard) and then follow that up with the razor. It is best to leave your hair wet so your hair will soften up. Then use shave cream or aloe vera or shave gel and leave that on your head for a few minutes. Then slowly shave your hair off and try not to put to much pressure on your head. It will be a little hard the first time, but the more you practice, the easier and less often you will cut yourself. After the hair is gone, follow up with aftershave or aloe vera.
I shaved my head when I was 20, and now I'm 22. Its not a big deal bro, don't worry so much about it, its just hair.

First off WELCOME to the Sly Bald Guys family sibbs,
Seccond if you want to go Sly, you could get the barber to clipper shave it with No guard, then either use your favorite blade and finnish the job yourself. I recomend getting some quality shave gel like Bald Guyz Ultimate Shave Gel http://www.baldguyz.com/ (http://www.baldguyz.com/), and take your time doing it. Also you will want to protect your newly Sly dome with some Sun Block also available from Bald Guyz.
However if you don't want to do it all at once you could just go with the clipper shave to see how you'll feel, but most people once they go Sly wonder why they waited so long.
Oh and on a side note: our very own Robmister was a real rocker with the long hair like the old 80's hair bands but he looks great Sly I couldnt imagin him with hair!

Welcome sibbs!!!
I did the same thing over 2 months ago. Went to the barber and buzzed it as close as possible. Then I went home and finished off the next morning with my electric shaver.
Read the outstanding posts here about shaving routines and don't be afraid to experiment and ask questions. There are a lot of experienced Sly Guys and Gals that will be glad to field any questions you have! Keep that Sly dome protected with a good sun screen!!! 8)

sibbs: one more thing... DO NOT USE A CHEAP RAZOR!!! make certain that U use a quality razor like the fusion, mach3, or headblade. your dome will love ya 4 it. O0

I just started shaving recently myself sibbs.
I definitely prefer sly to balding, hopefully you will too.
In any case, don't shed any tears. It's not all that big of a deal. If every balding guys shed tears, we'd all drown. Let a barber buzz you, or just snag a set of clippers off Amazon like these Wahl ones...

That's what I did and it was a breeze getting rid of what I had. After that it's just a matter of finding the right routine within your price range.

Welcome to the Foprum SIBBS! Dude... there's nothing cooler than a rocker with a shaved head...........
-
Welcome Sibbs,
first go to your barbershop and get your hair completely buzzed down. Then you can still decide what to do. If you still want a smooth shaved head then take a mach 3 or fusion razor. You'll like it!
Go ahead!
best regards

Welcome Sibbs. I'm 23, and I started gradually losing hair at around age 16. A few months ago, I took the dive and it has been very liberating. Throughout high school and college, I tried to hide the fact that I was balding, by wearing a hat or not going to events because I feared reactions of other people. How pitiful is that? I missed out on realtionships and oppurtunities only because I didn't want to face the reality of who i actually was.
When I take a second and think about my life, the last thing I want on my headstone when i die is "Worried about hairloss". So I try to continue to have that outlook and to make decisions (hair/non-hair related) based on that idea.
Now is the time Sibbs! You've taken a huge step by coming to this site, and expressing your feelings - the easy part is to take a razor to your head.
Take care

Sounds like you have a good plan. As mentioned, you could also grab a pair of clippers and buzz it down yourself if you wanted to. I already had a pair of clippers since I was cutting my own hair.
Anyway, welcome to the site. Don't sweat the hair too much man. What's more important than the hair is the way it's worn. Think about the Mustache. It can be a Moles-tache or it could be a Porn-stache, or a Cop-stache.

Sibbs, first of all Welcome to SBG.
Secondly, Read all the posts that they have on this forum about Head shaving.
Third, Just do it, and if you don't like it, it will grow out.
I will be the first to tell you that Shaving the Dome has it bad moments, i.e. nicks, bumps, ingrown hairs, etc.
but hey you might love the sly look just like 99.99% of the people on this forum do, but you won't know for sure till you do it.
We are here if you need support, hey there are even a couple of Athletic Supporters on this forum

Hey Sibbs, welcome to the family :)
-
A late welcome to you sibbs, glad you joined up.
As the other guys have said, maybe have it buzzed down so you can get used to it.
After that you can decide if you want to go all the way. Most guys here have found they just couldn't wait to shave it all off, once it was that close.
Good luck and keep us posted. O0

Sibbs, Welcome to SBG!!! I'm a newbie here too, but not a newbie to being sly.
I can understand your feelings about going bald at such a young age, but my philosophy is if it's inevitable, then embrace it. My advice would be to gradually work your way to a shaved head. Start with a 1/2" buzz and every two weeks go 1/8" lower until you use no guard. That way you, and everyone around you will get use to "the new you". I think that once you go sly, you'll realize that it's the best thing you'll ever do.
