Title: Clipper Recommendations?
Post by: Joe442 on August 08, 2008, 11:49:23 AM
I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with either the wahl peanut or the andis outliner in shaving their head.  I purchased the wahl balbing clippers and while they will definitely get the job done, they are kind of bulky to manuever when doing it yourself.  It seems when I visit the barber, she is basically just shaving it down with a trimmer that appears to be the andis model but not sure....haven't asked because I don't want to give away that I'm seeking to do it myself, but I do like the result of being basically bald but with a shadow effect.  Has anyone used either of these two and are their any recommendations?   Thanks!

Joe:

I haven't used either of the 2 clippers you mention....if you have someone home who could do it for you I would recommed you get yourself a good pair of Oster clippers.....that is what I purchased when I use to keep my head buzzed like you , however, I think they might be too bulky for someone to use on themselves.....I think I purchased mine from Amazon.Com...they do a terrific job and may be a bit pricey....wish I had some more info for you but that's all I got.....Good Luck!

i have the andis balding clippers (the box had a black dude on it). They do a great job.  I kinda like the shadow look too but I LOVE the feel of being slick.

Hey Joe,

Before I started shaving my head I was buzzing with Panasonic ER147.  They are small lightweight clippers made for professionals.  There are some for sale on eBay (new) as Item 200244702526.  ~$100.

Can't comment on the others mentioned but I like the Oster 76 w/ #00000 blades. About $120 on ebay.

I use an Andis model to trim my beard. It seems it would take a while to do my head when compared to shaving it down, though. It's a fast process to shave, but not so much with clippers, I have found. Don't get a T-Edge model to do your head is my only recommendation. It's more for outlining and the like.

Joe:
She might be using an Andis Outliner Trimmer/Edger. I have one and it's great. About $55 at a barber or brauty supply store or online. They clip it darn near a shaved level to the skin. Smaller than a big clipper, but powerful and barber quality. The Oster 76 with the #00000 blade takes it to the wood, too, but is large and costs $120 like UGABulldog mentioned.
Either way, you'll quickly save the costs of going to the barber every 2-3 days to keep it shaved with a bit o' shadow. Good luck! Post up a review once you decide.

I have an Oster T-Finisher.
It corded to it's more powerful then battery trimmer and the T head makes it great for trimming Mustaches and Goatees. They're are comb attachment but you have to puchase them separately, but their cheap.

I used a Wahl (I don't know the model number) before I started using the Mach 3.  It worked fairly well.
Don't pay for a barber to buzz your hair.  Doing it yourself is cheaper, more convenient and fun.

Just get any decent pair and you should be good to go.  (maybe try a Mach 3 too, the advantage is that you can let it go 3 or 4 days with NO maintenance.)

I use wahl clippers at the moment on the grade 2 setting, 1 from tonight actually, they are bulky but they do the job.

I am going to start using the razor from next year as I have been gradually going down grades to get use to it, thats what I am worrying about, dont want to end up with loads of cuts!

You won't if you just take your time, get your scalp sufficiently wet and use a good quality razor and shaving gel.  It's really not difficult. I didn't get any cuts or nicks my first time.

I have the Wahl Peanut, and it's great - cheap, and easy to maneuver.  When used with no guard, it goes fairly low, but probably not as low as the balding clippers or the Andis one you mentioned.

I had a few brands Wahl, Andis and a couple of others that I got from Wallyworld. Then I bought a headfade sport from headblade(it's made by Wahl). I got the closest and easiest buzz from this one. I still have it but only use it for my gotee because I swithched to a razor. I would highly reccomend it. Being cordless and small it is very easy to use.

I have Wahl Balding Clippers, I'd have to agree they are a bit bulky but they do get the job done.  :)

I suspect this is a  relabeled Wahl Lithium Ion All-in-One clipper.  The main clipper looks just like the HB.  Given that HB says it's made by Wahl, this must be very very similar at any rate.   The Wahl unit is cheaper, but the HB carry case is good to have. (If they were close in price, I'd go with HB just to support them.)

I also like the Wahl Balding Clippers.  Set at the zero level, with no guard, they really buzz it down nice.  They are a bit bulky/heavy, but I actually like the additional control that gave me.  Unfortunately, when I moved to Poland, the change in voltage (110 --> 220) didn't agree with them.

Now I use the Remington HC600 cordless (without the guard).  Not as good, but OK.  Cordless is nice because I can stand in the shower and not worry about getting clippings everywhere.  On the flip side, cordless usually means less power after a use or two.  Less power equals more going over the same spots time and again and more irritation.

For fear of contradicting myself, I now realize I was wrong.  In another post I was saying how my clipper wasn't getting the job done, but I realized I was using the shortest guard.  If you want a shadow look (not shiney) cut, I really like the Remington Shortcut.  However, if you want a crew cut with the guard, I don't recommend them.  Without the guard they work great, but for some reason with the guard, I find I can't get an even cut.

I use the remington shortcut too, or I did until I started shaving.  Love it.  It worked really well for me using the shorter guard (the balding guard).  I started at the highest setting and moved my way down, now I'm shaving ... go figure!  I find the shortcut really easy to use, it's great without the guard, and it even does a nice job on my goatee.

I haven't used them yet but based on several recommendations here I recently purchased the Wahl Balding Clippers. I got mine at Sally Beauty Supply for $47. They come with a 60 day return policy. The manager told me that if I don't like them I can return them within 60 days (with the receipt).

I'm going to try them out this weekend.

Best of all....they are Made in USA.

Tried out the Wahl Balding Clippers today. Used the 3/16 guard to get the feel of them. They worked well. No burns, nicks, cuts, etc. I'm very happy with my purchase.

And....best of all, they're made in the U.S.A.

Now, go for the gold, the blade--you'll never believe how nice & smooth it can be. O:O

My Remington shortcut died and I was about to purchase the Headblade or the Whal Balding Clipper but found the Conair Cleanhead instead.  It works great and now I am a real life sly guy, not just a crew cut wanna be.  It shaves me as close as a blade without the cuts and irritation.

Here is the link if you are interested.  Another sly guy here gave an excellent review and it was very accurate.

Just found a sale on the Conair Cleanhead at CVS...

I used the Wahl Balding Clipper ($47 at Sally Beauty Supply) last night, for the first time. It was awkward to do by myself and took twice as long as shaving, but I am happy with the cut. Leaves a nice shadow on the dome. I'm finding that I like that little shadow more than "sly."
