I have always been a fan of the Olympics. For some reason, I just can't get excited about it this time.
Maybe it's China. Maybe there are not really any stand out athletes this time. I don't know.
Any other fans of the Olympics?

I thought about starting this topic last night but now you've beat me to it! :D
I find athletics and the like pretty boring now.. I used to watch it when I was a kid. I'm the same as you
when it comes to lack of excitement.. and like you I think it's a culmination of not having
any particularly outstanding athletes and the fact that it's in China.
Seems to me that the media over here has paid more coverage to all the troubles that the
Olympics have been undergoing.
saying that.. I may watch the diving events to root for our young little lad Tom Daley. C'mon Tom!!

I feel the same way. Just not really into it this year. Thought it was just me, but I guess not.

I personally love the Olympics, but maybe that is a symptom of the job I do. I think this year could be great for GB. We are never going to excel in the 100m, but we have a real chance of quite a few medals.
Phillip Idowu is a good bet for gold in the triple jump
Christina Ohurugu must be a reasonable shout for the 400m
Kelly Sotherton for the heptathalon now that Katerina Kluft is out
Then there is the rowing which is always exciting, Gail Ems and the other one have a good chance in the badminton. Could Paula overturn the odds in the marathon. We are better tnan even at swimming and are world beaters at the moment in track cycling. These games will lay the foundations of 2012 which could also be great.
Personally I am excited!

That makes 3 of us.....(4 of us....sorry M.Babe)
The last Olympics that REALLY stand out, where I didn't miss an event were:
1972 (or thereabout) when Mark Spitz won all the swimming golds
1976 (or thereabout) when I had a MAJOR CRUSH on Dorothy Hammel (I was like 14 yrs old).
-
Yes, I'm sport fan myself but this time I lack interest in the Olympics, as you say maybe it is because media focus on other stuff than the sports.
Didn't even noticed that it had started till some days ago.
-
The best was the 1980 USA Hockey Team taking the Gold in Lake Placid NY.....never seen anything like it since!

I'm right there with you. I actually had this discussion with my g/f last night. Great minds and all...

I wasn't in it until this week. Now I'm jazzed for it! I just cleared out my TiVo so that it can record all of the Olympic programming.
I have a feeling there is going to be something crazy that happens this year and I don't want to miss it.

Is anyone watching the opening ceremonies? I'm really enjoying it.

I saw it in reply now and have to say it was an amazing opening! Now I'm gonna follow the Olympics more close!
-
Yeah, has to be the best Opening Ceremonies ever devised. Awesome
-
It was phenomenal! Simply awesome! O0
-
I just got finished watching the Opening Ceremony. midnight on the east coast of the US
No words for it. You just have to see it! Stunning, absolutely stunning.
-
You got it bro. That was spectacular...it left me breathless. What a phenomenal opening. Well worth staying up for.

I realize that the Olympics is about individual athletes from different countries competing against each other and not country against country. I have been a huge fan of the olympics in years past, but this year with it being held in China I feel that this Olympics has been turned into one big commercial for China to try to improve the way the world sees them.....I will watch the events, and I hope that my perspective changes as the athletes start to compete.
-
Viewership for the Olympics has been declining for years. For me, it is the political correctness and America bashing by the major networks. Some of the "events" they allow in Olympic competiton I dont understand "why"(like pushing weights on ice and sweeping the ice in froront of the weight with a broom'...). To me, Olympic competiton should have some level of physical achievement and skill.
My favorite Olympic moments are Franz Klammers downhill run in 1976 and the US hocky win in 1980.

There's been complaints about the political overtones of the Olympics for many years:
1972 in Munich with the murdered Israeli team members
1976 boycott by 28 African nations over a New Zealand rugby tour of South Africa - Princess Ann was the only female competitor not sex tested
1980 in Moscow when the USA and 61 other nations refused to field a team
1984 in LA when the USSR and 13 other nations refused to field a team (GB 3rd in field hockey)
1988 in Seuol (North Korea and a few others Boycotted) (GB 1st in Hockey - captained by Rick Dodds who went to the same school as me)
There's also been a major outcry about the commercialisation of the games. Now as professional athletes are allowed to compete this is inevtiable.
There will also be complaints about drug taking and I'm sure a few medal winners "shamed". Although in a professional sport it is hard to resist doing everything to be the best and the highest paid.
I thought the opening ceremony in China was amazing (those firework footprints!).
2000 stands out as a highlight for me. My younger son had just been born and appeared to be nocturnal. I watched a lot of the Sydney coverage live in the middle of the night.
-
I did stay up to watch the opening ceremony. And I have to say it was the best I've seen. I will watch several of the events, though not as many as I have it the past.
Dave, great pic in your Avvy. O0
Really? Pricess Ann? Huh? :*))

I'm with Tyler... I have TiVo'd everything from the beginning. Yeah, all the political diatribe sucks, but I will not let it spoil MY Olympics!! I think some amazing records will be broken and set.
I'm also excited becuase a good friends G/F is swimming for the womens waterpolo team. They beat China yesterday, but barely. Not good when you only win by one point and it is China's debut with waterpolo. They gave the USA a run for their money. I'm still rooting for her and the team. Go Moriah!!!!

How about that Michael Phelps!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! O0
And the US women's gymnastics team..............GOLD and Silver for All Around.
