I had planned to shave my head today, I asked my mum for some help ie to buzz it first and she said
'god no! you will look like some kind of skinhead. Dont be so silly, It wont look good at all'
So my confidence totally knocked. I dont know if I should do it now. I deffinetly dont want too look like a skinhead.

She sounds like my grandma... when I shaved my head, my grandma asked me if I was hanging around skinheads. If you hair is bothering you then shave it off. I feel better not having to worry about my bald spot. I swear, I don't know what the hell is wrong with some people.

It would be hard to shave your head and not look like a skinhead.
Skinheads by nature, shave their heads.
Here's the thing, people know a skinhead by the way they dress (Combat boots, etc...) and the way they act.
Just don't dress or act like a skinhead.

Don't worry about it! Some people say those things because they still see it as socially unacceptable whereas in todays day and age it's just a normal style of 'haircut' people have. You had given it thought, so just go for it and do the '30 day trial' and remember what everyone here has said to people on the fence, "It's just hair, it can grow back!"

I'm sure none of the below has gone unsaid, but I thought I'd gather it here in one place since a lot of guys cite the subject of this thread as a reason not to go sly.
While I was just shaving my head in the shower, I was thinking about how I used to tell myself the same thing. But an idea hit me - most guys think that they can't pull it off because of the SLY mystique, as I call it. A sly guy is not only a bald guy, but a bald guy with confidence about being bald. No one really notices anyone without confidence, but a confident person attracts attention. And a SLY guy attracts even more. Hence, the sly mystique. Sly guys would look good with or without a bald head! The liberating act of going bald brings about the confidence that truly makes a man sly.
So, if you're sitting on the fence, jump to our side.
Besides, have you ever heard a woman say any of the following?
- "I sure love a man with a comb-over"
- "There's nothing sexier than a man with a receding hairline"
- "I love it when a man looks like a slob because he doesn't have time to style his hair"
I doubt you have! Plenty of women dig a smooth head. And those that don't are only waiting to meet a man with one. Ask any woman what she finds sexy in a man, and you'll hear "confidence" a hell of a lot more often than "the hair that the guy in the Rogaine commercial has." Or "a nice toupee" or even just a plain ol' "nice hair."
The day I decided that I would shave my head was the day I saw one of my superiors at a large conference. In my field, you have to be bold and confident. But he spoke meekly, didn't assert himself, and as he stood under a light in the room, his comb-over was fully on display for 200 people to see - to be unable to ignore. I don't mean to shame him. But it was obvious that he wasn't confident in himself and the comb-over was the neon lighting framing it all. Enough neon to make Vegas blush. He's always conveyed himself as a man angry with himself and his personal life, come to think of it. He's a man that could use a HeadBlade, even if he had the hair.
So, to summarize - you WILL look good with a shaved head, because you will be more confident in yourself! You will carry yourself like a man that has nothing to hide, and just to prove it, is willing to put it on display. So go shave it.

You don't give a location, but your use of the term "Mum" would indicate to me that you are in the UK.
It is unfortunate that some people a few decades ago used a shaved head as a political statement to emphasize their rather unpopular political views. It was more prevalent in Europe than it was over here in "the States".
People your mom's age probably still have a mental impression and connect a shaved head with the violent culture that was was prevalent in the "skinhead" movement. They were basically a hate group, and that left a bad feeling with a lot of people back in those days.
I don't really have a solution for you, if your mom feels that strongly. Maybe you can convince her that times have changed, and a shaved head isn't a political statement like it used to be. It is just another "hairstyle".
If you can't get her to see it that way, you might have to wait a while, and just go with a short buzz for now.

I live in Scotland. I said well how about just a buzz but that didnt go down well ether.

Andy, first thing you need to do is not ask for permission. This is something you are doing for yourself. You said you needed help wiht buzzing it down? You can not do it wrong by doing it yourself. If you are using a guard just go all over your head with it. If it takes you a while...so be it. Naturally at first you are going to have a lot of hair to get rid of....just like high weeds...you take a weed wacker to it and butcher it up ...then you fine tune it with a lawnmower. So what if you mess it up....the solution to that would to shave it all off...to the scalp!
Hang in there bro, you will come to a time when you want to do it. Just please dont put too much thought into what other people are thinking. This is all for you..not anyone else

You're forgetting that most mother's gave birth to bald sons.
I'm just as bald today as I was the day that I was born.
Confidence comes from within, so don't let anyone take it away from you.

I was a lucky exception in that mine complimented how it made me look younger.

If your hair is controlling you in a bad way then the best solution would be to just shave/buzz it. Then you don't have to think about your hair. Instead you can say to yourself this is me, this is who I'm.
Don't let anyone else decide who you are, you know it yourself.
