Actually I live about 300 mi NW of there, but will be moving down there In a few weeks to go to school at MSU.
I have never been taught to fear bears, if a bear attacks you it is usually because it is afraid of you. Here we are taught to fear mountain lions, if one attacks you, it is hungry.

I was hiking near Leavenworth, WA last weekend, and heard a low growl within 20 feet of me and my g/f.
Since our only way down was in the direction of the growl I gave her a little pep talk. "If it's a bear, I know you're going to want to run. Don't run"
She was scared and asked me if I was scared. I said no, but really I was already pissing my pants. We got to the bottom of the mountain without seeing anything.

I've run into bears in Montana. The key is to not get between you and the cubs. Usually they are more afraid of you and will not bug you unless provoked.
