Title: No turning back now
Post by: Tanizaki on July 11, 2008, 09:45:26 PM
I'm 32 and have been dealing with MPB since I was 20 or so, but more severely in the past five years.

After work yesterday I was talking with a few coworkers and we were giving each other shi7 about our hair (or lack thereof). I said that one day I would buzz it all off, which I had thought about on and off for some time. Then it occurred to me, when will it be "one day"?

Last night I mentioned the idea to my wife (which I think was one factor that held me back before), and she said, "why not give it a try?" So, on the way home from work I bought myself some Wahls. I was coming home a bit early to watch this kids while she had "girls night", and I told her that I would be clipping tonight. Soon after she left, I put on a #2 guard and ran it up the side of my head.

"It's ok - you can get it fixed at the barber tomorrow!" I thought. No, F that. I kept running the clippers along the horseshoe, and then finally across the pate.

Ok, nice and horseshoe. Let's buzz more. Repeat the drill with the #1, then the #0, then no guard.

(My 3 1/2 year old son was watching the entire time. First he said, "that's scary" but soon it was "I'm not scared. Don't cut me." Later he said it was "pretty" and he kept running his hands over it saying "wow" or "it hurts".)

Now I am on a no-guard cut of 1.5 mm. I called the wife and told her that our baby was asleep, our boy was playing with me, and I was a maru-bouzu (my wife's Japanese, which we speak at home. Maru-bouzu is a term for a very short buzz all around the head like a Buddhist monk has.)

With the no-guard cut, the horseshoe is less pronounced but still there. I will probably attack it with my 1951 Gilette Super Speed tomorrow (or have my barber do it - they do shaves), but I wanted to let the wife see the maru-bouzu beforehead.

No "after" pics right now, but here is me as of May 2008.  Not that bad (I'd like to think), but I was well on my way.

Will post after pics this weekend.

The wife came home just now as I was about to go to bed. She had a pretty good reaction and smile. After she showers up and winds down a bit she said she'll feel it.  O0

I'll probably go to my barber tomorrow morning and have them shave it down. I used to go there for a shave and haircut every other Saturday. Now I'll be going in for some weird hybrid thereof.

I'll post a shaved pic over the weekend after my visit to the barber.

EDIT: Beautiful young Japanese wife can't stop touching it and agreed that smooth is the way to go. She really liked it, saying I look younger and I have a good shape head for it. Also, it helped that I lost the weight. I used to be over 250 lbs, but over the last year got down to 170 (now I keep it in the 170s), and having the visible cheekbones and such helps pull it off better, I think.

I can tell already this is going to be good.  I bet you look 10 years younger.

I also admire your attitude.  No fence sitting for you.  Have a good weekend and welcome to the gang!

Just got back from the barber about 30 minutes ago. Still have a bit of shadow but here is how I look now. The wife likes it over the no-guard buzz. Even though my 3 1/2 year old son watched me buzz it all last night, when I came back he asked, "Where's your kaminoke? (hair)"

My parents just gave a call and asked if Tanizaki Jr. wants to come over and swim. I am curious to see my parents' reaction. Dad has been a horseshoe for decades with a fairly thick fringe, although Mom keeps telling him to clip it close Ed Harris-style.

My head still feels a bit weird. It feels cooler than normal, with a itch that I attribute to this morning's shave. I'll be slathering on the sun block so I don't go into work with a scarlet scalp on Monday.  8)

Seriously though, the sly look suits you well.  Gotta hand it to you for making up your mind and doing the deed.

Tanizaki, do you plan on getting a head blade or anything, or are you just going to go to the barber for your shave? Also, you should get some head lube glossy, it would fit your look.

I'm still thinking about how things will go. It's hard to think right now just coming back from my folks.

My mom and younger sister were pretty neutral about it. Dad gave the silent treatment, and I am actually pretty upset about it.

"He doesn't like change," Mom and sister reminded. But yeah, I came home pretty upset, but the wife was supportive. Mom and sister were, too.

Welcome!  Sly is definitely better for you.  Don't allow the opinions of others, no matter how close they are, affect what you do.  You like it, and your wife is supportive and likes it as well.  That's the important thing!  Others will learn to accept it.

Tan you looks great. Although I may be a bit biased  8)
You look younger and more confident. I am recently sly myself...(shaved down last week).
To be honest--Ive gotten some good reactions and some lukewarm no negatives so far...(I'm a pretty big guy so that may influence some people a bit ;))
Still, the people who are the most important to me have given me VERY good reactions and thats whats important to me.  Some people will never get their head around the fact that its OK to be bald....you dont have to be
sick with cancer, a hells angel, an outlaw or a mental patient. Which to be honest is how a lot of people viewed baldness back in the day. Your dad may just be in that old skool way of thinking you know ?
Hold that bald head up high and proud !

Thanks. I am hoping (and expecting) that he will turn around shortly. I mean, this is 100% reversible. It is not some sort of body mutilation, and it didn't cost me a dime. I think it was just a shock.

Hopefully so. Just the same...if he doesnt come around...its your head and you can do with it what you want to..
After all I am sure he wouldnt like it if you gave him a strong opinion on his fuzzy horseshoe.
Its his perogative to wear that...as it is yours to choose NOT to wear it.

He'll come around.  He just needs a little time to get used to it.  Usually it's the mothers that have a problem with it.

Mom came by later with some things for my son and said how silly she thought Dad was being, which helped.

Of course, the person who really needs to get used to it is me. I am taking a "wait and see" approach to this hair choice. Luckily, it's entirely reversible if I decide it's not for me, but for now I am keeping an open mind.

Tanizaki, just wanted to tell you that the sly look definitely suits you bro.  You look much younger and it seems like you're loving it as well.  Your dad will come around.
Yeah, it turned out it was a misunderstanding on my part. As soon as he heard from Mom about it, he came over and cleared it up. It was all in my head.  O0

As for my head, Mrs. Tani had said while she thought shaved suited me, she missed my hair, so I started growing it back. Last night, I told her that I felt more confident with the dome, but would keep growing it back to the old way if she really preferred it. She said my feelings were more important, so I clipped it back down to a no-guard. Once I get some tan on the stubbled scalp, I will probably shave it down again.

I'm an alpha male, but I involved my wife because I think it is wrong to willingly become unattractive to your spouse. That's why I cut the fat from over 250 lbs to 170 lbs. Sometimes Mrs. Tani will say, "You look great now, but sometimes I miss my teddy bear." She changes her mind pretty quickly as soon as I say, "In that case, I'll go out and get some double-doubles from Checkers" >:D. Between the weight and the new hair (or lack thereof), it's been a big change for her in the past 12 months, but one she and I both love.

To get an idea, here's me at my fattest (just over 250 lbs):
(https://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg206.imageshack.us%2Fimg206%2F2206%2Ffattyge9.jpg&hash=c7d597474b367d2f15e4a9ccf2e6e6b716630e1f)

And this morning (169 lbs):

Good job on the weight loss; that's quite an accomplishment!   O0

Now, you just have to keep that dome smooth.  You look too good bald to even consider having hair.  No offense, but in the before photo, the thinning is noticeable.  It didn't look really bad, but that's not something that's going to improve over time.  Thinning hair doesn't look good on anybody.

Awesome accomplishment losing all that weight.
But the next time you post a pic of your buzzed noggin' you should be smiling.
