Title: beards
Post by: no1birdman on July 11, 2008, 12:29:53 AM
As a lot of sly guys are now sporting a beard, I ask are beards evil looking. Take the classic image of the devil; Horns sticking out his head, a menacing smile and a wispy goatee beard are almost standard issue. Several other evil people had beards. The Master (from the TV show Dr Who) wore a goatee and it's a well known fact that Rolf Harris has a goatee beard. And I'm sure we all know that he's the embodiment of evil.

Other goatfaced people include such evil fuckers as Anton La Vey, Rasputin, The Bee Gee's, Osama Bin Laden, Saddam Hussein, Charles Manson, Count Dooku and Jeremy Beadle. Going by that you could, conceivably, come to the conclusion that a beard not only makes you evil but may also have a strange side-effects.

Looking at the other side of the coin throws up famous beard wearers who were inspirational. John Lennon wore a beard. As did Aristotle, Ernest Hemingway, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Nikolai Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov, Socrates, Frank Zappa, Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill, Charles Darwin, Brian Blessed, Charles Dickens, Diogenes of Sinope, Dave Gorman, Matt Groening, Karl Marx, Sean Connery and Santa Claus.

The realization that there are just as many non-evil beard wearers as there are evil beard wearers may cause you to think that one cancels out the other. And you'd be right. To a certain extent.

There may be a kind of natural balance in the ratio of evil-with-beard/non-evil-with-beard that has developed over time. I don't know. I can only make wild stabs in the dark .

Hmmm...  so then according to that, I'm the embodiment of evil, as I have always had either a beard or goatee since I was 15.  Ohhhhhhhhh, add to THAT the fact that it's red and red is the colour of the Devil!

Damn, and we can't forget that I'm a Government Agent, and we're all just evil, uncaring, thoughtless, selfish, ignorant, soulless and heartless people....

I guess you should all watch out for ME!!!

Bald headed villains have been a staple of bad cinema for a really long, time, too.
In regards to beards, there are certain types of beards that classically look evil. They are usually VERY well maintained, and very defined, and dark. My mother has said I looked like the devil a few times (not now, of course)...I got a chuckle out of it.

I have always been told I look much younger than I really am. I think with a beard I have to look closer to my actual age of 32.

I was once told I looked "demonic"; but that was in a room with "black lights" ; it was also before I was sly . ...

I sport a Goatee occasionally, I refer to it as my "Getting a little Western".  Prefer to have a crop of whiskers when I'm hunting, especially in colder months.  No I don't feel it keeps my face any warmer, just the sense of being a little, or a lot, less maintained seems to suit my persona when I'm carrying a loaded weapon or holding a fishing pole in my hand.  I think Jeremiah Johnson was a relative of mine in a former life as a Mountain Man!

I've always had some facial hair since I was about 14. In the Winter it's a full beard and in the Summer it's a Fu 'stache.

The whole association with facial hair and evil came  about partly from a change in social norms when men started shaving off their beards instead of letting them grow, and partly from the rejection of anything related to sexuality in the modern Christian reformation.

I believe it was Socrates who said "There are two types of people who go around without beards, women and children, and I am neither".

Hows about an update on your beard.  Any substantial growth to report.  Let's see a pic.

I guess I will chime in here...

I am the founder and president of the Midwest Beard and Moustache Club - http://www.midwestbeard.com (http://www.midwestbeard.com) - an official local chapter of Beard Team USA.

Beards are neither evil nor good - although their power can be harnessed for such purposes.  Trucker got it right.  And beard acceptance is cyclical and cultural.  Towards the mid part of the 19th century (late 1830's) through the early part of the 20th century, rarely was man seen in the USA without a beard (full, goatee or other category).  Beards fell out of favor for two reasons in the early 20th century - during WWI soldiers were told they needed to shave to don gas masks and make a good seal - plus it gave the soldiers a more uniform look and the American military does not like non-conformity.  It was during this time that American cinema started portraying the American soldier as a great hero on the screen - and Holywood actors embraced this by going clean shaven as well.  Thus began the beginning of the end of the beard in the last century.

Fast forward to the hippie movement - Even George Carlin, who was clean shaven when he was up and coming - began to don a beard during this time - his contemporaries told him his career would be over - his Las Vegas shows were cancelled - but he refused to shave - and I don't think he did too bad at all.

Fast forward to the 80's and 90's - beards were almost non-existant here.  Every man wanted a close shave - the razor industry boomed.  If you had facial hair you were most likely looked upon as a "dirty hippie wannabe" or an out of work starving artist.  This continues even today - but the tides have changed a little.  I think the emasculation of men - the Metrosexual look - is falling by the wayside just a little - you see more men today with beards than you have since the 60's.

Yes, I have been harangued and harrassed about my beard - my family even tried to have an intervention for me - for real.  Some comments I have received:

1.  "You look like you just crawled out of a spider hole, Saddam"
2.  "When are you going to shave that disgusting thing off your face?"  This was from a female co-worker that I barely knew - my reply was unkind...it was a Monday morning.  I replied, "When are you going to go on a diet and lose that gut"  Oddly enough she never spoke to me again - and I did feel bad about saying that.
3.  "That makes your face look fat"
4.  "Do birds nest in that thing?"
5.  "Hey Charlie Manson"
6.  "I dig that Rasputin look"
7.  "That looks like pubic hair on your face" - that was from my wife
8.  "I won't kiss you until you shave it off" - also from the wife
9.  "I am going to cut it off while you sleep" - you guessed it..the wife

I have also received several positive comments - and unsought but welcomed attention from quite a few ladies (but many of my friends are in the ink slinging business (tattoo artists) and since I spend a lot of time in the chair and at the shop - I tend to meet more open minded people.  I've even been hit on by guys - which is flattering - but not my thing.

Just check out my website - go to the Links section and poke around on several of the beard related websites/organizations.  There is a great brotherhood of bearded men - and the women who love them.  Heck, maybe even Rasputin had a significant other   ;)

I love goats! (Not the same way Timmay does of course!  :D  )

That must be the Euro-Bear look which bears (pardon the pun) no resemblance whatsoever to the North American Bear. :*))  Just looks like a skinny GQ model who grew a beard.
