Title: Bold For Men Dry Shave Gel
Post by: Tyler on January 09, 2007, 11:45:55 PM
I tried out the new Dry Shave Gel this morning and I have to say that I'm impressed.  I was very curious to try out this gel since it's designed to use without water.  That's right, you put the gel on without putting water on your head first.

I opened the bottle and instantly smelled the fruity, menthol smell that oozed out the bottle.  It was a refreshing smell.

I then squeezed an amount about the size of a quarter onto the palm of my hand and rubbed it onto my scalp.  The instructions say to apply a thin layer onto a dry skin area and leave for 30 second before shaving.  I figured this was a good test since I hadn't shaved in two days, my usual routine.

I then broke out the HeadBlade, put a new Atra blade onto it.  I then started shaving as I usually would.  I didn't apply any water to the blade before doing this to see how slick the gel was on it's own.  It wasn't very slick on the first pass, so I assumed that the manufacturer assumed you would rinse the razor first.  (I thought this was a bit misleading since it's supposed to be a dry gel)  I then wet with hot water the razor to wash the hair out of the blade and then the gel was very slick.  So, it appears that you need to wet the razor, not your head, to get the proper glide.

The gel provided a very slick surface once the razor was rinsed.  I then completed my shave as usual by rinsing the blade out after each pass.  I was even able to complete my second pass in the reverse direction without applying more gel.

Pros:

I found this to be a very good, close shave without any nicks or burn (except where I did the first pass without rinsing the razor).

This would be an excellent shaving gel to use for someone who shaves at the sink as the gel provided a clean, mess free shave as opposed to wet shave gels.

The gel is clear, so it's easy to see where you missed spots without rinsing off the gel.

The smell of the gel was refreshing without being overbearing.

Cons:

The instructions should have been clear to indicate to wet the razor first.

Not ideal for someone who shaves in the shower as it's designed to be applied to dry skin.

Overall, I would recommend this gel to someone who shaves at the sink.  I plan on using it for those times that circumstances require me to shave in front of the sink.

I don't know where you can buy this product right now as their website (http://www.BoldForMen.com (http://www.BoldForMen.com)) does not indicate so.  I will write Abe Minkara, the founder of the company, to ask him when and where the product will be available to the public.

I will have to try this. But technically as you said, you have to wet the razor, makeing it a non-dry-shave. Also, I assmue that you have to clear and rinse your razor as you shave (as I do) therefore adding a little bit of water to the head. So really this can be called, a minimum water gel or something like that.

This product sounds very interesting but I have searched most online sites and stores and I doubt it is available in Australia. Will make note of it and order it on my next headblade order that I get my dad to send to me.

I was on board until I saw that price.  Isn't that a bit steep?  I've been just using baby oil, so I don't know what is reasonable for new stuff.  Does it come in a smaller size?  I'd just put it in my deployment bag, not use it daily...

Okay, I tried it out today when I got home from work.

Really doesn't take much, which is good since it only comes in 4 oz tube.

Nice smooth shave no mess; should really be called a minimal water shave gel, but that doesn't sound as cool as dry ::)

I have sensitive skin so for a while there my skin was red like after a really hot shower.  Didn't hurt but I was worried I'd have a red scalp when I went out, but it became pale again soon enough.  Must be the "warming" agent whatever that is.

On the face, same thing but I can't go against the grain on the face, so others may get a smoother shave than I did there.

Good product; definitely going to throw it in my travel toiletries so I don't hog shower time  and waste water when I'm staying with friends.

BTW I used the plain old pre-Power, pre-Turbo Mach 3 with it.

Cheers,

HJ

I splurged and bought a bottle of this two weeks ago when i was still shaving at the mirror.

I gotta say I was less then impressed.  I followed all the instructions and wet the razor ahead of time and it still didn't give me a very comfortable shave.  And ironically im used to shaving my face without any shave gel or cream because I trim around my goatee.  The hair seemed to grow back much faster then using shave gel too.

Have to give it a thumbs down, especially for the price.
