Who's seen Kingdom (Stephen Fry) Series 1 & 2? I loved it! Bought the Series 1 Region 2 DVD set from Amazon UK, but they haven't released Series 2 yet.
What's new and really good on BBC and ITV lately?
We have BBC America here but it's just turned into Gordon Ramsey on at all hours saying 'F@%&'. His time has really passed.
-
Hi, u can download it fom btjunkies series 2.If u are stuck i will download it for u and send it, but it will be in pal, i do not know if your dvd will play pal.
-
Hey Birdman, thanks . . . send me a link and I'll try to download it. When it was on the ITV site downloads were restricted to UK IP Addresses. I have an All Region player that can convert PAL to NTSC, so no worries there.
You may use the e-mail address in my profile if you prefer.

SimplyRed.. do you have access to the BBC website? I don't know if that's just for the uk as well... but they show a pretty good variety of shows on their 'iplayer'
I've recently been watching a documentary on there called Wild China, which is interesting.
You might also want to try the channel 4 website...
other than that, I only really watch documentaries or programmes like My Name is Earl (and re-runs of friends, of course!)... we have way too many soaps and reality shows over here IMHO. ooooh, they drive me crackers!
I prefer a good movie to most of the tripe offered on tv these days.

I thought 'Benidorm' was funny http://www.itv.com/Entertainment/comedy/benidorm/default.html
also Dom Joly's 'Complainers' along with his 'Happy Hour'
Just a few

Magma, Ian,
I'll check out all your suggestions when I get home this evening. At the office (it's early afternoon here in Chicago) most of those types of websites are blocked.
Magma or Ian, did you see Kingdom, the Stephen Fry series?

It is only for the UK. :(
-
You can actually buy software to fool servers into thinking you have a foreign IP address, i.e. UK or wherever you want, but I haven't been desperate enough to resort to that . . . yet.
-
On the topic of UK T.V. shows, have any of you over there watched 'Spaced'?
-
sorry Simply.. I haven't seen any episodes of 'the kingdom' :(
and Fortin... I've seen spaced.. obviously a Simon Pegg fan too! He's a funny guy.
I love him in Shaun of the Dead, that's a wicked movie!
-
Yeah, I have all his movies... I even have Spider Plant Man! the short he did with Rowan Atkinson. Run Fatboy is great too, but I still think Hot Fuzz was the best.
-
sorry Simply.. I haven't seen any episodes of 'Kingdom' :(
If you're at all interested Kingdom should be available from your local DVD rental outlet. It's a very good programme.

Getting back to Last of the Summer Wine, I have many of the older episodes but I like the Howard and Marina years (Mid-nineties through early 2000's. Also like Truly of the Yard better than Foggy. It was running regularly on one of the Chicago PBS affiliates, but stopped several months ago. Drat :'(

(Not UK TV, it's a movie) Just saw In Bruges. Bloody brilliant. It's out now in the US on DVD.

I'll set ya "straight" there Red.
Ballykissangel was a BBC television drama set in Ireland, produced in-house by BBC Northern Ireland. The original story revolved around a young English priest as he became part of a rural community. It ran for six series, which were first broadcast on BBC One in the UK from 1996 to 2001. A significant change in the cast occurred between the third and fourth series and to a lesser extent between the fifth and sixth.
Ah, hem! Thank you!
-
Thank you Fr8!!! I thought I was going crazy there when he said it was just a movie!
-
Ah, hem! Thank you!
My bad. I was referring to In Bruge, as opposed to questioning you unimpeachable knowledge of UK TV.
I grovel in humiliation at your superior knowledge (NOT).

Well Red as you like BBC so much you could volunteer to pay the $272.00 (£139.50) for this years (2008 ) TV license and it will increase next year, just like it does every year for a UK licence fee.
This is the fee that is compulsory paid to the BBC by us UK citizens to fund there programming etc. only here in the Uk we cant volunteer to pay it because as I mentioned, its compulsory!
Because of the BBC If you own a TV and even if you choose to never, ever watch BBC1 or BBC2 you still have to pay it! Because if you don't you will be hauled before a magistrates Court and will be fined a large amount of money and YOU WILL GET A CRIMINAL RECORD!
Dont believe me ask Magmababe or Ian!
-
t'is indeed true!
-
what makes it even more criminal is that pretty much ALL of the beebs programmes are tripe!
-
I believe you Jim. I guess we're pretty lucky with our television availability here in the US. We're just inundated with commercials. Whenever I sit down to dinner in front of the telly that's when the commercials for laxatives, diarrhea meds and vaginal creams comes on. What a joy television is :Xo!
Red
-
The UK TV Licence fee is paid to the Government. It is a tax levied for the operation of TV signal receiving equipment. It just happens that the BBC has a charter that grants exactly the same amount levied as funding from siad government. Even if the BBC charter was revoked (which has been suggested on various occasions) it is unlikely that the government would remove the tax. We would then be paying to operate any device which could receive a TV signal, and all channels in the UK would be funded through advertising or subscription.
Instead of the British Broadcasting Company, I prefer to think of the BBC as HM Government Propaganda TV and Radio. It isn't as snappy a name, but it captures the impartiality of the service nicely (not quite as blinkered as TASS, but movingin that direction).
It has been mooted that users of computer equipment in the UK capable of viewing streaming media such as the BBC iPlayer should also pay the tax, even if they don't have a regular TV as they are receiving broadcasts in a similar way.
I apologise for the interruption in your programme.
Sorry, that was a bit of a rant.
Normal service will be resumed as soon as possible.
-
We used to get a lot of very good programs from the UK. Ten years ago, most of the programs I watched were British. Gradually, the really good ones like "Cracker" and "Ballykissangel" came to an end, and nothing very worthwhile came along to replace them. Most likely it's because of the reality show craze which really ought to have run its course by now.
I was really excited when BBC America finally became available. I first got it in 2000 and for about a year, it was pretty much all I watched. But one by one, they dropped the worthwhile programs until all we were left with were "Cash In The Attic", reruns of reruns of reruns of "Blackadder" and DIY shows. When they dropped "EastEnders", I stopped watching BBCA altogether.
-
I watched Eastenders frfom the late 80's till it was dropped by BBC America. Really pissed me off.
-
My ex-wife used to watch Eastenders. Really pissed me off.

Anybody watch "Torchwood".?

then my suggestion to you is either turn it off... or have ya dinner later! ;D

Yes, that too. That's what was so infuriating when they took EastEnders off. Said the ratings were too low - well, they kept moving it all over the schedule so no one knew when it was on and they would only show the omnibus edition -- all 5 episodes back to back -- how are you going to attract new viewers that way? Nobody is going to sit down for 2 1/2 hours at one stretch and try to figure out who is who and what the heck is going on, if they aren't already familiar with the characters and storyline. They replaced it with programming that was a repeat of what was already being shown two times a day. I couldn't figure out how showing a rerun for the third time was going to get them the higher ratings they were looking for. :/O

OK, confession. I'm hopelessly addicted to the totally cheesy Bargain Hunt. David Dickinson's taste in suits has got to be the worst of anyone in Britain. Do you have a Worst Dressed List there? If so, he must make it every year.

I am happy to report I've acquired the second series of Kingdom on DVD. I got it through good ol' eBay from a UK seller. The second series was released as a subscription premium for The Daily Telegraph and wasn't released through the normal retail channels. I hope series three is not as difficult to get.
Fr8, the next six episode will be coming your way as soon as I've finished.
