Title: New Member Intro
Post by: stemikger on June 12, 2008, 11:58:55 PM
Hey guys,

I'm a brand spanking new member and actually today is my first day being shiny.  I have been wearing a crew cut for a while and today I actually took razor and shaving creme to my head.

I'm 44 years old and married for 16 years with a 13 year old daughter.  I could not believe the reactions I got.  My wife and daughter HATE it.  I can't believe how much.

People at work either loved it and/or hated it.  One woman told me I look like an Ax Murderer.  Real nice.

Oh well, not sure if I'm going to stay shiney or let it grow back into a crew, but to be honest I'm totally shocked how people reacted.  I must look real bad because baldness is very in vogue now and I dont' even look twice at a bald guy in the street.

Oh well thanks for letting me vent and introduce myself.

stemikger, welcome to Sly Bald Guys!  Sorry to hear that your wife and daughter are not big fans.  I'd give it 30 days to see if they can adjust and to see how YOU like it.  I'm shocked at the reactions also, as most guys have very positive reactions.

Welcome!

Most guys can pull the bald look off very well. I would suggest sticking with it for a week-a month and see what it's like. Maybe a pic would help  :)

stemikger:  welcome 2 the sly fraternity.  sorry 2 hear 'bout the negative vibes.  like tyler said... give it the 30 day trial, that's the unwritten rule here in the SBG forum.  after the 30 days... one will B able 2 decide whether 2 keep it smooooth or grow it back.   you've mentioned the reactions from your family & others; however, you've neglected 2 let us know your own reactions 2 your new look.  do U like it?

Hey Warhawk,

To be honest, I'm not sure yet.  I'm trying not to let the negativity get to me.  I will take Tyler's advice and give it the 30 day test.

Thanks.

Welcome here.  Sorry to hear about the negative reactions.

As Tyler wrote  - do the 30 days trial and see what you like.

There a many wives here who don't like the sly look, but their negative comments will fade.

Be familiar with your new look and start enjoying.

Best wishes.

Welcome to Sly Bald Guys, sorry to hear about the negativity you're receiving. You've got the right plan though, give it 30 days and then make your final decision.

Hey Stemikger: welcome to SBG's first of all O0

Sorry You've had bad reactions from family, but keep at it, and try it out for the 30 days as the other bro's suggest.  If YOU feel you can't live with it after 30 days then by all means grow it back to a crew, but see how YOU feel first.  Obce you get more confident about it, hopefully the family will see what a positive effect it is having on you and they will grow to like it too. 8)

Post a pic, and I'm sure you'll get encouragement from everyone here! O0

Welcome Stemikger.  It seems that the important thing should be whether you like being sly or not.  If you do, they you need to explain to others that you like it and that if they like/love you they should be happy for you.

Don't see what all the negativity is about.  You look perfectly normal to me.  Don't look a thing like an ax murderer.

No Magmababe it's not a twin.  I made the typical newbie mistake of creating two threads.

I'm amazed I figured out the whole photobucket thing.

You look GREAT sly.  You have the perfect shaped head for it and I am sure that the girts will get over it soon.   I went from very long hair in college, then to a crew and now to sly.  I doubt that I will ever go back.  Enjoy.

No Blonde jokes from this guy Barberette, my wife is blonde this week, last week she was red and the week before that. . .  Hey wait a minute, I never once questioned her about changing so much, but yet I shave the head and you would think World War III broke out.  Go Figure!!! ;D

Thanks Southworth.  I appreciate the comment about my head, my wife doesen't share the same view though.  Oh well, can't win them all.

Thanks B.  Unfortunately my wife isn't in that camp.

On a postive note, her sisters and her mom liked it when they saw me yesterday.  Her best friend, who is a gay female really LOVES it when I sent her a pic yesterday.  She even phoned my wife telling her how cool it looks and I actually look better without the hair.  So I do have some people pulling for me, but she just is not happy with the look and I know when I visit my mom, she will not be happy.   :-[

P.S.  You guys and girls are the coolest (non-judgmental) people I have ever met on the net.  Glad I found the site.

Thanks Stem, and I agree, this site has some really kool folks on it, non-judgemental , respectful, yet honest and supportive.
I have alot of fun on here, its like having lots of kool friends without having to worry about boundaries. Not many places on the net where I feel this safe and welcomed.  ^-^
And glad to hear that your other friends like your new look!

Sounds like you've got some people in your corner who can "work" on your wife and hopefully get her into a frame of mind where she isn't so upset about this.  At least that way you won't feel like you're living in a war zone.   ;)

Awe, that sucks dude that you have so much negative responses....I personally think it looks natural on you...looks cool to me.  In fact, I wish I looked that cool with a shaved head.  I can relate to the negative comments....my mother in law thinks it adds 10 years to me, my son thinks I look like a monster, a coworked asked why I keep shaving it because I have a cone head (and this dude has got worse male pattern baldness than me! WTF!)  It looks like you don' t have any thinning going on from your before PIC that I saw, so that's a plus if you decide to grow it back...I decide to grow it back and OMG, my Male Pattern Baldness/Thinning on top look godaweful....I've really only had one person at work tell me it looks great on me....so I know, positive feedback really helps and negative feedback really is a bummer.  I have shaved again because I was frustrated with the thinning look on top and just couldn't stand it any longer, but here I am today, SLY and I just wish I had a full thick head of hair....I desperately need positive reactions in person...I can count on you guys here at SBG's but I think you guys maybe a little BIAS since your purpose here is to support SLY and all it's benefits....I just wish I could get comfortable with myself...cuz I really like not having to worry if my hair is out of place! :)  and I don't have much of a choice when it comes to growing back my hair....basically I'm growing back my MPB....and we know that just looks like crap.  Anyways, I feel for you man!  Give it the 30 days if you can...sometimes it's just easier to please the wife and not hear the nagging....I know all about that. :)

Welcome stemikger!!!  Glad you found us.  Part of the SLY attitude is not caring what others think, even your spouse, family or co-workers.  That new attitude will come during the test period, that is the reason for the 30 day period.  They may even come around too.  You went through a pretty dramatic change.  Give everyone some time.

You look great by the way.

Max

This is the most liberating thing about this process H.  The headshaving thing has made me realize that what others think is really not relevant if it makes me happy.  Having said that I have always cared way too much what people thought of me, this has taught me a lesson, to please myself and the others will eventually come aroud.

Kman3, you and I sound like we are cut from the same cloth.  I thnk you look very cool and natural.  I am really going to try and stand my ground on this one.  Hang in there pal, you seem like a good guy and sometimes good guys do finish last.  I find the more I try to please the more I find myself having to go further and further to make others happy.

Jhickman, that is an awesome quote from Bill Cosby.  Truer words have never been said.

Hey, Stemikger.  Sounds like your on the right track.  There are some things that you have to decide for yourself.  And your appearance is one of those things.  Except in the case of something extreme, your wife and family have to respect you and trust your judgement about this issue.  I'm sure that you'd do the same for them.

Hey stem, welcome to the SBG site. Sounds like you are definitely on the right track.
It's ok to do what feels right for you, bro.

Once you stand tall and proud, people will realize that this is how you choose to live.
It's all about choice, your choice, and if you hold the resolve, in time those who are negative will realize this.
Stand your ground for thirty days at least, brudda. I do have a feeling that you won't need that many days to come to a conclusion though.

Good luck and keep us posted on your "slydom".

Joe
