Title: Feeling bad about MPB?
Post by: Razor X on June 12, 2008, 07:05:14 PM
The one place I go where there are as many, perhaps more, sly guys than hairy guys is the gym.  There's this one guy in particular; if I had to guess his age I'd say early 40s.  Shaved slick with a slight shadow that shows that he's completely MPB.  He's in excellent shape.  He only has one arm;  his left arm is completely missing from the shoulder.  It's amazing what he can lift with one arm and how he can keep his balance.  He does with relative ease what many of us with two good arms struggle to do.

So it just kind of struck me when I saw him working out tonight:  if this guy was given a choice and could have either his hair or his arm back, which do you think he'd choose?   ???   I've never even spoken to the guy, but I'd be willing to bet that he couldn't care less that he's bald.

Just something to think about the next time you feel like your life is ruined because you're going bald.   Just count your blessings, shave your head smooth, and get over it.  You're one of the lucky ones. ;)

LOL. Of course there's always someone who's worse off than for example me. Should that make me feel better? Should I feel better that I'm balding and living in our vain western society just because children are starving in Africa? I don't think so.

Yes I suppose it should make you feel better.  It should make you realise that there are more important things, that really there are far worse things that can happen.  Whenever I feel down about my MPB, i think, amongst other things, what would happen now if I was diagnosed with terminal cancer, I would have finished my life worrying about something which in the wider scheme of things if we were able to look in from the outside is a little trivial.

Yes bald men will always be held up for a certain amount of ridicule, but that is just human nature, to pick fun at things that deviate from the image of perfection.  But the same applies to big people, short people, fat people, thin people, need I go on.  Just a collection of the idiosyncracies that make the human race so fascinating.

Another story that springs to mind is an ex girlfriend.  She was 5ft 3 tall and size 8 UK (not sure of the US equivalent), but she was tiny.  She ate like a horse, did little exercise but was just small.  She had all her jealous (fatter) friends tell her how lucky she was for being 'skinny' what they failed to understand that she was experiencing exactly the same as them just in a different way, and the supposed victims were actually the perpitrators of making her feel worse.  What I am trying to say is that there is always an alternative view and sometimes we need to step outside of our skin, walk around in somebody elses shoes and imagine how people look at you.  I fear much more people thinking I am self conscious, vain and lacking in confidence than I do the fact that they might mention that my head shines a little more than it used to.  Afterall, each and everyone of those people has a little 'imperfection' of their own.  It is that imperfection that makes us all perfect!

Yes.  There's always someone worse of than yourself.  It really did put things in perspective.  Very wise words indeed.   O0

Why was it though, that I was reading down the posts and thought; 'I bet yep-yep won't agree with this - bet he'll post somethin arguing against it...'

And he did.  i wasnt disappointed. ::)

Sorry, yep-yep - but you're gettin a bit predictable here.

Yes, you should be thanking your lucky stars that you don't have worse problems to deal with.  :Xo!

Do you have any intention of ever putting this "problem" behind you or are you just going to whine and bitch about it forever?

This quote is the exact reason that things need to be put into perspective occasionally. Until you even realize that perspective matters, you won't feel any better about yourself or your situation (which really isn't s situation at all in my opinion).

Amazing.......

Can't anyone see how flawed a logic there is behind this whole "it could be worse" -thing? How hairloss affects an individual is basically a psychological problem and it doesn't go away like that. It's like saying "it could be worse, you could have cancer" to someone who suffers of schizophrenia. They are completely different things, you can't compare them IMO.

It doesn't go away if you're hell-bent on being negative.  You've been a member of this forum for nearly two years -- longer than I have, in fact.  Are you any closer to dealing with this "problem" now than you were the day you joined?  Where has all the hand-wringing gotten you?  If you want to spend years of your life moaning about something so trivial, there's nothing more anyone here can do to help you.

Yep-Yep....I think you're kinda missing the whole point of this thread.

It isn't about hairloss.. it's about putting things into perspective, realising just how good you've got it compared to others and being grateful for what you do have in life, not what you don't.

So please... explain to me the 'logic' behind self-pity?

I don't feel all that bad about going bald quite honestly.
I have had things put into perspective, by my own health.

Recently i've been getting tests done on a very large lump on my leg (when it was first measured it was approximately 13cmx13cm) which is located on the back upper portion of my leg around the hamstring.
This was quite a shock, as I figured it could be very bad, well a few weeks ago I found out what it was. The first thing my doctor said was "Good news, it's not going to kill you."
Having something so cut and dry having something that will kill you against something that won't, really puts life in perspective.
If you're curious, it was a toss up between 2 things, muscle cancer (which really is quite dangerous) and what I have which is treated like cancer, but isn't cancer.

I know it's not something that is going to kill me, but having something like that happen to me at such a young age really did open my eyes.
And honestly, it is still a very large procedure, with radiation for at least a month and then a huge (my doctors specific words) surgery.

So what if i'm losing my hair.
Life really could get worse.

It's made me much less negative, honestly.

Yes, nothing like a good reality check to help you put things in perspective.  Good luck with your treatments.  I'm glad it's not more serious.

It looks good, not so bad *ss, but was there any reason to ditch the goat, you seemed to really like it, I mean w/ the weekly trips to the barber for trimming and all.  I've thought of one, but the grey hair puts me off.  What's the story?

I actually agree with yep-yep. If that would be true you would never get exited from something just because you know people are dying of hunger. If you turn RazorX's statement around, this would also mean that every time you see someone that is more lucky, rich, more healthy etc. than yourself you also should relate to that guys faith (wich will probably lead to jealousy, bitterness etc.)?

I just recently discovered my hair seems to be thinning. I never realised that this could happen to me. I am pretty vain about my hair and like to change styles. If this thinning has got anything to do with MPB and is not temporarily and continues to thin on this speed i will have to cut my hair shorter. People probably will start noticing soon. I find this a pretty BIG deal! My soccer pals from when i was in my teens are all bald. Last week i told one of them that i thought i was thinning and he replied: "finally we can welcome you to our club"! I also found that a pretty BIG deal. Don't think i can get used to the idea of me turning into a baldy and becoming a "member".

Pretty superficial, i know. But no armless man or dying people can help that.

The titel of this thread was "feeling bad about MPB", therefor i shared my thoughts on that subject. I realise that my statement written down pretty 'primary' and i should have given it some more thought before writing. It was too blunt and maybe even outright insulting, especially that last sentence. there was no harm intended, but I appologise for that.

nevertheless, even i understand that this problem is insignificant compared to other problems. But in day to day life comparing this MPB- situation to really serious problems doesn't make me feel that much better. I am not a very negative person, but this "insignificant" MPB-problem has it's affect on self confidence which has some effect on overall mood. maybe in time the 'prospect' will not be so frightning. Nevertheless, i am not very close to acceptance.

How about this? If you were given a choice of loosing, your sight, a limb or your hair, which would you choose? And don't say I wouldn't choose any of them. Your first answer to this question will tell you a little bit about yourself.

I for one would choose the loss of my hair over the others. But then again I could very well loose my sight and a limb right along with my hair. Then I could really have something to B!TCH about. God forbid.

I feel fortunate that my hair is the only thing I have lost (other than my mind, gee I sure do miss it).  :/O

Actually I think I get both camps of comments on this. It seems we are all usually very focused on our own individual lives and our own personal trials and tribulations, successes and failures. What's a big deal to one person may however be a non-thought to another. Doesn't mean it isn't a big deal to the first person though.

For example, yesterday my son brought home a balloon yesterday from a party. It was twisted into the shape of a sword and he was so excited about it. Well, as you might imagine, it didn't take long for his "sword" to pop and that just shattered his world. To you and I it was just a little balloon -- but its getting popped upset him a lot. To him, it was a big deal.

Yes, we're adults and this is a kid, however, I think we, at least emotionally, aren't that far removed from kids much. Yes, we can get that there are more important things out there, but until it happens close to home, it unfortunately often doesn't seem to garner a lot of action or help ease our own demons.

That said, I, personally, do like to hear stories like this because it can help be a reality check, and knowing that you are better off in one respect than someone else -- or that things could be much worse, can sometimes help ease the other internal burdens and hang-ups we carry around.

But in day to day life comparing this MPB- situation to really serious problems doesn't make me feel that much better.

Maybe it would make you feel better, if there was something seriously wrong with you.  i know people who would much rather be losing their hair than have a serious illness.

I thought the statement was that "Politicians, like diapers, should be changed often and for the same reason!" ;)

Really think i didn't get my message across (my fault). Off course i would rather be bald than have a serious health problem off course. Just trying to come to terms with MPB, but probably this just isn't the place.

Well then Dave what was your message? I mean this is after all a forum for bald and BALDING men. If your message WAS about MPB then by all means please post it. I for one would like to know what's on your mind.
