Title: indiana flooding...
Post by: Timmay on June 09, 2008, 12:49:41 PM
For any of you who have been keeping up with the weather reports about Central and SW Indiana....its getting bad.  Really bad.    They are predicting that this could be the worst flood since 1913.  Terre Haute which lies just to the NW of me got 11 inches of rain on Saturday Morning and the whole town is just basically shut down.  Many towns between Terre Haute and Indianapolis are at a stand still with flood waters.  We are expecting to get 3-6 inches of rain this evening and that is only going to worsen things around here.  5 years ago was the first time ever that I have seen US 50 shut down do to flooding and today...it is down to one lane.  We have 3 major highways that take us out of Washington, all but 1 of them so far are closed.   We had a flood here 5 years ago and Washington was surrounded by water.  No going in and no going out for at least 3 days before the water retreated.  I heard just over an hour ago that the water is expected to be 30 ft over flood stage , that is 6 inches over the leevy hieght.  As soon as the water reaches to the top of the leevy and spills over it will run into the town of Plainville which will literally devastate that town of only about 300 people.
The outlook doesnt look good.  Interstate 70 yesterday closed down because the road gave way because of soft ground.  So if anyone is traveling in this area by chance...call for road conditions...because more than likely it isnt going to happen.
My family "should" be safe.  I live 2 miles from the river...but with the flood of 1913 the water was only about 1/4 mile away....and this time it is suppose to be worse...

Keep safe, I wondered why you hadn't chimed in this morning!

From a Katrina survivor, have a backup plan and fill your cars w/ gas, pack a "quick evacutation" suitcase for everyone and don't wait until the last road closes.  Put your insurance papers in a plastic bag and better yet, scan in and e-mail to yourself.  Take a video of your belongings that you leave behind if you evacuate.  TURN OFF THE GAS AT THE METER AND THE ELECTRICITY AT THE BOX if you leave to prevent fires. Empty the refrigerator unless you want to buy a new one--insurance won't pay for a new one if it doesn't get flood damage and the electricity is out for several days.  If you stay, PLENTY of water--fill the tubs too.

Good luck, God Bless, Keep us posted and run like Hell if you see Jim Cantore, even if he is sly--he seems to show up before every disaster.

Sounds like saint gave you some awesome advice Tim.  Take heed and get 'er done.   Like you said this could be worse than ever before.   So many people have waited until the last minute and then it was too late.   Keep us posted and I'll keep you and the rest of the state in my prayers.

I don't mean to nag, but I'm very serious about the not waiting until there's only one road out.  And don't drive through water, I know someone who died doing that during floods in the Santa Rosa area of California.

we are very fimiluar with the not driving thru water. It happens here all the time because people think that it looks shallow and its not.  THere is alot of force in the currents in those waters.  Besides...you cant tell if the road is washed out or not. ..

And to update you all....we have just now begun to get our storms.  It is coming down in buckets right now and so far...all is well...we are still in the safe zone.  They have already evacuated those who are in danger.

as of 11:44pm Eastern Time...we are getting drenched with rain.  The levee in a town just about 15 miles north of here has spilled over, Hwy 57 North of Washington is Closed...Hwy 50 that runs west is closed.  Hwy 257 that runs south of town is closed...We have two roads to lead us out of town at the moment.  The towns of Elnora, Plainville and Odon have been evacuated.  All of these towns lay to the north of us, all within 15 miles from me.
Neighbors went out andtook some pics of the flood waters.  They said they got to this one area where the deer were frantic.  They had no where to go and they charged at them.  They had to get back in their trucks to get away from them.  This is suppose to be the worst flooding here since 1913.  I really dont know what to expect because I wasnt around during that time although I have seen pictures back from the 1913 flood...but we have better drainage , I think...or at least I hope so.  Where my house is, it sits between two hills.  We have no water in our basement yet...because we fixed our drainage pipes about 2 years ago...but my road is flooded at the moment.

here in Washington we got 4 inches of rain last night that did not help the outlying areas.  All major roads have been shut down.  The one main highway that never floods is now 3 feet underwater.  A city 20 miles west of here was just reported that there was a breach in the levee and that city is now flooded.  They called in the national gaurds at around 4 am this morning to sandbag the levee but they couldnt reinforce it fast enough.  So far as for here in the city of Washington we are fine.  No major flooding...but it is like we have a huge ass moat all around the city.  We are going to go out tonight and try and get some pictures to post up on here.  Just letting everyone know that we are OK.  We are going to survive, but....we have more storms moving in on Friday...sooo  I dunno.  Outlook doesnt look good.

Reading your posts - it's as if you live on the border of the sea with storm and floods and not in Indiana in the middle of this huge continent.
We know such weathers here in HH not far from the Northsea.

Be careful.

Good luck and best wishes!

Just reported about 5 minutes ago...city of Plainville is now closed down.  The levee broke and water is spilling over into the town.   That is bringing it closer to washington which is only 7 miles to the north.    still holding our own here...but any other breaking news I will let you all know.

Sure go ahead and post them up.  I am just glad you were able to make it thru Nomad.  We are going out tomorrow to take some pics.  They say the town of Elnora looks like the atlantic ocean.  You can barely see the tops of the stop signs....crazy.  Well all is still good surrounding the Bateman household and property...keep fingers crossed...more storms moving in tomorrow night...

See ya all in a bit...I am at work printing out Busch Garden Tickets....woooweee!  VACATION STARTS FRIDAY!  You all even get  a vacation from me....cause I wont be on here for 9 straight days...what ever shall you do. lol

*****UPDATE********

At around 630 am eastern standard time they issued a voluntary evacuation order.  The levee about 3 miles north of town broke.  The conservation officers noticed a sudden increase in water and they went up river to find a 180 ft section of the levee collapsed.  They are calling for a boil order on the water.  There are going to be many places surrounding my house that will be flooded.  We are going to see flooding in places we have never seen before.  My concern is being blocked from getting out of Washington.  We only have 2 roads to get out of....and we leave for Florida on Friday.  I will keep you posted..

I just got a call from Timmy.  He was in the process of filling all his sinks, bathtubs, and anyother containers with water.  The towns water was going to be shut off within.  The hour.  He was probably going to be leaving the house and would very probably be away and not able to respond to posts or email for awhile.  He wanted everyone to know that he and his family are fine and he'll check-in as soon as possible.

just checking in real quick here...not leaving the house yet..but we have lots to do.  Here is the latest updates...

A levee break on the swollen White River sent floodwaters pouring into several square miles of farmland and caused authorities on Wednesday to urge residents to evacuate.

The levee failed early Wednesday near the rural community of Capehart, and the floodwater was within six inches of topping the protective casing around the drinking wells for the nearby city of Washington by late morning, said state Rep. Dave Crooks, speaking for the Daviess County Emergency Management Agency.  At this time the water should be shut off in about an hour.

OK Here is an ****UPDATE*******

Waters are receeding! YEA!!!!!!!!! Thats one good thing.  Other good thing is they didnt shut our water off and we are not under a boil order.  Things started to improve around 5 this afternoon.
We were able to keep everyone in the city with only evacuating those who lived on the outskirts of town.  Those people will be without a home for some time as most of them were underwater.
Things are looking much better. They are in the process of trying to build the levee back up as much as they can.  Thanks for all the prayers you all have sent this way because obviously they have been answered.  All the phone calls and concerns were greatly appreciated.  Events like this brings the brotherhood to the surface.  Thanks again you all.
