So I'm out during lunchtime on a four mile run. Part of my route takes me through one of our local parks that borders an elementary school. Since it's lunchtime, the kids are out on the playground running around, playing tetherball, kickball, four square, etc etc. Towards the end of the playground are four boys playing some type of team handball game (I think my son called it "Wallball"). Anyway, one of these boys (probably a 4th grader) was a little sly bald guy. O0 I don't think it was even a buzz cut, it was totally shaved. As I ran by, he saw me, shouted to get my attention, and rubbed his his dome with one hand and used the other to give me a thumbs up.
I shouted "Rock on, Sly Bald Dude!" 8) and gave him the "Hawaii Hang Loose" thumb/pinkie gesture. He had the biggest smile on his face. It was a cool moment.
Anyway, had to share it with the board.

Cool! Pretty gutsy kid to sport a completely shaved head at that age.

schro: rock on, brah! that was an awesome story! O0

Yeah, I thought it was pretty cool.
As much as it's pretty accepted in the adult world, I was wondering if he was suffering some type of ailment that caused his hair to fall out and his parents "cleaned up" his dome. As you all know, kids at that age can be pretty mean.
The smile on that kids' face was pretty awesome.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking Shro, hopefully the little dude is doing well. It's awesome he acknowledged you as a bald brother.

In hindsight, I should have stopped and chatted with the kid. But, I was thinking that the supervisors would have frowned upon adults talking to kids on the playgroud.
-
awsome story schro! these are the little things that makes a good day.

Yeah ... you might end up never being allowed near a school again. :*))
Even if he did have a medical problem that required him to have his head shaved, it's great that it's so accepted these days that he can actually like it. Can you imagine what that would have been like when we were kids? There was a kid in my second-grade class who had cancer. We didn't really know what was wrong with him at the time; we just knew he was sick a lot and the medication he was on made his hair fall out. I don't think anyone ever made fun of him, but I remember thinking how horrible it would be to hae no hair. Nowadays, that part doesn't matter so much.

That was really cool schro. Regardless of his reason for being sly, your validation of it and his smile in return sounds like you helped to make his day.

Please don't be mad at me but I don't think a 4th grader should be sly.If I ever saw a kid that young with a bald head my first thought would be,"CHEMOTHERAPY" as I think most people would think. There's plenty of time for him to be sly when he gets older. Especially this generation of kids today are much crueler than we ever were.I can't imagine what the other kids are calling him. It's great that he has a good attitude about it but a kid that young looks a little strange bald. It's as strange as when a woman sports that look.

I remember when I was in 3rd grade I shaved my head when my parents weren't around. I buzzed it off and took my dad's electric and went to town. but i never got any good reactions, and i was grounded for 2 weeks.

Schro extremely cool story. Thanks for sharing. O0
I am wondering if it was a medical situation, he found this site and it made him accept himself.
That would be great if this site helped the kid.
Nevertheless, the kid is one sly little guy.
Man, see what you did, you made me cry. I haven't cried since 4:00 when I was watching Oprah. :'(

Yeah, it was a cool moment. Too bad the school year has ended. I would have loved to run by that school and chat with that kid.
The smile on his face was huge.
