I've had a lot of sleepless nights this past week.  Not sure why.  I have bouts of insomnia now and then but hadn't had any trouble sleeping in a long time until this past week.  If I lie awake in bed for too long and it gets past a certain hour, I begin to get frustrated and then there's no hope of getting to sleep.  I usually try to get up and read a little, watch TV or surf the net -- for about 20 minutes or so.  Sometimes a cup of hot decaffeinated tea helps.

I know what you're going through, and it's no fun.  Hope you can get some rest soon.

If I have trouble sleeping, I have some cd's of 'natures sounds' (waves gently breaking) and some chilled out classical music,  that normally works for me. You could try giving that a go.  A warm, malted drink might help as well, or you could try some breathing techniques.

have a look at this link and this can help you determine the problem and possibly help
with a solution.

I used to live with a girl who was an Occupational Therapist who was great at relaxation techniques.  One that worked really well for me when i had trouble sleeping.

Start by clenching your toes, concentrating only on the action of clenching your toes, then tense your calves, quads, etc etc until you have worked all the way both up and down your body.  Generally i never made it to the top. Strange but it seems to work.

I also have one or two bizarre rituals that help me sleep over the noise of my 1yr old snoring through the baby monitor!  Count down from 7657 in fives, or name in my head in alphabetical order all English Premier League teams, i have never got to the end!!  Actually I have just re read that and realised how sad that sounds!   :*))

Have you broken your normal exercise routine Ben?  I find that sleepless night occur most for me when I have been stressed and don't get any cardio exercise.  Walking, mowing lawn, whatever and I am back to a good nights rest.

I feel your pain, I have had insomnia on and off over the years but was at it's worst when Levi was a new born.

Best thing that has worked for me is meditation and Acupuncture. (That way you can actually treat the cause and not just cover it up with meds etc).

Works a treat.

Whenever I have difficulty going to sleep. I drink a warm glass of milk. According to age-old wisdom, milk is chock full of tryptophan, the sleep-inducing amino acid that is also well known for its presence in another food thought to have sedative effects, turkey.

I agree with skiking - a few drinks does the trick.
Sleeping is not usually one of my problems.  If I get still - lights out!
