Title: Thinking about taking the plunge - Just need the Guts to do it!
Post by: DS314 on May 25, 2008, 08:47:35 PM
I've been bald on top since age 24.  At age 35 I was laid off and bought a hair piece.  Believe it or not it looks real.  I will be 44 in July and I'm sick of dealing with the hair pieces. I go through about 4 of them per year.  My hair on the sides is getting grayer and my ego is lowering so I do not feel it's such a big deal now to go bald.  However I'm kind of wussing about doing it because of work.  I have hair now and one day I just show up totally shave except for my goatee.  Has anyone out there wore a hairpiece and how did you explain just going bald.  I'm sure at first there would be some talk but after a month or so myself and others would get use to it.

Just take a deep breath and do it.  The first few moments after you show up to work completely bald might be a little awkward, but not nearly as awkward as you may think they will be.  Everybody worries about reactions at work, and 99 times out of 100 the reaction is positive or neutral.  It's well worth a few moments of awkwardness for the lifetime of freedom you will gain instead.

If your piece is natural looking and no one can tell, then no one will ever need to know.  A lot of guys shave full heads of hair because they like the bald look.  Just say you're one of them.  It's nobody's business anyway, and the truth is, most people don't really care that much.

We've all been where you are and know how scary it can be.  But we'll all tell you that we felt better afterwards, and when we look back, we wonder what we were so afraid of and why it took us so long to do it.  You're 44.  Shave and you'll look 34.

I will tell you what i did: I grow A LOT of hair. Hair is something generous in my gene makeup.
After going bald for a Leukemia benefit last year i "discovered" something that makes me feel great and wish,in some ways, that i had been bald since school.
So if us guys that can grow hair can do it and be proud,so can you my friend!!
At least you won't have to shave your melon twice a day like i do.THAT can be a pain but i'm happy to do it.
The only downfall is going through razors often.
I think the Headblade folks are going to like me with my monthly orders  ;D ;D

Shave it and let us know how it goes.

Jim

It doesn't take guts, just a razor.

You may or may not get a few comments from your friends, family, and co-workers at first but you might be surprised how many of them are positive or just question why you did it.

It's your head so do what you want and what makes you happy.

You won't regret it, and people will notice, but you don't have to tell them you were balding or anything.  Just say you were sick of hair, which IS after all the truth, isn't it?  Everyone here will tell you the same thing over and over again, that it's probably one of the most liberating things you can do, but remember, the choice is up to you, and you alone.  You said it yourself though, going bald is no big deal anymore, so really it sounds as though you've already decided.  Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

maybe just confronting the situation "head" on and coming "clean" will work for you. I don't know what you are like or if you have the type of personality that when asked can just say "Yeah, I wore a hairpiece and now I dont".

That is pretty much what I would do, after that there really isn't much anyone can say.

You will most likely find that the reactions you receive will be far more subtle then you imagine.

Either way, like everyone else has said, you wont regret doing it.

I've lost track of how many times I've said this, but it bears repeating.  Almost every day I see anywhere from six to a dozen sly guys on the street -- average Joes, most of them wearing suits and 99% of them have a shadow that reveals that they've got MPB.  I have yet to see one that looked so bad that I thought the guy needed to grow his hair back ASAP.  That's not to say there aren't ugly bald guys out there -- there are -- but they're usually ugly for reasons unrelated to hair or lack thereof.

In this day and age, if there's anybody who stands out and looks out of place, it's a guy under the age of 50 with MPB who hasn't shaved his head.  Honest.   O:O

I wore rugs for many years, spending big $$ to have them hand-made with Italian hair.  They looked as good as rugs can look.  But, as much as you think others can't tell, they really can.   Tear that fur hat off your head, my friend, and free yourself of the ongoing burden and restrictions that accompany it.

Believe me, I had a hard time getting the guts to tear if off and start shaving.  The guys on here convinced me to go for it.  My wife had been begging me to do it for 2 years, but after 2 weeks in here I went for it.

I was freaking out about going to work that first day but it ended up being completely uneventful.  I was prepared to just come clean with anyone that asked about my former rug, but it never came up.  I ended up getting many more compliments than expected, and especially from some very hot women.  Eliminating all of the restrictions that came with the rug has truly changed my life.  I really should have done this much sooner.

Tear it off and shave ....  You definitely won't regret it.

Andrew

It doesn't take guts, just a razor.

Go for it. Just shave it off. Get that weight off your head & shoulders. 8)

I was really freaked out when I showed up at work with a slick mellon because I'm in front of the public every day. But I just realized that these people don't know me and could care less REALLY whether I have hair or not. I started experiencing MPB when I hit 30. And I didn't take the plunge until I was 46. But now that I've done it I wouldn't have it any other way.

no guts necessary...

Stop spending the money on the rug and free yourself. You will be amazed.

Here's a before pic.

It was even worse in the back.

Adn btw-I wish I had been bald and over with it since I started thinning at 21.

Me too!!!

When I showed up at my new place of work (new, as in, < 1yr), I had nothing but good comments.  One feller really liked it, one gave me the old "ahh! I can't see from the glare" routine (but we shoot the poop all the time so that's cool), another mentioned he was considering it (he's got the lunatic fringe going on now... he could stand to be sly), one girl rubbed the dome  8), and a couple others (young'uns) asked what prompted me to shave.

Nothing negative, nothing untoward, no weird looks, etc.  Go for it, I says!

Shaving your head is scary!!  This is what I did,  I buzzed my head with clippers #3, then #2, then #1 (all in one session) and then I used a razor.  Baby steps made the shock value less for me.

Umm I got hair at the moment because I don't want to deal with the negative comments from my family members.  But I was bald almost 2 years ago lol.  I'm thinking about getting the courage to shave it all off again.  Well, its not like I'm afraid too... its just that I don't want to deal with the family bugging me about it again.

I know, I know.. I don't like the way my hair looks now.  I should shave it all off now, but I don't have a razor.  Is the new fusion any good?  Whats it called... the black one? Phantom?

Err the razor with the trimmer on the bottom.  Thats the one I'm talking about.

Hey dog I think you need a new pair of glasses,
'cause I was never in a boy band.
You're the third person that's confused me with another bald dude.  :Xo!

DJ_Bald said I'm some famous fighter and Dan-O-Mite said I'm this guy David something. I know to the untrained eye that us baldies all look alike, but I'm no one famous.
I'm just an ordinary citizen with an extraordinary haircut.  8)

Dog, have you ever heard of the phrase, "No guts, no glory."
You too can have a glorious bald head. It's just one shave away.
Have the guts to headshave and you too will have the glory.  O0

Hey DS321.  I know I am late in weighing in on your post.  HOwever, I am a former rug wearer of 23 years.  Began wearing one when I was 20 because of MPB.

Last June I took the leap.  Lost the piece and told the barber to skin it down.  Went home and shaved the rest smooth on a Friday afternoon.

Went to work on Monday with a new zip in my step.  I am an attorney.  I even had a trial that Monday.  Decided there was no time like the present so I did it.  My client that day said - man you look great.  That client was in the office again about a week ago and told me he was jealous of my look - and he has a whole head of hair.  He said he wished he knew he would good with no hair.

The first day at the courthouse and the office was nothing but compliments.

One of the greatest days of my life when I lost the wig.   O0

I see he changed his avatar pic.....personally i don't think any avatar pic he uses is of himself. i guess if you're too shy to show yourself you can try to make people think your some kind of bald model, whatever floats your boat.

Just do it. I shaved mine off on a Friday, so by the time Monday came around I had some stubbles going to work. But,,,,I was shaving it down with a clipper for years anyways, so the difference between #1 guard and bald didn't seem to make a difference. As others have said,,,,,just do it, and care less what others think.

I'm 27 and I've been sly for two years.  I was thinning in the front progressively for about two years and it was becoming very noticeable no matter how I styled it.
I took the plunge right before I took a two month European study abroad/vacation.  By the time I was back at school I was completely used to the new look and feel.
It took me about two weeks to get used to it, and I immediately liked it.

First I buzzed it with no guard, then once I was on the road I just started using a Mach 3 to get it really clean.

It took me about a week to get completely used to it and after 2 weeks people will be done commenting.  People's reactions were about 90% positive (my mom didn't like it at first until it tanned up abit).

The reaction from females was decidedly positive.  There is a subset of women that LOVE bald men, and I have found them.

I'd say first buzz it down then take it all the way to the skin after that if you want.  Just be sure to read the proper directions so you do it right.

My sister is a producer for a pretty big news station, and one of the guys she works with (on air) had his hair blow off at a golf event, I can't even begin to think how he must have felt! I think he may shave now that everyone he works with knows. (they did anyway) My sister told him and her boyfriend how much I like it, (she wants her thinning boyfriend to shave) but that first time is kinda scary!

Your new look will soon grow on everyone, and you will feel so free, good luck!  I cast my vote to break out the razor! O0

When I first did it I had a full head of hair.  I remember my boss told me I looked like a gay forest ranger.  I really feel it contributed to my demise from that job a year or so later.  He never really got used to it.  This guy was really different though;  had I worked for a normal employer I think it would have been fine.  Out here in the toolies people tend to say their thoughts outloud a lot.  I mean,  what exactly does a gay forest ranger look like (me bald?)

I am still sly,  will never go back,  and now everybody thinks it is normal.  I love it.  Even my wife says people think I look better.

Look,  just do it,  walk into work and say,  "Its my new look,  what doyou think?"  Just be really bold and be the first to talk about it.  It'll be fine.  There are sooooooo many sly folks eeeeverywhere.  Its not even like it is a bold move anymore really.

It look's like I posted this thread in late May.  I haven't taken the plunge yet but plan I being completely bald by the end of October.

I work for a large company and I'm switching jobs, bosses, co-workers, buildings as soon as my current supervisor releases me.  I will be tossing the rugs.  I'm glad to because I do martial arts and other fitness activities and I sweat a lot.  I'll try to get some pictures up on the board soon.  Plan on using the Jergens stuff also.  Guessing the sides (where there is hair) will be lighter than the top of my head.  The reason I did not do it sooner was I just did not feel like explaining why I did it to my coworkers.  Why do I care.  Don't have a clue.  My family is fine with it.  I'm sure though I'll be razzed a little by my older brother though.  I just feel better about doing this now then back in my twenties.  One of the issues I'm having now is that my hair is thinning at my back hairline and it's creeping up.  So it's time.  Thanks for all of your support.

It's only hair. I hope you set yourself free soon.

You're going to look tougher in Martial Arts class. Don't forget a headband. Sweat runs in your eyes faster but it's so much fun to wipe down and keep going. In that setting, sly looks especially good. You're gonna love it.

Used it 3 days now on one of my love handles.  It works as advertised.  Will post pictures soon.

I did, I really did.  I can't believe it myself.  When I got home today from work I  put a 1/8 inch guard on the shears and got down pretty close to my scalp.  Then I used this electric razor to get trim more.  Then finally used the Fusion to finish the job.  I did take pictures every step of the way and will post them hopefully sometime tomorrow if I can figure out how to post them.  Of course my sides and the back of my head is really white.  I took a shower and applied the Jergens stuff.  I have to admit so far it's hard for me to get used to.  I'm sure within a week I'll be more comfortable with it.

I did, I really did.  I can't believe it myself.
I have to admit so far it's hard for me to get used to.  Dave

Dave, congratulations.  O0
You'll adjust to the new bald you. In a few days you'll be saying to yourself, why didn't I do this sooner.

Congratulations, Dave! Awesome move and cool pics...and real proof you put the "rug" where rugs belong. On the floor.

Now you can enjoy the freedom of a slick sly shaved head!

Here are some more pictures.  Somehow the first group of pictures that I posted were deleted.  I had to add the picture of my buddy who is in the first picture with me.

Welcome, and great looking.  I just went back to the beginning of this thread, nearly six months.  You're another testament to the FACT that no one needs to feed the coffers of the people who feed off of the fear engendered by MPB.  It's strange really when you think about it, we get all stressed out about lossing our hair, and the dollars can flow to try to stop that anxiety, but the answer isn't avoiding the fact, it's in accepting the fact and going with it.  We worry about people looking at our receding hairlines, holes in the back of the head, general thinning.  We get obsessed about it, combovers, elaborate combovers, expensive shampoos and conditioners, rugs, drugs, all the expense to fight the "cause" of our anxiety, and for so many of us the answer is literally there.  Going for bald, not running from it.
Welcome to the Freedom of Sly.

I'm starting to get used to it more.  I have to admit I like the freedom so far.  I went to the city recreation center where I live last night for the first time totally bald.  I'm not sh**ting received a lot of looks mainly from the females.  Of course I do not know what they are thinking.  Hopefully it's not bad.

I've been sly since Aug 22nd 2008 and I kid you not... I've had more experiences with females since shaving my dome in the last 3 months than I have in the last 10 years. Granted I was married most of those 10 years but since turning single this summer along with the new doo.... If I gave out details you would think I was bragging.

The look suits you, add that to some confidence and standing out in a crowd...  Believe me dude, the ladies aren't thinking anything bad unless by bad you mean "naughty".   >:D

:@`Don't feel glum.....most of us were likeyou. We finally realised our situation was not going to improve by waiting around  trying to make up our minds. There will come a moment when you will risk it and take the rest of the fuzz off. Then take a good look at yourself and I guarantee you will like it.
