Title: Another reason to be glad you're sly
Post by: Razor X on May 23, 2008, 07:08:11 PM
I went to a barbershop near my office today for my weekly goat trim.  They posted a sign informing customers that they were raising their prices due to a rent increase.  The price for a man's haircut is now $22.   This is just a plain-vanilla, no-frills barbershop, not a fancy salon.  When I was at the buzz cut stage and still getting the sides buzzed tighter than the top, I'd get a haircut at least every two weeks.  No way I could afford that at these prices.

Luckily, the goat trim still only cost me $5.   :)

That's pretty high. The barber close to me still only charges ten bucks.

$10- $12 is about what I used to pay, but it's been about 5 years since I needed one.  Before that, when I had enough hair to actually style, I'd pay a stylist about $20 to $25.

I was paying $30 a cut to preserve the mop and tend to the "combover."  Once I buzzed, I started doing that myself, but it was only like five weeks until I finished up.  I really liked my barber--we had a relationship of at least 15 years--, and if I had enough hair not to have a combover, I might not have gone Sly.  But, MPB marches on and I just had to get out front.

I had tired of paying such outragoues prices so i bought a Wahl hair trimmer and used it  a few times a month until i went sly.
Now it gets NO use LOL

When barbers are raising prices for no real reason (why would gas prices affect it THAT much? A 20% increase? )
then i'm sure happy to be sly!

I haven't been to get my hair cut in over 8 years. I buzzed my own for over 7 years before i went SLY.

Wow 22 for a barber is steep. I was paying 11 before started shaving my head.

Although, between the razor cartridges, KOS gel, Matte for Men, and other head shaving products, keeping it sly isn't exactly cheap either. But it's def better than 22 every two weeks.

It was a rent increase, not the gas prices.

In my "barber days" Louis went from $25 to $30, and I was dumb enough to ask if he bought a new fishing boat.  He did, I paid :/O :/O!  Nice guy, but I'm not paying for anymore fishing boats for a barber--EVER AGAIN O:O!

I think it's more of a trade because disposable razors are outrageously expensive! I get 1.5 to 2 total head shaves out of each one! If I could use those Sweeney Todd razors, I would, but until then I'm trading haircuts for razor blades. Also, I have to shave my head far more often than I would ever get a haircut. A haircut can go a few extra weeks; a shaved head can't go 3 days when MPB is involved.

Disposable razors are a false economy.  The only decent disposable I've ever come across is the Schick Extreme 3.   The Mach III disposable is supposed to be good from what I've heard, but I've never tried it.  I get two weeks out of a regular Mach III blade.

Did you say "2" weeks.  ???
Is that the same blade for both face and head?
I'm lucky to get one weeks worth of shaves from a regular Mach lll blade.
I find that disposables rip and pull. Never had success with them. Very irritating.

Yes and yes.

Ouch, I tried using the same blade for my head and face and it tore me up.  Now, I use one for the noggin, which lasts about 2 weeks, then a different one for my face which lasts longer than that.  I just change blades when I notice the last shave wasn't great.
