Everybody's different, but it usually takes a while. I shaved a few times before sticking with it permanently. I made the mistake of not following the 30 day rule the first few times. The last time, I forced myself to stick with it for 30 days, and when the time was up, I didn't want to grow my hair back. Hang in there!
-
it was really easy for me ..the Military was not keen on long hair..lol i started a year before i left for bootcamp.....it only took two weeks for me...i had ladies rubbing my head and kissing it all the time so there was no going back for me...
-
I think it is different for everyone, but I think a big thing is this..
if you dig the bald on other people and have wanted it for yourself(because you think it looks good), I think you grow to like it real fast...like that's what you should have looked like..
if you do it just because you feel that's the only option (and bald kinda looks hidious or sick), it may take a while...
but you could still grow to LOVE IT ;)
-
It took a while...a lot of it had to do with my wife's dislike for it. Other than The Lovely Mrs. Schro, I got a lot of compliments on it.
Probably a few months for me.
Totally diggin' it now.
SLY FOR LIFE.
-
I liked it immediately but I think it took me about a month to really realize that it was there for good........
-
For me it was more never getting used to thinning hair, so once I decided to carry out the "Plan" I never looked back, but I'm amazed everyday how well it has turned out. I had all the worries that are mentioned on the Forum by new guys who have yet to shave, "Will my head look funny?, Will shaving be a chore?, Will the bumps show?, etc." Those worries were never validated. Instead, from day one compliments--and I still really enjoy that and I'm not entirely used to being complimented by friends and new acquaintances--and I'm glad it still surprises me. My wife, like many others, never has signed on but at least she has to have had a couple of drinks now to say anything, and since that is generally in a social setting w/ friends who all not only approve but in many instances are offering continuing admiration, her derogatory comments are few and far between. I don't know when or if I'll get over the pleasure of being freshly "baby butt" smooth after shaving, it's right up there w/ good sex. Yup, I hope I never "get used to it" because this is too good to lose.

It takes a few weeks. You know u r there when u stop looking at yourself in the mirror.
-
i loved my new look (immediately) but it took awhile (a few weeks) until i got 100% adjusted 2 it.

getting bad comments is really annoying and i guess it hurts somehow to get it from family and friend.
but if u like it and feel more comfortable in beeing bald and not beeing the balding man, go for it.
maybe tell your fam. and your friends before you plan the next shave and tell how you u feel about it.
i know it's not easy, i have similar issues the shorter my hair got. never had the smooth look though.
but i'm not far away from doing it, since i joined the forum 2 weeks ago.

It takes time to adjust to anything new. My wife is expecting our first child any day. I know it's going to be tough adjusting to another life coming between my wife and I. It's been a great long extended honeymoon. We do have a dog, so I guess we already do have another life between us. But dogs and kids aren't exactly the same! Don't look forward to the late night crying and feedings. >:(
But back to the subject at hand. I seemed to luck out when I initially went sly. It was for our engagement party and a surprise for everyone including my bride to be. My sly bald head was the hit of the party and I haven't looked back since. When I asked my wife if I should grow my hair back for our wedding she looked at me as if I was crazy. ???
Guess I'll be sly till I die! 8)

Congrats on the little sly surfer bro! Should have told the class, we'd have had a party for you complete with a ton of gifts...but sounds like it's too late for a "pre-party"! ;)
Of course you'll be sly till you die...is there any option that's really better?! O0
-
I got used to it straight away!!!My wife...well a few weeks.

I went sly in March. I'm still not totally used to it. But I have no plans of growing it out. Sly for life, here

I'll be sly till I die!
I like that SlySurfer.
-
It was instant for me. I wasnt even finished my very first razor headshave and I knew it was right for me and I was a permanent bald man.
-
I'd liked the look on others for so long that it really didnt take me long to get used to it when I went sly, but it took a good six or seven months before I could catch my reflection in a mirror or window etc without getting a shock of surprise that I had actually got the hairstyle I had always wanted! :) I used to look twice and think 'Wow! Is that really me with that shiny dome!?' 8)
-
I been sly since Sunday, and I love it. I dunno if I'm used to it. It doesn't surprise me too much when I look in the mirror, but every time I see my shadow I freak out a little on the inside. Bald shadows look so weird!

I was digging it right away. My wife took a couple of weeks.
Everyone else? Some positive and some negative, but who cares.

Stop looking in the mirror? I've never stopped looking in the mirror. Headshaving has brought out the narcissistic side of me. In fact I find myself looking into any reflective surface just to get a glimpse of my freshly shaved bald head.

Yep -- same here. I never miss an opportunity to catch a glimpse of myself in mirrors, windows, etc.

Another ratification of actions, although I also looked in the mirror, carefully, to make sure the "combover" was still tightly sprayed in place. Now, it's a continuous relief that cr*p is gone. 8)

I liked it as soon as I shaved, but it took a couple of weeks to get used to the new look.
I loved shaving the noggin' smooth and the feeling that goes with it. After that, I knew this was the way for me. O0
-
Just like xnewyawka, loved it as soon as I shaved. Nothing like the feel of a freshly shaved noggin.
-
Last January is when I first shaved my head. It was only a size 2 though, but I did I completely on a whim and decided that short was the way for me to go (Before that I had really long hair).
And two days ago I decided to try the sly look. Everyone thinks it's too radical for me, but boy do I love it.
On an interesting side note, my mother was with me for that first haircut to a 2, she thought I was going to get it trimmed, but I certainly didn't.
...the look on her face was priceless. The lady that cut my hair was laughing so hard she probably came close to slicing open my jugular with the shaver.

Too Radical....paleeze!
Dude, a buzz makes you cool..but shaved bald makes ya SLY!
Do what YOU want bro (and glad to hear it's smooth)...trust me, the world will be happier!
-
Man, I've never had a problem with doing what I want. Other people's opinions have never bothered me :) But they sure are fun to get.
SLY is the way for me.
-
I was in shower half my head shaved looking in the mirror and new I would never go back. I love my sly head :@`
-
Instantly, but then I'd been buzzing my head with no guard for over two decades at that point.
-
Shaved off my thinning hair 2 weeks ago. I do look like a much stronger person but I don't feel it.
My mind is totally controlling myself, when I look myself into the mirror, I got the right attitude and think that I look good and all that. BUT all my confidence goes away after awhile again because my mind start talking to m. My mind is questioning my looks all the time when I'm not in front of a mirror. Its hard to understand or explain but it is a big problem for me.
I will have to get rid of my speaking mind if I'm gonna get any women or self confidence.
-
William, confidence is not just something that you get overnight. You need to continue to work on it.
-
Why not start by posting an avatar that contains a real photo of yourself? Hiding isn't going to do anything for your confidence.
Heck, if I can put my ugly puss out there for everyone to see, anyone can!
-
Started shaving 3 months ago and got used to it after I found THE SLY site. Great place to find how to and not to do. Stay focused Brother in SLY we trust.

Only took me a couple days to get used to being sly.
I like it much much better than before so that made it easy.
-
Have had very short hair for a looong time. Wife normally just buzzed it with a 2 or 3. So I decided here a week or so ago to just shave it all off. So far so good, but its going to take a little longer to get used to, and a little longer to get the shaving technique down path. Need to get some color on the noggin too.
-
I never thought about if I accepted the look or not. When I shaved my head I was in the Army and 2 days after I shaved I was being yelled at by my Ranger Instructors at the top of their lungs, so thinking about how I looked with a clean nogging never crossed my mind for about 20 weeks.
-
I've liked it on others too, so my adjustment has just been more catching myself in a mirror and remembering (happily) what it looks like.
-
took me the better part of 1 yr. For quite a bit of time, I was in shock. Honest.
-
it hasnt even been a week, and im not ajusted, but no, i didnt expect it to be instant!
-
I cant remember if I posted here' For me, it was instant. My only question was why I didnt lather up sooner becuase I always wanted to get rid of my clipper shave anyway.

I thought something was odd about your picture....that is actually your ass on your shoulders LOL...just kidding bro! LOL
-
Lemme put my hardhat on, just in case :*))
-
I don't have much of a choice anymore after 14 laser treatments. LOL
-
After 2 weeks of being at school/work no one said anything about it. I got used to myself in the mirror about 2 weeks as well. But you'll have to allow a longer time for bumping into people around town and stuff.
There's always. "Why'd you do that man?" Or "That looks so awesome!"
I give a different answer each time. Usually something about not wanting to cover up my beautful skull with hair. One jackass I know from back in the day called me "just eyebrows" for awhile. He kept on telling me to grow it back, but that just let me know that he didn't realize the reason I did it in the first place.
-
Honestly,,, as soon as I shaved it I loved it,, am I "used" No but in a good way. I have fought with super thick hair all my life, it's not all it's cracked up to be. I go from no hat, to hard hat, to no hat,, looks ugly put a hat on blah blah blah. Now with it sly,, Piece of cake, looks the same no matter what it goes through. I wear a skull cap under the hard hat to lessen the marks from the suspension of the hard hat.

im still not competely used to it. i shaved in mid august and i still find myself stopping and looking everytime i walk past a miror lol.
-
it took me as long to get used to it as it did to shave it O0
-
I don't think it'll take too long for me to get used to it, though I can't stop rubbing my head or looking in the mirror at the moment. It's been so long since I've looked in a mirror and been happy with what I saw, though I'll have some trouble accepting that the guy looking back at me is actually me.
I look tougher than I feel. I honestly had given up on feeling attractive or being desirable and haven't dated in a couple years. It will take some time to overcome these confidence issues, but this is one hell of a support group for all that O0
... just the thought of a woman rubbing my head makes me all giddy inside :@`

Dude..you'll have no lady problems brutha..
you look a lot like Lex Luther (Michael Rosenbalm) from Smallville..
I think he still gets chicks with a shaved head! ;)
-
the thing that gets me still, (and i originated this post 5-6 months ago :) ) is that i'm 24 and i can't grow much hair on my head OR my face! some of you dudes look bad ass with goats or beards and the shaved head. if i could actually grow a nice thick goat, i think i would have gotten used to the sly look alot sooner. so i'm screwed either way! haha. i also dig the glasses with shaved head look, but my vision is 20/20
-
The glasses can look cool with the sly dome but you should be thankful for your good vision. Both glasses and contacts are a hassle, another thing to buy and another thing to break.
I want to get lasics at some point in the future.

don't worry about the facial hair issues...you'll probably grow out of it. I didn't need to shave daily until I was 25 and couldn't grow a decent beard until I was around 35...
these days, hair grows in all kinds of interesting places...LOL.

I wouldn't have guessed you were 35 JJ

GREAT (old) thread. O0

Took me a little while like all the others, but once I really started getting the technique down and got some sun on my head so it wasn't so white, I couldn't go back. I tried once just for the hell of it and I just couldn't bear it after a week.
SLY TIL I DIE!
-
One thing I recall is during first several weeks after I started shaving daily, I would be at work and my head would itch. I'd reach to scratch expecting the usual bristle of the sides of my flat top and stubble on landing strip, and all that was there was that smoooooth feeling of a freshly shaved bald head! lol
-
One day.
I think I had been ready for a while. In some other posts I've written that one day I had hair down to my shoulder blades and the very next day I had shaved it smooth. I had been watching a show called "The Shield" with Michael Chikliss and his dome had me kinda psyched up to do the deed. But I had some little pushes prior to scraping the dome so when I made the decision it was "just do it".
-
At day 10.
I am still not 100% used to it but I am WAY more comfortable than I was the first few days.
The "weird" factor seems to be gone.
Plus after 10 days I am getting pretty good at the act of head shaving.
Eric
-
Sounds like it's going well Eric, and it only gets better. That's why we suggest the unwritten rule of thirty days.
You will get more and more comfortable with your new smooth dome, and much more proficient at shaving it.
Keep up the good work. O0
-
My first sly experiment was a 30-day test and I never got used to it. One of the reasons I grew my hair back.
This time around has been easier so far, because I knew what to expect. I like both the shape of my head and the feel of it, but the dark shadow still annoys the crap out of me. Shadows on shaven heads and faces have always suggested neglect, at least in my subconscious.
-
I have been Sly for just about 3 months now and I am still not 100% used to it, I will walk by a window or something and see myself and have to go back and look. But the funny thing is is that I cant picture myself with hair either, lol.
-
Still pretty new to the sly look at a week and a half, but I'm loving it. Was great that I had one coworker who immediately told me she loves a shaved head, then said she wished her husband had the guts to do it.
Am I used to it.. nope, even tho I used to get my head buzzed with a 1 every 2 weeks. Getting into the routine for shaving the dome every morning, I actually look forward to it. Still find myself rubbing and touching my dome, and checking it in the mirror. Glad to hear I'm not the only one doing this. ;D
-
I took me about 2 weeks to adjust to it. I was embarrassed that everybody would make fun of me with the bald jokes and crap like that but in reality they envy all of us because we look great with a shavedhead
