Title: charcoal or propane...
Post by: warhawk on May 15, 2008, 09:25:56 PM
hello fellow chrome domes:  i posted this same topic last summer and i just wanted 2 recycle it because we had a good discussion on this subject.  i'll start:  i prefer and only grill with charcoal.  i know it's messy but U can't beat the taste of something cooked with charcoal.  so... how 'bout U?  what's your preference?  charcoal?   or propane?  what's your story?

I prefer charcoal.  I have a large charcoal kettle grill that I cook on a lot.  Even in winter.  It's about 6 yrs old and I love it.  I also have a five burner, stainless steel outdoor kitchen that I use more like an oven.  It comes in handy during holidays when the oven in the house is full of turkey or other large birds.
I take the mac and cheese and other stuff outside and cook them in it.

For hamburgers, steaks and chicken - nothing beats a charcoal grill for me!

Charcoal is pretty easy

1 - Stack it up
2 - Light the bottom
3 - Sit back and watch the fire while enjoying some ice cold beer!

or at my house - jump back in the pool with your ice cold beer

All charcoal here..... natural wood charcoal, not those little briquettes! Natural wood charcoal, started in a smokestack using NO lighter fluid.

Charcoal rocks!!  And I only use the hardwood lump charcoal now... burns hotter and is very easy to light with the smokestack!

I've got 40 pounds of it in my kitchen right now for smoking ribs tomorrow!!

Always fueled my grill with charcoal.
Can't throw in mesquite wood chips with propane.

Nothing beats the taste of a charcoal grilled beef burger.
My mouth is watering just thinking about it.  :@`

Actually, you can... get a smoker box from a grill store or big box (like Lowes or Home Depot).  Soak the chips as normal and then put them in the box on the grill off to the side.  They'll start smoking after a few minutes and you'll be good to go...

Here's a link, however you can get them is stainless steel as well:

Charcoal by choice, & I light w/ a "chimney" so it doesn't taste like oil field leftovers.  I've also used wood chunks as well as the "wood" charcoal.   Inside, we've got a gas grill, & it's great to avoid "fried" meats and fish--no oil.  Outside, I prefer closed, smoked, cooking, but we also do straight up grilling.

Ii use a propane weber grill and it is amazing. Heat control like an oven. Cooks everything to perfection.

I use a weber kettle style charcoal grill with mesquite or hickory chips for things like ribs, turkeys, large roasts etc.

but when it comes to chicken, shrimp, and various steaks etc. I use propane.

"Taste the meat not the heat"

Charcoal all the way!  The wifey and I bought a house last summer.  We did not have alot of  $$$ left after the purchase...not enough for a decent gas grill anyway.  We went out and bought a nice charcoal kettle gill, some briquettes, and some lighter fluid.  We had our first BBQ last summer for under $100.00.  It's been used about 30-40 times since then.

Only charcoal will do. Otherwise you may as well just cook inside.

At the risk of coming off like an obnoxious A-hole, I absolutely MUST chime in on this topic.

Barbeque  is a religion and I am a disciple of charcoal.   Hardwood, natural charcoal.   And wood.   If you want to "cook"   i.e. grill anything, use charcoal and a liberal amount of hickory or mesquite wood chips/chunks.   If you want to go to the mountain top and witness the very face of God, use a combination of oak and apple, or another fruitwood to SMOKE your meat.    When you put homemade dry rub on a pork shoulder (I have my own proprietary blend) and let it marinate overnight---and then spend the next 7-10 hours lovingly tending to a wood fire that is producing a cooking temperature of roughly 225-250 degrees, you yield a product that will make a blind man see again.    As you tear into that crispy crust and witness the pink "smoke ring" on that pork, you wouldn't trade the experience for all the propane in the world.

Don't get me wrong--propane grilling is fine for the experience alone.  It's very convenient and relatively clean, but it is exactly like having a gas range outside.   If you want to experience meat the way God himself intended--use charcoal, or better yet, smoke it.

Amen.

You may all now go in peace.
