Title: any 20 somethings sly?
Post by: HoodooMan on May 15, 2008, 04:58:51 PM
hi all,
i'm 23, been thinking of shaving my head for about 2 years because of a receeding hairline and severe thinning. i've finally done it about a week ago. i'm relieved, but i know everyone else is shocked! the shock factor is hard to get over. anyway, i was wondering if anyone else was going bald in their 20's on here and shaved?

I'm bald by choice, and in my 20's.

Embrace the thinning - it's just your inner self wanting more outer expression and style - with less work shaving! j/k

Welcome to the boards - I'm sure you will find MANY who have (or I guess I should say had) the same experience as you.

You'll be glad you found this site - unlike anywhere on the net!

Well not exactly 20 here, just about twice your age, but...

I'll tell ya there are about what, 10-15 20 yrs and younger guys here and probably a lot more that are considered "20 something" ...

Hopefully they'll post here and tell you their story..

hang out here a while and you'll see that "balding" may seem like the end of your life, but "Bald" is the start of a new, better life!!! O0

24 here bro.....I've been thinnin since prolly late 22/23 and finally decided to shave it off earlier this year.....I have to say, I fit the sly sexy black dude stereotype quite well....lol.  Honeslty bro, at first, it's a HUGE jump.  But you have to understand WHY.  There is so much societal conditioning around is that it's amazing.  I mean, little things implied thru magazine, television, radio, talk shows, everywhere in life, constantly beamed into your head (at times without your observation of them) and stated as fact.  One of them is that somehow bald guys aren't hot and aren't attractive to women.......Puhleeezzzzz.......That is unequivocally bullshit.  Get sly and let it become part of you and you'll soon reach a point where you are ashamed that you ever had so much vanity as to consider that your hair was a necessity for life.  Later bro.

23 here.  I also had MPB that started early, I used to worry about it so much.  Now I love the new look and never worry about it.

Good for you for shaving it all off mate. Not a lot people your age would have the balls to do it.

I started in my 20's and wish I would have done it earlier.  I think you'll be amazed at how much of a non-event it will be for others in your life.

... wish I would have done it earlier.

If there's one recurring theme on this forum, it's that one.  We all wish we'd done it sooner.  I can understand wanting to hold onto your hair while you can.  I felt the same way.  But now when I look back at old photos, I waited a little too long, even though I didn't think so at the time.  Now I really think that its probably best to shave as soon as possible, instead of waiting for most of it to go on its own.  It saves a lot of stress in the long run.

Older than you guys here. If I had to do it over again, and shaving was acceptable (not so in the late 70's); I'd have gotten rid of my hair (laser) by the time I was say 25.

I was a 20-something bald guy a few years back. I started shaving my head at about 23 years old, wouldn't change a thing and I am glad I didnt fall into any of the "solutions" that the greedy grift the balding man into.

If your bald your bald, nothing is going to bring it back, and arranging those last hairs on top in whatever crazy configuration you can think of isnt hiding anything or fooling anyone.

I'm 26 and started shaving the first of this year.  You get the shock factor going at the beginning but it soon fades.

I shaved because I've been thinning on top since 20-ish.  I should have shaved it 2 years ago, but didn't.

It's been great not having anymore hair on the keyboard of my laptop or on my pillow etc.

Plus the bald head is so comfortable.  I can't stand letting it go more than a day without shaving it.

O0 hey, ive been receeding since the age of 19, ill be 23 next month, so i decided to go for it, and go bald. was really receeding before this, and im still getting used to the look, my fiancee loves it, i like it, but still a bit uncertain
wish i knew a way in which to get rid of the white outline on the top of my head, where my hair was, its annoying, i have no idea how to get a bald, truly skin like feel at all, my head feels like you could strike a match on it, lol
ive shaved it a few times now, and still stubbly, does anyone know how to do this? thanks

Are you shaving against the grain?  If not, try that.  Also, what razor and cream/gel are you using?

Ha!  You are all amature chrome domes.  I started losing mine when I was 16.  Nasty combover at 18. Shaving it all off since 19.  I'm 24 now and have finally gotten over all the self-esteem issues with being bald.

I dont mean to beat a dead horse here but the truth is that girls really dont care as long as your confident, in decent shape, and tan.  I'm glad I've already gotten over the whole "I want my hair back" phase now as opposed to later in life.  Keep those razors sharp.

So, here's the deal.
I was all gung-ho to shave my head when it got bad enough (I still have hair) but now that it's becoming noticeable, i'm afraid to shave it. Me going bald doesn't bother me, i'm just afraid to actually go ahead and shave it.

By the end of summer I will do it, but being in university with a tight nit group of friends, I am afraid that they will think of me differently.
I have read everything you guys have said, but i'm still nervous to do it.
I just feel like no one knows that I am actually balding right now, and if I shave it, people will all of a sudden be aware that I am balding and that makes me nervous.

But it'll be worth it, i'm sure.

Hi, North.

I know exactly how you feel.  I'll bet your friends won't think of  you differently.  Everybody has that fear, and I have yet to hear of any cases where it's actually turned out to be true.  99% of the time, one of two things will happen: (1) you'll get barely any feedback at all, or (2) you'll get a lot of positive feedback.

Your last sentence sums it up perfectly:  it is worth it.  It's like standing at the edge of a very cold swmming pool on a steaming hot day.  You're hesitant to take the leap, but you know you'll feel a lot better once you do.  Take that leap, North, and don't let it go too long.  The relief is instant and it's not worth the anxiety you put yourself through by putting it off.

If you need some encouragement, visit the Before & After gallery on this site.  You'll be hard pressed to find anyone there who didn't look better with a shaved head.

Where do I find this before and after gallery?

And thank you. I need to suck it up and get over it. I just really hope it isn't a big deal.
I am glad for one thing, though. I have thin hair (not just the top, all of my hair is relatively thin), and i'm thinking that the shadow should be very subtle.

It's just a matter of time, i'll get the balls to just do it and forget what anyone thinks of me.

Hey North, glad you joined up on the site. Welcome!

I know how you feel. Back when I first shaved my head, the reaction of those I know was the first thing that made me hesitate. But you know what, your friends aren't your friends because of your hair, they're friends with you because of your personality and because of who you are. That's what I've learned. Can you really see them saying, "Oh man, North shaved his head, I don't think I want to be associated with him..." I'm not mocking you here, like I said, I felt the same way you did. You might get some remarks and "baldy" comments, but no worries bro, you're friends will still love you and they're just giving you s*** like all guys typically do.

And in the end, just think about what looks worse, a guy with a shaved head, or someone trying to hide their baldness with combed over hair or specially styled hair. I'm not sure how your specific situation is, but as soon as I got to the point where I found myself moving hair around "hide" the fact that I was thinning, I knew it was time to take it sly. Trust me, if you're hair is hiding your baldness, chances are other people have already noticed.

And if its love from the ladies that you're concerned about, nothing screams confidence more than a shaved head. 9 times out of 10 it even adds an "edge" to your look, which most girls love.

The only regret i have is not doing it sooner!!!! Seriously it was nerving the first time with the razor in your hand and looking in the mirror, but, once you've done it you wont stop and ive never had any negative feedback.

ps. brace yourself - ladies love it; i didnt do too bad before going sly, but now its hetic lol!!

I started shaving in 1983 when I was 23.  I was on active duty(Army) at the time and always had either a horeshoe flat or would just have the barber peel me with the clippers(no guard) every week.  I liked it clean and always wanted to be a completely bald man so finally just did it.  Only regret is that I waited that long.

hi north,

i had the same reservations about shaving my head at college. i actually waited until after graduation before making the change because i was worried about reactions from friends/family. i knew it was silly at the time but i sill couldn't make myself do it. of course after i did it, some people gave me a hard time when they first saw me, but it was just for fun. all the sincere comments i've gotten have been positive. looking back, i wish i had done it much sooner. i was one of the last people to realize that i was going bald... not the other way around. whether people say anything or not, they know. when i look at pictures of myself from the last few years, i'm almost embarrassed i waited so long.

everyone has different physical and personality traits. people will respect you most for being self aware. stop hiding your baldness. go shave your head and start feeling comfortable with your appearance so you can focus on other things.
