Mel, I am really bad about pushing the limits on "Yellow Lights". I hate stopping at lights and will do almost anything to avoid it. It's getting alot more dangerous, at least in my area, there are alot more intersections that are monitored with cameras that take pic of those who choose to run the light. :popo

I'd like to say I safely push the limits of the yellow light.
-
Ooooh, tough one...
If I am closer to the light when it turns yellow - then I go like hell to avoid sitting at a red...
If I am further away - and more importantly if I am on my Harley - I will just break and twiddle my thumbs at the light...
A long time ago - and I'm not sure where this came from so please don't quote me, but I heard that running a yellow will only save you 45 seconds compared to stopping..
I have no idea how valid that is - but if it is valid - waiting at a red light is the most boring mind waisting 45 seconds known to man... LOL.

Although I dont do this anymore but it has kinda stuck with me. When I was in highschool we use to ride aroudn the "cruise" strip. When we would go thru a traffic light and it was yellow...well if the light change to red just as we were passing under it...then you would tap the roof of the car and that would mean you were going to get laid that night. I know silly, right? lol..but it was fun. I knew that none of us were going to get laid on any of those nights because it was always us guys in the car. lol
Timmay...
what do I do today? I will try to get thru the light before it changes red. I know one day...and I have only done this once....because I got a ticket for it....I was about 3/4 of a block from the light when it turned yellow....and I laid on teh gas and sped thru the light just before it turned red. Well I have learned to look and see what cars are waiting for their light to turn Green.....cause that particular day...it was a city cop waiting...didnt take him long to make a left turn right behind me...lol

The answer depends in part to where and when you are driving. In some states there are more aggressive drivers, especially in the mornings, who are trying to beat feet to work. If you slow down on a yellow, you're begging to get rear-ended (OUCH!)
Here on the edge of the Rockies, the state has about a 2 second delay between yellow and red. Most folks expect you to run the yellow. #**p
Also, if you're in the intersection on a yellow and it turns red, you are legal to go through the intersection without fear of a ticket. :/O
We also have a number of people who either have not concept of the yellow light time/space continuum, or are in a hurry and don't care. These people can be seen running a red, or in some cases, a VERY red light. $d^vC Because of these people, I make sure I look both ways for movement prior to going into the intersection (especially on my bike). ;)
The bike has the added problem of not being seen from behind. So, for the soccer mom who is in the Suburban, talking on the cell phone, I installed an aftermarket high intensity LED taillight / brake light. It is probably 3X brighter than the standard present day factory tail light and even brighter than my old incandescent bulb setup. (**!
On top of all this, I follow the phrase "Via Con Dios" which loosely translates to "walk with God". O0

If you are within 50 feet of the light when the Yellow light comes on and you are travelling at the legal speed limit you are legally allowed to continue through the light.
-
We have a bunch of cameras now that bust people for running a red light, meaning if you are still in the intersection when it turns red, you're BUSTED! That being said, it's a judgement call at the time the light turns yellow.

Yes the dreaded Red-light camera. They are on pretty much every major intersection in Sydney. The generate millions in revenue for the government. There are also speed cameras that do the same thing here.

They've just installed those suckers in New Orleans and in Jefferson Parish--just to the West. They are money makers alright. There's a bill in the legislature to stop the payment to the supplier of the equipment based upon violations--maybe if it passes the trend will go away.

Set my beer in the cup holder and floor it. O0
j/k
Seriously, like Tyler, we're getting our fair share of cameras at major intersections in our town (must be a California thing...gotta increase revenues to pay for all the social programs we have :Xo!). Actually, I'll lean towards conservative and likely slow down as I approach a yellow light. Since I've become a parent, I've actually become a pretty cautious driver...much moreso than when I was a single dude.
-
There's too much aggression on the roads... SLOW DOWN before you end up t-boned by another aggressive driver jumping on the green light as you claim "but I entered the intersection on a yellow"! :popo O0
-
Yellow means prepare to stop.
-
Yeah, right. I learned that one in driver's ed too! O0
Now, how many of you believe and do that...? 8)
-
It all depends on how close I am to the intersection.
If I am close, I gun it, if I can see the light turn yellow and I am more than a couple hundred feet away, I just stop.
I see no reason to risk my life (and others) to save 3 mins.
-
Yellow means hurry up and get your ass thru..the light is about to change to red...and Red means stop.
Seriously though, I am a careful driver, but I have been known on occassion to do just that....but I live in a small town....now if it was a light at a 6 lane interesection...I am cautious and stop.
-
I used to think I was a careful driver `Dr!v, until I noticed my wife was cringing when I was driving. g@@4 She told me that I was a bad driver. :o
(Now, no one else has ever said that to me, whether out of fear or fear of retribution, I don't know!) b@n*
I guess I'm glad that other people drive defensively too. I used to slow down for yellow lights, until my wife said :Xo! I should continue through them or I might get hit from behind. :x! So I am a changed driver now, living on the edge of the yellow $d^vC
