Title: WHAT's your next house project?
Post by: warhawk on May 06, 2008, 05:49:37 PM
hello fellow chrome domes:  i remember timmy talking about his vinyl siding project 4 his house.  i was wondering what's your next project 4 your home?  i'll start:  i just got my carpeting cleaned and shampooed.  i'll probably purchase a new ceiling light w/ fan   4 the living room.

so... how 'bout U?  what's your next project?  if U  R  in the middle of your project...then what is it?  what's your story?

Once the cats go to the big litter box in the sky  O0, recarpet the whole house.  >:(
In no particular order,
1. ceiling fan replacement in family room & master bedroom
2. refinish front door & bench in the backyard
3. Take a machete to the hill in the backyard
4. Repaint base boards in the house.
5. Drink heavily.

A person has GOT to know his limitations.  8)
My wife wanted a tile kitchen floor, so I put one in.  I did lots of research, talked with buddies who had done floors or were doing floors, and I mapped out my project (scope, schedule, budget).  I also had some flex to work with; a borrowed tile saw with no time limit, and work arounds until the floor was done (eat out!).  What I thought would take 4 to 5 days, took 3 WEEKS! :D :D :D :/O
When I was done, my wife wanted to tile the bathroom.  I found a friend who was a professional tile man, and paid the money for HIM to do the job!  Like I said, a person has got to know his limitations. O0
My next job; have someone else replace some windows! :D

When my check gets here I have to finish my Kitchen,
I had a friend of mine tell me she is never surprised if a wall has been tore down or some kinda construction is going on when she visits... and she has been visiting me on and off for 10 years!!

Guess I like to keep changin crap, or maybe I just like doing construction work.... Since I have no wife it could be the fact that if I want to take a wall out, no one can complain!!

I have two french doors with glass centers sitting in the garage that I need to stain and put up in the den.  Then the next big project in to have the carpeting taken out and wood floors put in.  Finally I would like to get somebody to install ceramic tile in the entry way.

I'm having a guy come and put lattice around the bottom of my deck this week.  He's also coming back to finish a project I started in one of our upstairs baths.  I primed it all to be painted and it's been sitting for 3 months.  He's coming to put up wainscoating the first week in June and finish it for me.  To me it's worth the extra $$ to have someone else do it.

Appreciate the offer but the cost of gas he would have to add to the bill to get up here would make the job prohibitive.  (We're now up to $3.89 a gal)

Then the next big project in to have the carpeting taken out and wood floors put in.

Paul, I put laminate flooring in my house. I found it was cheaper from Sams Club which had the flooring with the foam backing glued to it. It only required 6mm plastic between the laminate and my cement floor, so I found the poly we use under our tarps on lumber loads quite handy (and cheap) for that. Plus, once spread out it is about 25' wide.

Champ just curious as to how much you spent per sq ft on your laminate.  We have all kinds of people around here that think they can go to Lowe's or Sam's Club and get it cheaper.  Right now I have laminate instock in 5 different colors made by Shaw with a 25 year warranty w/o the foam backing for only $1.19 square foot.  Its an 8 mil product and very nice looking with register embossing.  For those who dont know what registered embossing is....it is tht you can feel the graining where the graining should be.  Just as if you were actually touching a real board.
Getting the foam on the back adds no value or quality to the floor.  Most people say well yeah but its easier to install...????  Really?  because if you buy the foam that goes under it by the roll....which comes 100 sq ft per roll for only $12.99, all you do is roll it out ...tack it down in a few places to keep it from moving and then lay your laminate down.

Champ, appreciate the input.  I put laminate in the house I had before though and was not satisfied with it at all.  That's why I am choosing to go with the real wood floor this time around.  Also helps to increase value of the house as I understand it.

We're getting estimates now on rebuilding our 25 yr+ deck.  The nails and coming up and the planks are all warped.  It's just not safe anymore.  The second thing is hopefully we are going to convert our pool over to a saltwater system.  It'll depend on how much the deck costs.
