Title: New guy here, help me out! EDIT: I DID IT!
Post by: ZDB2k on May 05, 2008, 08:20:10 PM
Awesome forum, glad to be here! I'm 25 y/o, hair started thinning around 22, didn't get "bad" until about 24. I've been wearing a piece for a couple months now with awesome results. Although I'm not liking the weekly maintenence. I ride motorcycles in the summer - so heat + helmet + hair piece isn't going to be fun. I've decided I'm not going to let hair run my life  :*)).

So last week, I decided to use Photoshop (I'm a Graphic Designer) and make myself bald to see what I'd look like. I dont think I look too bad! Anyway, I'm looking to shave it all off in the near future, just need a little push! Let me know what you guys think.

Here are a few pics:

This is fake... Bald:

Welcome, ZDB2K.  Glad you found us and decided to join in.  I thing the bald (SLY) look is 100% better.  Plus I can guarantee that you'll also feel 100% better about yourself.  Nothing to hide anymore.  Give it a shot.  You look good and alot more of a "tougher" look.

Best of luck

What I want to know bro is......What the hell you waiting for?  I think you woudl look like a natural.  I would just say do it.   I guarentee you that once you do it you will finally feel free from all the worries of losing your hair.  I see nothing...absolutely nothing wrong with you shaving ya noggin.  If you do it though...you have to adhere to the 30 day rule.  Try it for 30 days, if you dotn like it, grow it back.  I will say by the end of week one..you will be addicted.  Hope you still hang around even if you dotn decide right now to shave it.  Loads of info on here bro, and by the way...Glad you found us.  I will tell ya, I see you shaving it within a week...mark my word ! LOL

hey man.. i can see why you think you feel better with the rug. being young an bald is a difficult thing. however, with those pictures you posted.... you look almost a thousand times better with the "photoshop shave" than with that piece ... seriously! you look sooooo badass and manly without hair than that piece will ever offer. plus if you shave it, it's YOUR look... not some fake crap.

seriously man... upgrade on the shaved look, no doubt.

Welcome ZDB2k!!!  Liberate yourself and go for the shave.  I think you will look great.  Just imagine the years of maintenance and cost with your rug.  Calculate the savings with compound interest and see what you get.  I bet it will shock you.

Yup, do it. Give it the 30 day trial and I bet you'll lose track of the days after a week. Like Paul said, you were born to wear the SLY look.

Here are several reasons for shaving:

-ease of maintenance
-it's cooler and I sweat like a....
-it looks tough and intimidating
-nothing for someone to grab in a fight
-high CDI (Chicks Dig It) factor

Hey, I'm brand new to the shaved head thing too.... (it's only been about a week now)

I'm 27 years old, I work in the mortgage field, and I am not thinning - at all..

I have made the choice to be bald - and so far - I LOVE IT!

The feeback from my employees, the feeback from this site, my family, and even strangers is great!

If you decide to take the razor to it - let us all see!!!

I understand how you feel now... it's difficult to take the first step, but once
everybody sees your new look the problems are over...

A way to make it easier for you is to tell everybody that you are going to
try the bald look: this way it won't be a shock, instead it will be expected
so you won't have the typical "Oh my God!" and "what have you done??"
because they already know you are going to do it!.
Actually people will encourage you cause they will get curious!

Good luck and let us know how things will go!  O0

It's funny you mention that because I've already taken those measures. I started a new job about two months ago, and I told a few people that "I shave it all off in the summer time". The way I look at it, I'm halfway shaven anyway (since I shave the top for the hair piece). It's just the sides and back that I need to take care of. I'm supposed to do my weekly "re apply" for my hair piece tonight, this includes removing the piece and shaving the top portion of my dome. We'll see if I have the balls to shave it all off! I want to do it but I'm so nervous.  :o

If you're nervous, head to a traditional barbershop (not a salon) and tell the guy you want it taken down as tight as he can get it. Once you get home, you can (and probably will) finish it off with your Mach 3. Worked for me after some great advice from the guys on this site. Good luck!

Anyone want to buy a stock pile of hair pieces?  :*)) :*)) :*)) :*)) :*)) :*))

I buzzed it with no guard. Should I take the razor to it or leave it as is? You can see my thinning up front, although I still have a decent ammount of hair left...

I owe you guys! I feel like a real person again.

WOOT!

Looking MUCH better!!!

Just my opinion....  I cut mine like you did yours and left it that way for a week to get a little bit of sun to my dome. Once I had a little bit of a tan - I went to the skin.

From my personal experience - I will be sly from here out.

I'm bald by choice (BBC) and will not be going back to hari with all of the feedback that I've received in the real world!

Great start - keep us posted!

Z,
Welcome to the land of Slydom!   8)
As great as it looks, you will appreciate it more as you find that others like it too, and then you will be REALLY sly!  O0
Also, there is a thread somewhere here, done by one of our sly guys, about using Jergens Natural Glow to get a sunless tan in about 3 days!  The photos included on the thread, show that it does work, and you don't need to be out in the sun to get  darker skin and burning up your scalp, or setting yourself up for skin cancer down the road.
Now, on to the benefits of Slydom!  Well done, dude! O0

ZDB2K- congrats "MAN"
You have stepped over at a young age and have just saved yourself years of loathing and getting a complex about your appearance. Trust me, I know from experience!
Don't be too eager about sunning it, the white will fade natuarly with just limited exposure, but you need to sunscreen it if your going to spend longer than 15, 20 minutes in direct sunlight.
I gotta say it looks great for a first shave...smooth. Be sure to check some of the techniques in the forum and things available to prevent razor burn and keep it smooth.
Way to go  O0

ZD,you look much better sly. Congragulations. The hairpiece didn't really suit you as it took away from your looks. Plus I could tell from the sides where the hairpiece ended and your own hair began. I used to wear a piece myself and the older I get the worse it looks on me.I keep my own hair buzzed close and look more manly and better looking. You're lucky that sly is the style now. When I was young in the 80s it wasn't, so I wore a piece just to fit in with the other guys with full mops of hair. At 51 this is a more natural look. But you look great sly and with the buzz. Why don't you bring the piece back to the people you bought it from and tell them to wipe their ass with it.LOL.

Way to go  O0

... what he said.  Dude, it really does look good.  You can now go live your life to the fullest.  The burden has been lifted.  Keep us posted on how things go, and keep strong with your decision.  You will be glad you did.

PS.... the first picture reminds me of (showing my age)... Matthew Modine - Vision Quest! Not that he was Bald, but maybe way short hair in Full Metal Jacket - Private Joker.

You guys are awesome. I'll be sticking around here for sure!

I'm getting used to it now and I'm very happy I went through with it. Reactions from people have been all good. Honestly people don't really think its a big deal. I'm trying to get a tan on the top of my dome so I picked up some mild sunless tanner today, I also hit the tan booth at the gym yesterday. I definetly love not having to worry about fixing my hair after a motorcycle ride. One thing that's bugging me is that my head feels a little irritated, although you can't tell from looking at it. Hopefully that will go away after a few weeks of shaving it... right?  8)

Thanks again everyone for all the support!

And to any of you fencers - listen to these guys... just go for it, you will be happy with the results.

You rock!

I got a little irritation for the first week or so - and have found that witchhazel helps tremendously!

I got a GIANT bottle of it at walgreens for 7.99 - it's a massive massive bottle. I don't think I will ever run out!!! ha.

Also - the VDH (van der hagen) soap with aloe vera (about 2bucks at walgreens) is a huge improvement over the shaving cream I was using.

All of the information I have obtained - came from this forum!

Glad to hear you are happy with your choice - EVERYONE here knew you would be!

I'm late on this, but welcome ZDB!
I gotta tell you bro, it looks great, glad to see you took all the bro's advice.
It is quite liberating, isn't it?  I bet you feel better than ever. That's "slydom".

And no worries with the helmet anymore.
I gotta say though bro, why would you want to put a helmet on over a lousy fake hair helmet at all??, that had to feel horrible.

Keep it smooth bro, it looks really slick.      O0
