Title: shaving off the hairpiece?
Post by: marty on May 01, 2008, 01:33:10 PM
I have been wearing a hairpiece for about 14 years.  I have seriously been thinking about taking if off and shaving my head.  I am fearful though about this change and how people will react, especially those who have always known me with hair?  I am wondering if any one else has been in this situation and what it was like for them?  Any advice?

marty, welcome to Sly Bald Guys!  There are plenty of guys here that can relate to your situation in one way or another.  Know that almost all people have non-reactions or positive reactions.

Hello Marty,
We all ask ourselves the same question over and over.
I did more than a year ago... I never had a hairpiece but had serious MPB.
Well, to cut a long story short : I buzzed what was left and a week later took a vacation and shaved it all off. Came here, ask for comments; got positive ones; dared to get out of home; felt fresh air on my head and a few days later, returned to work : no big deal... (Big stress on first day though.)

For me, this very little change (it's just hair after all) changed many things. (It is difficult though to determine if this is a cause or a consequence.)

As far as bad reactions are concerned, the most remarkable thing I remember is their absence ! If you like yourself better, people will feel it and will react accordingly.

Welcome to the club!

Welcome Marty!!!!  I think you'll find that most of us had some fear of how other would respond.  In hindsight, it wasn't a big deal.  Most responses were positive (and the others I didn't care about).  The #1 piece of advice is to try it for two weeks.  You'll never go back.

BTW Marty , welcome!

You know what though, I think the people you care about might already know and those that don't think bald is bald whether you MPB or not...

say you were thinning and you just wanted a change!

In a week they'll forget with hair you AND the piece! ;)

Marty,I wore a hairpiece for 25 years and within the last 2 years I got brave, got a buzz cut and I like it. But for me it's a slow process as there are still a few family members who have never seen me without the piece and I'm a little reluctant to go in front of them without it. I think my main fear is going in front of them when they're in a group. If I saw them one here and one there I think I'd be a lot calmer.I will eventually though.I say take baby steps.Eventually you'll get there. So far everyone who's seen it likes it. But there will always be people who have different opinions.People are a pain in the ass that way.But I'd say go for it,at your own pace that is.
