Hello fellow chrome domes...Just wondering...Are any of you fond of extremley spicy and fiery food? How about a fondness for Habaneros or Jalapenos?
Me well I love the stuff...I mean really love it...My favorite is the fiery Habanero...I will usually buy a dozen every few weeks and chop them up and eat them with any meal that I have. I find the hotter the better. I've eaten them for so long that I actually get a nice buzz after I eat them.
I like the taste of Jalapenos but I dont find them hot enough for me. However with the red birds eye chillies that are common in a lot of Asian cooking, those little things will knock you on your ass. O0
I have just purchased 10 Naga Jolokia seeds off Ebay recently. Naga chillies are the hottest chillies in the world. Hot peppers are measured with Scoville units(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scoville_scale).
The common Bell Pepper has a Scoville rating of 0.
Cayenne Peppers rate 30,000 SU.
Jalapenos are about 8,000
The Serrano Pepper rates at 23,000
My favorite the Habanero chili rates in at 350,000 SU
But the big daddy Naga Jolokia is in at over 1 Million SU's!!

I devour hot and spicy food. So much so that I grow my own so that I have a years supply on hand at all times. I grow Hungarian Hot Peppers, Sport Chilis, Serranos and Jalapenos. I do a great deal of Asian cooking, Vietnamese, Thai, and Indian so the peppers get put to good use.
-
I'm in Texas -- jalapenos are a tasty fruit snack!
I love spicy foods, but only to the point where the flavor starts to get overpowered by the heat. Flavor first, heat second.
-
It's Louisiana, what more can I say :@`it spicy, dancing on the tongue--life, joie, happy! JDog's report on Naga Jolokia sounds interesting--what "national" cuisine are they used in, Thai, etc.
-
jdog: i absolutely luv spicy peppers & all but these past couple of years those spicy, hot peppers DON'T like me. unfortunatley... i have acid reflux & i can pretty much eat anything except 4 extremely spicy peppers/foods. however... i will eat it on occasion but "pay" 4 it later. >:(

saintc, Naga Jolokia chilies are native to Northeast India...they are used in some Indian curries, especially Phaal. Many Indian restaurants will not display this on their menus, you have to request it.
I will post a review soon.

I LOVE spicy hot food! The hotter the better...... jalapenos are like candy to me. Habaneros have a nice hot bite but taste like dirt to me. I like scotch bonnet peppers nice zing and good taste.
I LOVE Indian food Jdog!!!!

Great information, I have a friend who's from the New Delhi region, I'll get with him and see about this. I really like curry, Madras or hotter and Thai curries, especially the fish are great. One of my Indian style deals is to use a commercial Tandoori spice on chicken, w/ lemon, yogurt, etc., then smoke it w/ Mesquite on indirect heat for about 1 1/2 hours, Tex-Indian I guess you might say. The meat is tender, tinged w/ the red from the spice and soooo tasty. Might have to do that this weekend. My mouth is watering, might have to hit the Pho shop for lunch.

I agree with the Bear. If all you can taste is the peppers it doesn't rate IMO.
-
I love spicy food and agree most of the time, the hotter the better.
I have had instances where I have felt like food was prepared just to be overwhelmingly hot and no regard to the actual flavor was considered and that kinda bugs me... I like hot but I like it to enhance my food not dominate it or to "challenge me".
Habanero and Jalapenos peppers are definitely favorites, as well as cyanne and other flavor types peppers. I use green peppers in the jar for the juice to dribble over black eyed peas or greens.
I love hot sauces too and eat hot sauce on almost everything. I just cant get enough of the heat.
I also am a fan of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers (the band).
I have paid the price the next day... but its a small price to pay for this sadistic culinary joy.

I agree here. I use to love eating REAL hot stuff. I would douse just about all my foods with it. But then one day out of the blue I realized I wasn't really getting to enjoy the taste of the actual food I was eating. All I was tasting was "hot." So I have pretty much stopped using hot sauces all together. I will still use it now and then but in very little amounts. Just enough to give my food that "kick."
-
i am a coonass. what the hell do ya think? ha ha ha
-
Love it spicy bro!!!!
-
Not normally. But there's this spicy orange sauce at a Mexican place I go to called La Victoria. It's hot, but it's so damn good you can't stop putting it on your burrito.
-
In most parts of Mexico,if you ask for "muy muy picante" they will bring you a plate of a green habanero sauce, almost like a puree. Remember the Simpsons episode where Homer eats the insanity pepper that causes him to meet a coyote voiced by Johnny Cash?? Well that is what this stuff did to me. I cant even remember walking back to our hotel on a few occasions I was that buzzed.

MARZ my friend...... You have a little east coast Southern boy in you??? I'm surprised any west coaster know about greens and black eyed peas! Two of my favorites.....

When I was in my late twenties 3 of my friends and I formed the "Wing eaters Hall of Fame"..... that's what we officially called ourselves.
Each week we would rotate to another members' house and it was that members' job to make the wings and supply the beer. Every week the wings got hotter and hotter. We would sit by a picnic table at eat the hottest freakin' wings you can imagine. The sweat would be rolling down our faces and we would be laughing and drinking beer like crazy. We did this for an entire Spring/Summer.
I used to make my own sauce.... known as "Thermo nuclear Meltdown". The boys always had a little trouble with that sauce. :*))
We did it on Wednesday evenings and my 40 mile to trip the next morning was always "uncomfortable". :XX But man was it worth it.

Speaking of Habaneros, I like a sauce called "Pain Is Good". It is made with Habaneros and it helps me to remember that if I ain't sweatin' I ain't really eatin'! The sauce comes in a pint flask like they sell cheap vodka in and has a picture of a Jamaican guy on the label screaming his lungs out.
-
I too LOVE it spicy HOT, all I got to say is send me some of those pepers JDog O0

Living in New Mexico, we put red or green chile or jalapenos on everything.

Hey PigPen, do the green chilies that you use have more spice than the red ones?
-
It really depends on the location they are grown in. The best place in NM for chili is Hatch, bottom line. Red or green. The red is usually spicier, the green has better flavor in my opinion.

I have only been to the South once, to New Orleans. I ate there like I have never ate in my life. What a gluttonous culinary orgy that place is... and I am not even counting the drinking.
I (and the wife) are planning to go back to the south very soon to try different regions food.
I am guessin you are a fan of biscuits and gravy with chicken fried steak and grits? Or Pork Chops and hominy?...
Oh you Southerners can cook for Marz anytime!

Being of South Asian origin, spicy food is in my genes. I really dig a hot curry. We eat some sort of curry every evening so I am accustomed to hot spices. I also use hot pepper sauce for seasoning on really bland food. The sauce is of the west indian type and uses scotch bonnet peppers which is very very hot indeed. Me and the family also visit a Portuguese restaurant once a month called Nando's. I order the spiciest food they have.
-
Ok, since moving to Washington it has been really hard to find good mexican food but I have recently discovered a taco truck about 5 miles from my house. Everyone knows that if you want the real deal in Mexican you got to hit up the taco trucks, not the catering "roach coach" type of truck that sell sandwiches and stuff, the full on taco truck.
So I pick up my 8 (yes 8) Al Pator tacos and bring them home... to my delight there are 2 roasted jalepeno peppers on the plate. What a delicious item to go with my awesome tacos... hot as hades but MAN! thats some good eating right there... the roasted Jalepenos are just delicious.

My dad grows his own peppers and makes a kick ass pepper sauce

I've been watching Anthony Bourdain and recently learned of the Sichuan flower pepper, or huajiao, this is supposed to be wickedly hot. I havent been able to find any in the green grocer markets. I'm going to take a trip into Chinatown on the weekend to try to source some.
I ate 3 Thai chilli peppers raw yesterday with dinner and I got a great buzz from them. They pack a whallop for their size.
-
I like hot chillies and peppers mixed in with food lol, or those cheddar filled jalapeno poppers. I dont eat them whole. Altho a guy at my old job told me if I ate a whole chilli pepper, stem seeds and all, he would pay me 10 bucks. So I did, and became 10 dollars richer! lol.
