Post by: warhawk on April 18, 2008, 04:41:59 AM
hello fellow chrome domes:  just wondering... lately i've been seeing many children/middle school/teens walking around with those "roller skate shoes".  u know... those shoes with the small wheels located under the heel area?
anyways... what are they called?   also have U noticed many kids walking/skating around in those unque shoes in your area.  please... share your story?  do your kids have them?  do your students have them?

Think I'm a horrible person if you want but every time a kid "skates" by me with those things on I can't help myself by thinking I would love to just hold my arm out and close line the heck out of 'em.   >:D

Before anyone gets mad about what I said...I was really just joking.  I couldn't harm a fly.  But the thought is funny.   >:D

They call them 'heelies' over here.  Sometimes you nearly get run down by kids skating round corners in supermarkets etc.  Pretty dangerous: but I wouldnt mind trying them out!! :D

I just got a pair of Heelies for Christmas.  I haven't been able to use them much because of the snow.  So last week I thought I'd try them out in my driveway.  I fell, scraped up my knee pretty bad and could hear the whole neighborhood laughing in my head.  ;D  The damn things are back in the closet collecting dust.

They are banned at our local schools.  have you ever seen a kid try to walk in those things?  You cant do it...they dont bend with your foot..and i wont buy my kids any.  Really to be honest...I dont see a place around here where you would need them.  I have seen kids at walmart with them on and they are dangerous.  I just dont think they are very popular around here.  I have heard my kids and some of their friends make comments about them, they said they were for the geeks.  Another sure sign that they werent very popular....when they first came out they were like 30 bucks a pair...then about a month later you could get them for about 8 dollars on clearence...actually I dont think you can even find them around here anymore.  Very short lived..

See kids scootin' around in those things just about everywhere in the Dallas area.  Heelies have been out a couple of years, I think, and getting more noticed in malls, playground areas.  I wouldn't buy any for me or my daughter, as I don't need any extra bruises and they're not allowed in my daughter's school.  Pretty much a fad that will fizzle as far as I'm concerned.

If I had kids, I wouldn't let them wear them either...  I've heard that since those things have hit the stores, the number of concussions in kids has skyrocketed!

They are still quite popular here in OZ. You see alot of kids ,mostly boys between 8-12, using them in the shopping centres.

I think they are pretty neat myself.

Heelies, it is.  I let one of my kids buy a pair with money that was saved, but they really aren't safe.  They sell safety equipment for them... sounds nutty to buy accessories because you might hurt yourself wearing shoes.   :/O

Isn't that the best bit about toys when you're a kid?
Hands up everyone here you hurt themselves with roller skates, skateboards, bicycles, bits of rope tied to things they shouldn't have been, BB guns.........

I'm just jealous 'cos I know I'd end up in A&E getting something bolted back together.
My boys are 9 and 7 and heavily into bicycles and similar things.  The elder lad has been roller skating for while but is losing interest.
The trips that we have made to our local hospital have been as a result of injuries from household objects and falling off things.  We found out a while ago that you can safely jump from the 3rd step of a cabin bed onto a swivel chair, but if you try the same from the 4th step you fracture your wrist.  Now you know, don't try this yourself!

I think they are pretty cool  Several of my god kids have them.  They can't be any worse than the pogo balls that we used to kill ourselves on.

They have been banned at the AAA ballpark I know. I won't buy them for my kids. I says they don't need 'em.

I'm sure they'll have plenty of dangerous toys when she's ready for them.
