That's a good question.  I'll have to go back and take a look to see if I can tell.

Bald cap...totally...

felt ripped off back then...

come on...a little sufferin' for your art!

Geez, Michael Rosenbaum has shaved his head smooth for what 5-6 years now to play Lex Luther on Smallville..

Gene should have stepped up...he's MPB thinning in real life too!

The producers wanted Hackman to shave his head for the role and he refused.  That's why Lex Luthor doesn't take his wig off until the very end of the movie, because they felt it would be obvious to the audience if he wore the bald cap throughout the entire film.

After Hackman accepted the role, they said to him, "So when are you going to shave your head?" --- they just assumed that he would.  And he told them that he wasn't going to -- no way, no how.  That wouldn't happen today, but it was a different world 30 years ago.  I don't understand why he wouldn't do it.  It's not like he had great hair anyway.

Yea...just shows you as far as "hair" stigma went .....

the 70's (and early 80's) were ridiculus when it came to NEEDING to have long hair..

SHORT didn't even cut it...I feel for the MPB dudes during those times..

All the depressed balding brothers agonizing over shaving your heads in this accepting age, should be at least thankful of when they were born...

imagine being in THAT boat back then!!!!!

Today is definately the time to be bald, even by choice. I can remember as a kid in tv early 80's any shaved was a racist skinhead now it is great. I remember going to a HCM consultation. Looking back I can't believe I even thought of paying my good hard earned money to make other people happy about how I look. This is cheap and has given me so much more confidence. I don't look to bad either.
