The first sly sports star that I remember was Nate Thurmond from the (then) San Francisco Warriors. He was one of my idols when I was a kid. He played defense like Bill Russell of the Celtics, stayed back around the hoop and shut down the lane, but had better offense than Russell. Blocked a lot of shots and was an animal on the boards. He was bald as a cue ball which made him stand out back then aside from the fact that he was one of the greats in the 60s and early 70s.

Nate sat (literally) right in front of my dad's firms Warrior Season tickets in the mid-90's. I got to talk to him often during the games that I attended. He did (and still does) community work for the Golden State Warriors after his playing days ended. A true gentleman.
He now runs a barbeque restaurant in San Fransicko that is quite tasty. http://www.bignatesbarbeque.com/
Aside from Nate, Slick Watts (point guard for the Seattle Supersonics) is one that sticks in my mind.

mike: i think he was nearly sly from my readings of him and seeing highlights of him on sports documentaries as a kid. i believe he had a #1 guard.

Great call Mel! Curly Neal was very cool way back then.

First sly sports guy I really remember was Mark Murphy a defensive back with the Packers. The commentators would always explain that he was that way because he had alopecia.
