What's up my Sly Bros? I got plenty of support before when I was trying out for the fire department so I'm hoping I can count you all to say a prayer for me now. Those of you who know my background about my job situation know that I've been a stay at home dad for the past two years now. I applied to become a 911 dispatcher about 6 months ago and I received a call from them about a week ago to start the hiring process. I took a tour of the facility and interviewed with them. I took four different tests and did well on all of them. Typing, common sense scenarios, etc...They liked me a lot. Well, of course because I just oozed of slyness. O:O ;D They said they would get back to me within the next week or so. In this same time period I had also started thinking hard on my idea of wanting to become a registered nurse. So I got off my butt and stopped whining and came up with a plan. I applied to a local hospital around the corner from me for all the positions they had opened that I could qualify for without any experience. I thought if I really want to do this then I can and I just need to get to it. So I figured if I can get any job at this hospital no matter what it was I can at least get my foot in the door. It's a pretty well know hospital around my area and has it's own nursing school. Just about every job there offers tuition reimbursement. I just found out after checking my e-mail that they want to interview me next week. It's for the warehouse distributing at the hospital. Basically, I'll be stocking supplies throughout the hospital. If all goes well and I can get this job I plan to use their tuition reimbursement to start school and go for becoming a RN. The 911 dispatcher job would be my back up. If you have time in the next few days throw a prayer out there for me to get one of these jobs. More importantly the hospital one. I really need something like this right now.

Bro you can always count on me.....consider it done bro.

-
no offense...just messing with u kinda "guys" ......gay focker!!!
rickybobby: what do U men...u kinda "guys". if U R implying that male RNs are gay that's idiotic and stereotypical. 1st of all... i'm not gay & if i was that statement that U just made was very insulting 2 any male RN (gay or not). i usually don't let things bother me but i don't tolerate insulting comments like that from anyone. so... i would appreciate it that U never make those insulting comments, again because we don't tolerate that negativity here in the sly neighborhood.

Rickybobby, I think you need to chill brah. That comment about male RN's was not only foolish but way outta line.

no offense...just messing with u kinda "guys" ......gay focker!!!
THATS NOT EVEN RIGHT!!!!!!!!
DITTO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This forum is all about support...not running others down. Think you need to take a few minutes and review the posting guidelines.
-
Lance, sorry I'm late on this, but my prayers have been sent. Stay positive!!
-
First off I want to thank all of you for your support. You too Rickybobby. But I have to agree with my other sly bros that have stepped up and said what needed to be said about your comments. Don't get us wrong brother, joking is welcomed here. It's all good. But you have to know where the line is and try not to cross it. We have open arms here for anybody. That means any race, ethnicity, sexual preference, etc...As far as you questioning my becoming a nurse and me being male whether you were joking or not it's something I've been thinking about for a long time. It seems you may be comparing jobs with masculinity. If that's the case then check my other posts on some threads where I talked about how I worked as a steel worker for just about 10 years. Busted my a$$ in a steel shop pulling and lifting on steel all day for about 10-12 hours a day. Ran machinery, welded, drove a forklift, etc...Beat the hell out of my body at a real early age. I'm only 31 but my body makes me feel a lot older some days. Everyday was a struggle getting up and going into that place because I knew it just wasn't what I was meant to do. Don't get me wrong, I have total respect for people that have labor jobs. But I have a huge heart and love helping people. My son's situation was my final push out of that place and it was the best thing that ever happened to me because it gave me time to rethink my life. Now that I've had plenty of time away from that line of work and been able to check into different jobs that I think would give me more reason I've finally decided what I want to do with myself to make me a more happier person. I didn't mean to make this a long drawn out story but I just wanted to make a point that it doesn't matter who you are. If you are living a life that doesn't suit you there is nothing wrong with making a change no matter how "out of the norm" it is or what others think of you. But it's all good brother. Don't let this discourage you from continuing to post up. Just think a bit more and make sure what you're going to say won't be too offending. Stick around brother. O0

Lance, I applaud your reasons for pursuing this health career, but I am asking you stand back and take a closer look at your choice. I lost three close family members in the last year and a half. And refuse to go anywhere near a hospital or a doctor's office. Ok, I do go to my dentist. I am still traumatized by the horror's that I experienced.
You want to make a difference and help people, become an educator. There are programs where you can start out as a Para and pursue a degree, all expenses paid. Reading your posts, I've come to know you and believe this would be a better career move for you. You'd be one awesome teacher Lance.
-
Since when does it mean if you are a male nurse you are gay?? I know there are some in the field that are gay...but I have seen Chefs, politicians, Doctors, hell even McDonald workers are gay...I dont think that was fair to day RickyBobby....even if you were joking. Take Lance here for instance...he is a guy who is wanting to have an excellant career...only words like that could discourage a person from pursuing their dream. Im backing Lance 100% here...so if any of you feel that the profession he is trying to pursue is wrong..then I suggest you dont post in this thread anymore....

Thanks for the support and encouraging words brother. I hear you and I have thought about teaching before. But through my own personal experiences I would rather pursue a job in the health care field. Thanks again bro for the continued support. You are a great group of people. O0
-
Thanks for the support TimmJ and to the rest of the guys like I've said. But I think we can back off of Rickybobby now. I know what he said was a little over the line but I don't want to discourage him from a great site either. I think he's heard the jest of it and if he is indeed mature as I'm giving him credit for I think all is good. O0

AND WarHawk (Mel) ! !

I finally read through the whole thread, Lance. I believe in prayer like you do; and you have mine. Glad the hospital int'view went ok and that you get the job. The tuition benefit you spoke of is definately the answer to a prayer. Sometimes we can wrack our brains to figure out how to make something happen, and then, suddenly it it comes to us. So go for it. Nursing is a great career, demanding, meaningful (and yes; manly--but you don't need anyone to convince you of that; --look at Warhawk, after all ! ) 31 (or 32, 33) is certainly not too old to start (I started a Masters program at 48). So go for it ; My best wishes for everything falling into place
-
Young man, I know you don't want to hear these words, but don't do it. @c3
It's too demanding and far too stressful a career.
Why do you think there's a nationwide shortage of nurses?
I'm sure there are other career options out there for you.
That's my opinion. You can take it or leave it.

Ty...its all about the money bro....money money money. I think Lance would be good at it. Hell I would purposely make an overnight stay at the hospital where Lance might be working as a nurse......I need someone to help me get my red and whites up after i go potty! LOL...

tyro: i totally agree with this comment however it takes a special person 2 become a registered nurse. my GOD-DAUGHTER who is in high school wants 2 become a RN and she sought my point of view. i actually tried 2 "discourage" her 2 become an RN: i've told her of the major stress that's involved in the field and also the rewards of nursing. i told her that if U ever decide 2 enter nursing U must have the love & compassion 4 this job.
i've discussed this same subject with lance but i sense that he is that type of special person and so is my beautiful GOD-DAUGHTER. she will B graduating from high school this year and is looking 4ward 2 her interventions on becoming a RN. besides... we need special people like lance & my beautiful GOD-DAUGHTER as nurses because those R the special people that will continue 2 make this great profession special. Thanks for the great words John.
Mel, you're the best man. O0
-
Tyro, you made some good points, however, I gotta agree w/WH in that nursing is a calling of sorts - you gotta have the passion and compassion in order to do it. I consider nurses, doctors, teachers, and clergy to be the most difficult positions to hold in this world - they all require lots of dedication and though the money for teachers isn't always grand, they choose to enter the field because they feel like they're called on to do that.
Lance, bro, if nursing is your calling, go for it bro... sure there will be good and bad days, but what job doesn't have those? Nursing is really more a profession than a job anyway. I wish you nothing but the best in your pursuit and I salute you for wanting to help other people!

If you enjoy what you do, then it's not work!
Mel clearly is passionate about his profession and if I ever get sick in the Pensacola area, I'd be honored if Mel administered my Ketel One I.V. drip.
Lance, if you share this passion and desire for this noble profession, I say GO FOR IT! O0

I too and an RN hence the screen name. I have my BSN and I am also an active duty Naval Officer. I agree with WARHAWK, most of the best nurses are men!!! I think we are more grounded in reality, and can deal better with human suffering. I have been an Oncology Nurse for 3 years, and have helped many sick people get better, and those who could not have dignified deaths. Such is life.... Good luck Lance I got your back!!

Just wanted to update everyone, if you care. I received a call from the local hospital where I was trying to get employed with the other day. They hired me and want me to start next week. So I'm finally getting back to work. :) I can't wait. I had applied for 3 "general" jobs with the hospital in the hopes of getting hired on so that I can use their tuition reimbursement to, hopefully, become a RN. They hired me for the "Protection Officer" position. It use to be called "Security Guard." But they had to change the name because they had too many people that use to be security guards coming to apply thinking they were just going to walk halls and check doors their whole shift. At the hospital the "protection officer" is sort of a all round helper of sorts. The main job is security and making sure things are safe around the hospital. But I may have to transport patients to and from the hospital, help a nurse or orderly get a patient back into bed if they've fallen out, if the elevator gets stuck help get people out of the elevator, etc...I'm real excited and pumped this time around. I'm ready to make this move, get off my a$$, and make this thing happen. Tomorrow I'm going to check into my local community college right around the corner from me to see what classes I need to get started. Then I'm going to decide how much I want to take on at once. I may even start with just one class to ease back into the "groove." Just wanted to give an update and say thank to all my sly bros for the words of encouragement. O0
