I finally took the plung last night and shaved my head for the first time. The kids reaction in the morning was priceless. My 18 mo. old touched her head and said "where'd go?"
Anyway, I've been a prosecutor for 10 years. I handle felony cases including drug deliveries, sexual assaults, murders, etc. I'm also an avid hiker who loves challenging myself. Last year I did America's Hardest Dayhike, the Timberline Trail, around Mt. Hood in around 22 hours (41 miles with 12,000 feet of elevation gain/loss). Also, hiked 53 miles from Lake Michigan to Lake Superior in one day once. There a few interesting short videos and hike write-ups on my website: www.roykranz.com Check it out and let me know what you think.
This is a great site. Thanks for all the moral support and answers to my questions. I'm sure there will be a lot more to come.

Thanks guys for all the words of encouragement. I feel like I have my own cyber support network backing my play. I'm approximately 24 hours in. So far the reception has not been that bad. No one has laughed in my face yet. The temperature here in Michigan today was in the 30s most of the day and man my bare head was cold. I'm going to have to remember to take a hat with me whenever I go out. Speaking of hats, I'm concerned about summer. When hiking, golfing, etc. I typically wear a baseball hat. Not sure that will be a wise choice w/ the sly look. I imagine there could be pretty goofy looking tan lines after a long day out in the sun. Do I not wear a hat? Should I buy a hat that has a brim all the way around so that everythings covered? Should I lather on the sunscreen and nix the hat completely or what? I need some sly brother help. I can't believe we had snow fluries today and I'm worried about my tan lines in the summer. 8)

I have several hats for cool weather and hot. I have full brim hats, baseball caps, skullys and bandannas too!
Don't forget the sun screen though! O0
Picked this one up a couple months ago for the cold here: (https://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi25.tinypic.com%2F2uojhxi.jpg&hash=42f25dd37f26529166e9af023cc1f995b19526f3) O0

g-rock... last year was my 1st summer as a sly guy. i live in beautiful pensacola. it is located in the nw part of florida. winters can B cold at times but mainly mild as is the spring. however...summer and all the way 2 october the heat is unbearable. thank GOD 4 a/c. anyways... i don't wear caps or hats. i always wear sunscreen year round but i apply more on during the summer months. i usually apply banana boat sunscreen or baldguyz sunscreen. i go back and forth with these 2. however...lately i've been using the badlguyz sunscreen more.
if U do tend 2 have sensitive skin... U may want 2 go back and forth with wearing a cap, hat w/ brim, & go hatless. however... you'll find your own routine. your dome will definitely let ya know. so... far last summer i learned that if i apply the sunscreen often... i can usually avoid sun burn. anyways... hope it helps. in the meantime... when the warmer weather finally visits michigan just experiment. U R welcome 2 ask more questions later.

Looks outstanding.
As far as the sun is concerned, I very rarely wear a hat, but I do believe in sunscreen. In 11 years of shaving luckily I have never had a sunburn. Start now with the sunscreen and build up your tan, you should be cool.

Hey man, you didn't tell us what was your inspiration for shaving it off. From you website you still had loads of hair. (BTW I shave my full head (well almost full-head) of hair off everyday because I like it!)
-
Welcome to the forum guy...great to have you here. Hiking has always been an interest in me...but I know you have to be in good condition to do that kind of hiking....would love to do it some day....any pointers to get started??

Welcome Glowingrock, nice to have you!
I too am from the south, GA, and I never wear a hat. If I am outside for a few hours, I use the Matte for Men SPF15, which works well for me. If I am hitting the beach for half or a full day I break out the SPF 35 or 45 sweatproof and apply about every hour or 2. Have never burnt the dome. I also have a couple of headsweat classics that breath really well and in my opinion look decent enough to wear on the course or other places, and I will stick one in my pocket in case there isn't alot of shade out. Keeps the sun off the back of my neck also.
The breeze may be cool now at 30, but wait till the spring when you can ride with the windows down, nothing else like it 8)

The inspiration for shaving it off was that the hair was starting to thin in the front. Not too terribly bad but noticable enough. Instead of fighting it, just decided to embrace it.
TimmJ you asked about getting into hiking: Yes, being in great shape helps, however, there are many excellent hikes that are not long and challenging. Also, other than working out a few times a week, I don't really train for these 53 miles in one day kind of hikes. Once you get to a certain point, everyone hurts and it becomes 90% mental. You want to quit but you push yourself to go on. Most people I know think I'm nuts and do NOT do that kind of hiking. Now for the advice: the best way to get into hiking is to pick hikes that are not too hard or too long (to begin with) and have something really cool like a waterfall at the end of them as a reward/goal. Also, go with someone you like who has a good attitude. It is amazing how you can go to a crowded national park and as soon as you get a mile or two down a trail you almost have the whole place to yourself. Another good tip is to do your first couple of hikes when the you have good weather and the bugs are not too bad. September tends to be an excellent month for both of those. Also, check around to see if you have a hiking club in your area. We didn't have one, so I started it up myself, the Midland Hiking Club: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/midlandhikingclub/ Another nice benefit of hiking/backpacking/camping is that it is really inexpensive. We usually travel with free airline tickets from credit card miles. So we go to some great place like Hawaii or Alaska and all we have to pay for is a rental car. If you book that way ahead of time that can be pretty cheap too. Then we backpack or frontcountry camp 2/3s of the time and get a motel/hotel/cabin for 2 or 3 days mixed in. The trips are cheap, we see amazing and beautiful things (see my youtube video at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPy2sV1ZHCI for examples of the stuff we see -that video isn't on my website currently), and we have unique experiences. I would do it that way even if I made the big bucks but as a public servant with two little kids, it makes a lot of sense. There are also some great websites and books out there that you can learn from and be inspired by. Another good tip is to hike/backpack with someone that is experienced and knows what they are doing. They will probably be able to loan to you or find someone else that you can borrow gear from so you can see if you like it before you buy equipment. You can learn a lot from someone like that. Hope that helps.

Welcome, glowingrock. That dome will be good and seasoned once the warm weather hits...give it the 30-day trial period if you can. It'll become second nature and in a week or so, you won't be shocked when you look in the mirror. Keep the SPF at 30 or higher and let 'er shine. O0
