hello fellow chrome domes... just wondering... do U have a fear of public speaking? R U good at it or are U terrible at it? i'll start: public speaking is my worst phobia (ever). i hate it. i'm a very good one on one type of person but when it comes 2 public speaking i'm speechless. :/O my brother who is a high school english teacher is a great public speaker. he states that he gets nervous b4 a speech or presentation but once he gets that "mike" he does well.
so... how 'bout U? what R your experiences with public speaking? what's your story? oh...and if U have any tips on fighting my phobia of public speaking...i would luv 2 hear about it.

As a high school teacher I get plenty of experience in front of an "audience" and ususally don't have a problem with speaking in public. Though when I act and sing for various local performances I DO get the jitters THERE, but ususally it is more a fear of forgetting the words to the song or my lines than the fear of performing. Once I get the first few words out, I am good to go.

have spoken a lot. No real issues, as long as I'm prepared.
-
It used to be a problem, but not so much anymore since I have to on almost a daily basis...
-
Doesnt bother me at all really. I guess if I am uncomfortable or unprepared I get nervous about that but the act of getting up in front of people has never been an issue for me.

I have to speak in front of large groups for my job quite a bit, so I don't get nervous much. I've been told I'm good at giving a speech.

Since I am a recruiter I do alot of public speaking to High School students almost daily. I used to dread it but now it is ok.

I think everyone has some sort of fear of speaking in front of large groups of people ifyou havent done it very much. I know when the first time I got up in front of my church to speak..I was like nervous as all get out........youre talking about 800 people, sitting there watching you with a spot light on you. I just kept telling myself...its ok..its ok....and to be honest...all i remember is a large aplause when I was finished...and I couldnt even tell you what I even said. I had my outline in hand...but when I was finished...I hadnt even opened it.

That's the key for me. As long as I'm prepared there are not any issues. But to speak off the cuff, especially if I don't know what I'm talking about......That is when I have problems.

Thats a great exercise, inventing long stories about nothing in particular that you really don't have a clue about. When i had my summerjobs at basketball camps i sometimes had to keep the interest of kids from ages 7-16 for a loong time while waiting for whatever it was.
Now i have no problem making public speeches at all.
Bet you didn't know the rubber in basketball shoes comes from the forefathers of those little aliens in spacejam ;D

being as shy as i am, public speaking is the worst. ;) ;)

No issue for me at all. Actually I enjoy it.

Never really had to do it except for back in school and I couldn't stand it then. I would like to think it would have gotten better by now but would be nervous as hell.

Warhawk, I am the EXACT opposite as you are. I am great when it comes to speaking in front of large groups. I was in drama club in high school and have been in many different plays, and I love giving speeches. It doesn't really matter if I am prepared or not, I don't get nervous. Then again, if you told me to give you a speech right now on something I know nothing about, I wouldn't know what to say, but if I am even slightly knowledgeable on the subject, I will do fine.
When it comes to one on one, I freak out. That is why I have such a hard time getting anywhere with the opposite sex. I can only talk freely to them once I know I don't have a chance (like if I find out they have a boyfriend/fiance/husband). If they are single, I will have a hard time getting to know them because I am always self-conscious about what I am saying and looking like an idiot.
I guess I am not afraid of looking like an idiot in front of a large group because there is a pretty good chance that at least someone in the audience will find me funny. When it comes to one on one conversation, my jokes only have a 50-50 chance of being funny...and I make a lot of things not knowing if they will be funny or not.

Just like everything else, the more you do something, the better you get.
I’d love to get into motivational speaking, but I procrastinate too much. :D

I'm always a little nervous. The better I have prepared my material the quicker I settle down and the nervousness goes away. ;)

Its just like having sex...lol the more you do it..the better you are! LOL

I remind my wife that although I'm not as good as I once was, I'm as good once as I ever was! :o
