hello fellow chrome domes....i was at a nursing seminar the other day and they had a lot of snacks and coffee 4 all the nurses in the room. one of the snacks reminded me of my childhood days in chicagoland... it was a very tasty rice krispy treats. man....my mom used 2 make 'em 4 my brother and me and it just brought back some good ole memories. :@`
so....what guilty pleasure reminds U of your childhood days? i don't eat rice krispy treats as often but yesterday i was a little kid, again. so what's your story? and do U still eat your special treat 2day?

Sitting way up in the bleechers at Shea, eating peanuts and drinking orangeade. Man they had great peanuts at Shea, fresh roasted and in paper bags. And listening to Jane Jarvis play that mighty Wurlitzer. She really knew how to get the crowd going, with her renditions of "Meet the Mets" and "Take Me Out To The Ball Game"! The Wurlitzer is long gone and replaced by recorded rock. I wonder if the new Citipark will have an organ. I doubt it.
Shea was a beauty before they did a modernization job on it!

Speaking of chocolate milk. Add a grilled cheese sandwich with some green chili between the cheese and I'm set!

Gawd....those damn things...get me introuble every freakin time. Not to mention that just before I popped open this topic..I had just shoved down the last peep i had. Every time I walk into a store and they ahve them...I pick up a package....hell for 99cents..you cant afford not to buy em. Im just glad now that htey have them for all the holidays......kinda takes the fun out of it....but I have even noticed they have 4th of July stars out too ..and halloween, thanksgiving...and christmas and they came out wiht a new one this past year....strawberry flavored hearts for valentines day..mmmmmmmmm those were good.
So I will have to say Peeps and Reese's Cups will always be on the top of my list for candy snacks.

Corn dogs, man.....corn dogs....the smell and taste of those babies :@`
Very distinctly and fondly remind me of my childhood summers spent on Catalina Island.

Mine would be a cookie. It's two Ritz crackers, with peanut butter between them (like a sandwich), all dipped in chocolate. They're very good. Takes me back to holidays at my great granparents' house wth all the family. Good times.

Dodger -- I remember all that you mentioned. My grandfather had season tickets for the Mets back then and I remember attending games regularly at Shea during the mid-to-late-60s. Good memories...

Wow this is great.
Everytime I chew sunflower seeds it reminds me of times when my dad and I used to fish back in Michigan. Dad used to always have David sunflower seeds in the tackle box and we used to chew away on em!
-
Ice Cream, always takes me back. So does sour gum. My buddies and I used to see how many pieces of sour gum we could shove into our mouth at one time.
-
Mine would have to be the Flavo-Ice plastic cicles. We could go all day on those things while playing outside, was the only reason to come in the house for 2 minutes.
Other than that... A rootbeer float!!! :P

How about those wax tubes and shapes with the juice inside?, or the little wafers with the little round candy inside? we used to call em flying saucers, lol
We had the coolest penny candy store in my Grandmothers neighborhood, where I pretty much grew up. All my friends were there. It was a small store but it was just packed with all kinds of toys, gadgets and candy. The coolest place for kids. They had one of those curved glass display cases with all the penny candies inside. You could go there with fifty cents, hell even a quarter and have yourself a feast.
What a great store and a great time. You don't see things like that anymore. :(
(funny, as I write this, Don Henleys' " End of the Innocence" is playing, kinda fitting in a way.)

xnewyawka,
Could you get a "Chocolate Egg Cream" soda at that candy store?
I had a similar place, Sol & Jean's, in my neighborhood.
Do you remember Fox's U-Bet Syrup? Had that stuff by the heap on ice cream sundaes. What about that cake covered in whipped cream. I think it was called a Charlotte Russe. That takes me back.
You must of heard of Jahn's Ice Cream. There were several stores
throughout the boroughs. Sad to report their last store in Richmond Hill just closed up shop this January. Another victim of high rent.

OK, back on subject-
Bazooka Bubblegum :)
Hostess Snowballs ^-^
yes, and all that other stuff mentioned, like the flavored liquid in the wax bottles that you'd chew on for hours and get all the wax stuck between your teeth.
Don't forget wax lips too :D and all that penny candy O0 O0
-
Sour patch kids. As many of us had, there was a great store in my granparents' neighborhood that sold all sorts of it. The sour patch kids were my favorite, along with tootsie rolls, sweedish fish, circus peanuts, baseball cards with the gum inside, Garbage Pail kids cards, blow pops, tootsie roll pops, red hot dollars, oh, the list goes on and on...
-
Well.....well.......well....damnit....just dont eat yella snow! :)

I liked Grape Big League Chew. It rocked!

Boy, I'm glad I'm not the only who actually experienced penny candy. There was a local store in my neighborhood owned by an old gentleman that had penny licorice, Bazooka, Tootsie Rolls, etc. He also sold flat taffy that measured about a foot by 3 inches and popsicles, including banana flavored. He also had 'expensive' plastic models in his sidewalk display windows which you had to put together -- I think they were around 65 whole cents.
I also used to love Sweet Tarts, especially the giant ones, Wacky Wafers which were kind of like Sweet Tarts only with flavors like watermelon and peach, large squares of sour apple bubble gum which seemed to always have silly 70's smiley face stickers, and Dairy Queen Mister Misties, very finely ground ice in a sickingly-sweet syrup. I don't know how I could eat such disgusting stuff!
-
A good 'ol grilled cheese sandwich. Man! I ate tons of these as a kid and I still do now. Every time I eat one I think of when I was growing up.

Oh, heck yeah. I grew up on chips and ketchup. Still eat them to this day. As a matter of fact before I logged on here I had a few chips with some ketchup. My favorite is Utz Sour Cream & Onion with ketchup. Something about that sour cream & onion taste just goes with some ketchup. And Utz loads on the flavoring. Man, that's it......I gotta go get some damn chips, a grilled cheese, or something.
-
Ketchup in chili is awesome too. I love it...and got my kids doing it too and it grosses out my wife. SHe says it runs the chili....??? Ketchup...made mostly of tomatoes....Chili.....base ingredient....tomatoes...hmmm I dont find teh connection.
Ketchup on scrambled eggs....never have done that but...but...i do like to make a fried egg....hard fried..not no runny center....put on bread ..salt pepper and ketchup. That sounds awesome right now too.............

I will name several guilty pleasures from childhood. One was Captain Crunch with Crunchberries cereal. I also remember my mom making me mayonnaise sandwiches. It was just the mayo between two slices of bread. When I would go over to my cousin's house, I remember having hot cocoa with buttered toast at the side. Grandma would also make me peanut butter and Premium saltine cracker sandwiches.
As a adult, I have two Canadian guilty pleasures. One is Old Dutch Dill Pickle flavour potato chips. I know that Dill Pickle has been introduced to the US but in the past, I would bring back some whenever I would visit British Columbia. The other food is something called, "Poutine". It is yummy and very bad for you! It is french fried with white cheddar cheese curds and gravy. It is not too well know in the states either!
I would go on, but that is enough for now!

Hey, I can definitely agree with you on that Crunch berry cereal. That stuff is good. I have some in the cabinet right now.

Salami and cheese crackers.
We used to make little pizzas by putting some pizza sauce on a ritz or saltine cracker, then a slice or salami with a slice of cheese on top. We'd then cook it in the microwave until the cheese melted. Yummy!
-
heinz al the way O0
I always like a few fries with my ketchup O0

I don't buy Heinz anymore for the pure fact that they switched their recipe to use high fructose corn syrup instead of sugar. Hunts is the same way. Instead I buy some O Organics brand Ketchup. It's only 50 cents more.

Yo Marsh....you a mayo sandwich eater too? Only we didnt use mayo..we used Miracle Whip. That stuff is good on just about anything. I remember times when i would just take a piece of bologna.....spread some miracle whip on it...roll it up and eat it on the way out the door. Sometimes I would make 3 or 4 of these at one time LOL. And the cap'n crunch berries....dont laugh....but im actually sitting here eating a bowl of em. When I get towards the end of the bowl....i have to make sure I have two berries left and 1 square. LOL

I think thats what I like to, but the high fructose corn syrup will kill ya its terrible for you it does nothing but turn to fat
-
Well, if ketchup seems a bit "tame" to ya, switch to something with a bit more zing (in the tomato type category, namely salsa! )-m
Going back to youth, I remember peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and dunking them in chicken noodle soup on a cold, wet day. :)

One of my favorite things as a kid was peanut butter mixed-up with Karo syrup. Spread that stuff on some bread and I was a happy kid.
Now I'm not gonna be able to get that stuff outta my mind until I make some and I don't think it fits with my diet. :Xo!
-
mmm Karo syrup that stuff is aweome on pancakes. My dad always uses teh Dark Karo on his pancakes. Just something about it when it is swirled around wth the butter on a nice stack of pancakes. Actually just last weekend I found a store that carried the green label Karo....adn we had pancakes, bacon and sausage for supper one night. I like breakfast food for dinner occasionally, always seems to taste better.
