Title: Greetings
Post by: Bailiwick on February 29, 2008, 09:00:14 AM
Hey all,

I've been reading through your forums for a couple of days now, and I have to say it's impressive!  This seems like a great, supportive community!

I'm in my mid-30's.  It was a couple of years ago that MPB first started to become a fact, although it was a year or two previous to that that I first started wondering if I was going to lose my hair.

I grew up thinking, no way was I going to lose my hair as I had really thick, curly hair and my father still had all his hair as he grew older.  Then I learned that the MPB gene comes through the mother's line.  Now it makes sense, since that side of the family has less hair than a cue ball.

I always new I would shave my head if it came down to it.  I think it's a good look and  most guys sport it well.  I'm still nervous to do it, though, which from this board seems to be pretty typical.  I've always had long hair, and recently buzzed it down to a #3 clipper length -- the shortest I've ever had my hair, and I really like it!  It totally exposes my receeding hairline, but I feel so much better, freer and more comfortable.

I also don't worry about whether or not people can tell I'm going bald.  It's obvious now, and just knowing that and accepting that has caused a reduction of stress.  I think that's a glimpse of the confidence that comes with being sly that you guys talk about on the boards.  It feels good!

Still I'm going to take it slow and buzz my hair down slowly.  I bought a pair of electric clippers a couple of years ago when I first realized that I was going bald.  I kept holding off on shaving it, though, and yes, I do wish that I had done it earlier.

Still I figure in the next month or two I'll go all the way.  I guess you can call me a fence sitter, but I'm not sure that term applies.  I know I'm going to do it soon, but I'm just going to work into it slowly.

Be talking to ya'll soon...

Bailiwick - Take it as slow as you need to. It took me 6 years to from #3 to #2 to #1 to no guard then to sly. I wish I hadn't taken so long. I'm lovin' the sly! :@`

Welcome Bailiwick. Glad to have you on board and nice to know the info that's being posted is helping your decision. It is a liberating feeling to just shave it off when you've been dealing with MPB like so many of us here have. No worries, no wondering "Is she focusing on my receding hairline"? It's all out there.

If I may, I would suggest taking it to a #2 pretty soon. My experience was that there's not a lot of difference between #3 & #2. The big differences are when you go from #2 to #1 and so on. I have a feeling that once you use the #2, you'll want to go even further.

JUST DO IT, MAN!  O0

Cheers!

Hey'a -
Took me quite a while also to go completly clean....just kept getting shorter and shorter, until I finally got tired of always trying to trim to a #1 or 2.... I just got to the point where I said "to heck with it" and went for it...( 'sides my b/f really likes it better anyway)....

  Robb

guess i'm saying - just do it, if you don't like it, it'll grow back !!

Welcome, Bailiwick!

Yes, go your way down to #0 and then do the deed! It will look very good! And like the Bros said, it's just hair, it will regrow if needed.

Have a nice time and go shave and times will be better!

Welcome Bailiwick.  I went to #3 9-07-07, and I was Sly on 10-07-07.  Get a clipper, a cheap one about $10-12 at WalMart, you won't use it for long so don't spend a lot.  See you Sly Smooth Soon.

Welcome, Bailwick,  Glad that you found us.  This is definitely the place to come for support and info for helping you make your way to SLY.  It took me several years to get to clipped really short before I found this site. But only 2 weeks from the time I found the site to completely smooth.

Hope you have the same experience.  Hope to see you around the forum.

       Rob-

I'll respectfully disagree. There isn't a bald man in site on my Mom's side. Her father died at 74 with a head of full, thick, white hair. My Mom's four brothers all still have full heads of hair.

Now my Dad's side is a different animal. My grandfather was bald (MPB) as long as I could remember and my Dad (74 years old)  was very thin at a young age and also has MPB.......... same for me. I knew pretty young from looking at my Dad and his Dad that MPB was in my future.

I think that "Mom's side thing" may be a bit of a myth but maybe someone more educated about this can chime in.

Well, from my family experience, my mom's brother (Uncle) is bald, and my Grandfather on my mom's side is bald...and the same Grandmother says that he father was bald.  And, to make it more convoluted, my grandmother's brother's children (my cousins), none of them have MPB.

Baldness is on my mom's side, but I agree with you.  I'll bet it was an observation by perhaps numerous people, but then it took on a life of it's own, and soon anytime that was observed, it became 'additional proof' that it was a 'fact.'  But hey, if there is some biological evidence, I'm all ears.

I like you thought I would never loose my hair...I went through the long hair stage as a youth, decent hair until my 30"s and was convinced after that, that I just had a high forehead.
Slowly I worked my hair shorter and shorter and finally said the hell with it and took the plunge...Now I ain't never going back.... O0
