Vegas is nothing like the movies. There are not hot cocktail waitresses who bring you free drinks if you are killing it at a table. You are guaranteed to lose your money, get ripped off in one way or another.

If you want to come to the USA for a holiday I would recommend somewhere else other than NYC ,LA or Vegas, which is it where it seems all European and Australian tourists chose to go when they come over. Try seeing Real America like the Pacific Northwest,The Rockies,The Deep South or Texas.

i agree I went to Vegas last year....WORST TIME OF MY LIFE.  Nothing like you see on TV.  NOT even close.  Biggest dissappointment in my life.  I would have had more fun on a beach somewhere.  Dont visit those big cities....if you really want to see what America is all about...visit the rural areas....thats where you see the real USA

Well where I live in "cow country" you could go just down the road and visit Gettyburg to learn some real American History.

Or visit Luray Caverns just a few hours away and see the Blue Ridge Mountains while at it.

Etc., Etc., Etc.....

dont worry Mike, Razor wasnt trying to be offensive.

people from New Jersey are just perpetually cynical. One of the greatest things about being from New Jersey is never having to apologize for anything. >:D

It's funny, I was being sarcastic when I said there's nothing to do in Vega$. There's TONS to do there. Of course, it comes at a price.
I'm actually leaving for Vega$ this Weds for a family trip. But, not the typical Vega$ trip. My parents, my brother and his wife & son, and the Lovely Mrs. Schro's aunt & uncle all live within 2 miles of each other in the Summerlin area. So, whenever we go there, it's more of a family get together than a Vega$ getaway. We really don't care for the strip. When the Lovely Mrs. Schro and I go out while we're in Vega$, we typically go to one of the smaller casinos like the Suncoast or the Red Rock Casino near where the family lives. We have a few drinks, play some cards, and forget the kids for a few hours.

Hey Mike, we went to the Luray Caverns a couple of months ago. Loved the Shenandoah Valley! Although, Virgina Wines...... !*u%e . I don't know if it was the soil or that particular winery, but man....It was a little winery outside of Basye (did have some great North Carolina Syrahs though  O0). . Took in a demonstration by the North/South Skirmish Association, went through Winchester (loved the Court House Museum), awesome area.

I felt like letting some of the locals in on a little secret ...... the Civil War is over!  :*)) Or, as some called it, The War of the Northern Aggression.

I'm on my phone now, but when I get to my computer I'll bust out some good places to go check out in Sin City.

Looks like Rodger already beat me to answering that question.  Not sure if the real Jersey shore can actually live up to the glowing description he gave, but it can be a fun place to visit.

I would actually like to visit Gettysburg sometime and the Luray Caverns would also be worth seeing.  But I'm just trying to look at this from the point of view of someone in another country who wants to visit the US for a two-week stay.  There's not enough there to keep you occupied for an entire vacation, so you do get more bang for your buck (or quid) by visiting the major tourist attractions.  If I lived in the UK and was planning to visit the US for the first time, I'd be thinking of visiting Washington, New York, perhaps Disney World, perhaps Vegas.  As a history buff, I'd probably also want to see Philadelphia, the birthplace of the nation.  It would never cross my mind to visit the midwest and see the heartland.

I guess what I was refering to was.....Vegas is not like you see on TV. My expectations were really high.  You dont see the show girls parading around  ( although I did see one and got to have my picture with her)  the beers actually arent free.....cause you feel inclined in giving the lady a tip for bringing it to you.   To get anywhere..you walk...and you walk...and you walk.  Although I really did enjoy the roller coaster at NY NY....but overall....its not a destination that I am planning on returning to anytime in the near future.

I go to Vega$ several times a year for family. To be honest, if it wasn't for family, I'd never go. If we ever have the desire to play some cards, The Lovely Mrs. Schro & I go to Lake Tahoe. They have a couple of casinos & one the prettiest lakes I've ever seen.

Last time I was in Vegas(early '06), I actually left the city $600 in front. My 2 trips prior you could say that I left with literally the clothes on my back. My bank account was about 5 figures less too.

Gettysbury is cool; so is the Amish Country.  If you want to see the real horror of "The Wah-ah" (as they say down here), go to Andersonville.

Chicago is a great place to see all the American styles of architecture.

When you go to Vegas you have to set limits on your self or don't go, because if you don't you will leave with only the shirt on your back if your lucky. Play only what you expect to lose and if you win its a bonus and if you lose its no big deal.

I paid for the furniture in my family room with one crazy night at the blackjack tables (including a leather couch and a loveseat). That weekend, my brother left with a smokin' hot blackjack dealer and we ate out at Ruth Chris' (twice), got sloppy drunk, and I still got on the plane +$6,000. I planned out how I was going to tell the Lovely Mrs. Schro about my winnings. This is how it went:
TLMS: "So, how was the weekend?"
Schro: "Honey, how long would I have to wait for sex if I told you I lost a grand?" I could see her getting steamed, so I quickly told her "Don't worry, I didn't lose a grand. In fact, I won a little". Before I walked into the bedroom, I took the 60 or so $100 bills and put a few in each pocket and then untucked my shirt and put the rest inside the waistline of my jeans. I then proceeded to pull the $100's out of each pocket and threw them on the bed, a la "Indecent Proposal". The Lovely Mrs. Schro was quite happy that night.  :@` ::)

By the way, for you young parents, leather furniture cleans up a lot easier than cloth.

Great story Schro!

Like Nomad said, if you plan on gambling you need to set a gambling budget and stick to it.  I love to play cards, specifically Blackjack, when I'm in Vegas.  At my bachelor party I started off with $200 (out of my $500 budget) and hit the table with a buddy.  There was also another guy that sat down at the same time, he also cashed in with $200.  7 hours later we all left the table with a combined $50,000!  Though my portion was only $4,000 and my buddy was at $6,000, but the other guy left with $40,000!  I would have had close to $10,000 but I lost two $2000 hands right near the end and a few $500 hands.  It was a wild ride and we had the pit bosses going crazy because they didn't know what to do to shut us down.  About 5 min later my buddy and I took another $1000 from the roulette table.  We noticed that it kept hitting within the same 5 numbers about 70% of rolls.  Because of this, we each bet $5 on each of the 5 numbers.  It hit those numbers 6 out of the 8 rolls that we played.  It's a $160 payout everytime we hit the number.  It was nuts.  Needless to say that pretty much paid for the honeymoon.

Hello, well that has put me off going there, What is the best place to visit as i like the sun and sightseeing, plenty of sightseeing in england but not much sun. Do not like amusements parks but used to watch miami vise a few years ago, that looks ok.

One thing to know is that Vegas offers pretty much anything you want to do except snow ski and hang out at the ocean.  Though, there is a "beach" at one of the resorts.  It also has some of the finest food and nightlife a city could offer.  Are you traveling alone or with someone?

I know that you want to go in December, so if you like sun, then you're going to want to stick to the southwest United States or Miami in the Southeast.  The major cities in the southwest are Las Vegas, Phoenix, Los Angeles, and San Diego.  Depending on how long you will be here in the US, you could see most of those areas without spending much more money.  For example you could do something like this.

Fly into Las Vegas for two nights (you won't need much more than that) and have a good time enjoying the nightlife and checking out all of the casinos.  You could even do a helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas or go out and check out Hoover Dam.  On your third day, you could either drive to Los Angeles, which is about 5 hours of driving, or you could fly for relatively cheap and it only takes 1 hour to fly.  If you go to Vegas and want to stay in a high end place, go to the Wynn or Venitian.  For a luxury without the price check out the Platinum Hotel.  For a good value I like the Monte Carlo or Caesar's Palace.

Once in LA I recommend staying in Santa Monica.  If you have some cash to spend then Shutters On The Beach or Viceroy are two great hotels with great locations right by the beach.  Santa Monica is centrally located to the airport, Hollywood, and Malibu.  It also has a TON of great restaurants and nightlife  that you can walk to from the two hotels that I mentioned.  There is also plenty of shopping if you're taking a lady or if you like to shop yourself.  Plus, you can walk to the beach that you probably always see on TV.  You know the one right by the pier with the ferris wheel in the background.

If you stay in Santa Monica, I recommend heading up to Malibu for a day.  It actually borders Santa Monica and will take about 30 minutes to get to anywhere in Malibu from Santa Monica.  There are some great beaches in Malibu and if you want some good seafood, go to Malibu Seafood for lunch.  Or you can go hang out at Dukes for some good food and great scenery.  If you're into seeing celebs, go to the Cross Creek area in Malibu.   It's a little place with shops and dining that a lot of celebs hang out at.  If you like Sushi, there's a place called Nobu that is great, but pretty expensive in that area.  For Greek food, check out Taverna Tony's.

There's always the famous Sunset Strip to go check out.  You can start out at Sunset Beach in Malibu and drive all the way up Sunset Blvd to the strip.  It's pretty scenic drive and you'll see some amazing houses in Beverly Hills.  If you're into nightlife, Sunset Blvd is where the action is.

For shopping there's the Beverly Center mall or you can cruise around Melrose Blvd in Hollywood for the more funky shops.

If you have some time and you want to visit some really cool places, drive north from Santa Monica for 1 hour and 30 minutes up the coast and you'll come to Santa Barbara.  Probably one of my most favorite places in CA.  If you head south about 1 hour, you'll end up in Newport Beach and Laguna Beach.  Recently made famous by the show O.C. as these are both in Orange County.  From there you're only 30 minutes west of Disneyland should you so desire to see Mickey.

San Diego is about a 3 hour drive from Santa Monica and also has some really cool things to see.  Though, I'm not as familiar with San Diego as I am with Los Angeles.

Phoenix is a great city to visit also, especially if you just want to relax.  They have some great resorts there and plenty of golf courses.  Though, that is high season for Phoenix as it's one of the best times to play golf.  If you do go, you'll want to stay in the Scottsdale area as it has most of the touristy stuff you'll want to see.

That's my take on things to visit in the Soutwest.   Miami is a great city to visit, but I've only been there once and I'm not sure how it is during December.  ChicoD may be able to fill you in on that place.

OR..... OR...You could just come to Southern Indiana and visit Timmj. Yelp here in lil ol Washington Indiana we are only a short trip away from many attractions.  Here in SW Indiana we are amongst one the largest Amish populations in the state.  It isnt uncommon to see a horse and buggy pulling up to your store front.  We have beautiful Lake Monticello to our north home to Indiana Beach.  Fun filled day there where you can rent a cabin and just enjoy all the scenery it has to offer.  Also Washington is just  a short 2 hour trip by car to Indianapolis home of the Indianapolis 500 that is offered on Memorial Day weekend and the BrickYard which takes place in August.  If you are into auto racing..this is a must.

Who am I kidding....SW Indiana has got to be the most boring place in Indiana....there is nothing to do around here.  I often have wondered to myself...why did I have to be born in such a boring place...and what keeps me here???
