I was just curious as to how many of you in here connect to your computer on a Wireless LAN. I have been lucky enough to receive a new laptop which has wireless capabilities. I can now sit on my lounge and post on SBG's while listening to my iTunes. My PC is now history! No wires or nothing.
Just curious to who else here on SBG's has a similar setup?

Not me....not yet. I think the time is coming though. Im just not fortunate enough right now to have the extra cash flow to purchase stuff like that.
-
No man I am still stuck behind a old PC. I am looking to get a nice Laptop with wireless for sure. I allow myself 1 big purchase per year. And this year it is either a new HD TV or a sweet MAC Laptop.

Timmy, believe me, No way in hell I can afford a laptop either.
My brother in law works for HP and has been kind enough to give me his old laptop as his work has paid for him to get a brand new one.
-
Thats sweet Jdog. My cousins husband works for the Navy and I can buy a laptop from him at minimal cost....after seeing your post I called him because I remembering him telling me that at one time. I can get laptop for around 200 bucks.

I just saw a sweet offer in the paper today. A local supermarket chain is offering a laptop for $299.
At first I thought this is a super deal. But when I looked at the fine print, I realized this may not be so good after all. They are factory restored Dell Laptops, w. Windows 2000 OS, Pentium lll, and a 40 Gig Hardrive. Plays DVD's but has no CD/DVD burner.
As you can see it would need "some" major upgrading.
What's your thoughts on this one? Is it worth the $299?

We purchased a laptop over a year and a half ago and it has greatly improved the usability of the computers in our house. We still have the PC, but it hardly ever gets used. The wireless was pretty simple to set up and now I sit in my easy chair and talk to my SLY bald buddies. I think it's great.
-
We use the wireless router for the home office (where I'm at 90% of the time). The Lovely Mrs. Schro has a PC upstairs and I have a company-issued laptop.
-
One and only computer in the house is a laptop with wireless router. With living in two different places throughout the year, was the only option that made sense.
-
I guess I am a computer whore .. I have 6 computers. Three in the office. One that serves as a server of sorts and one "family" computer, and then one that I use for .. well, I don't know exactly. Maybe I should turn it off. And then the Laptop.
Anyway, the laptop is wireless. I bought it last year to use as a backup encase my Internet goes out I can pack up and go into town. My income is dependent on my ability to be online.
Wireless is nice, although I prefer wired. I have an Ethernet port in every room in the house except the bathroom. Wireless is pretty cheap to implement. The only reason I can think of to have it is for a laptop, or maybe a computer that you just can't get wired to. Wireless is and will never be as fast as wired. Still .. its kinda nice to sit on the front porch with the laptop.
I'm not sure that post was either informative or coherent .. it was wireless rambling I think.

I've had a wireless setup for six or seven years...if you've got a laptop, it's the only way to go. I use both my personal and work laptops on the network, as well as a desktop that's mostly for my daughter to do educational games. I haven't really noticed any speed issues on the wireless network. I don't have any trouble streaming music or video...I watch TV on my computer more than I do on the television.
-
I have wireless even though I have wired my entire house with ports in the wall. I have to access points in my house so that my wife and I can roam anywhere and still have a great connection.
-
WELL... Does anybody know how to install PONG on my TIMEX SINCLAIR ? I just got a new 12" black n white tv to use as my momitor , so now as soon as i can get the paddles to move , i know my PONG is functional as long as it doesnt use up too much memory
-
I used to have a desktop that I gave away after getting a laptop with wireless. I have a desk that I should just sell too. I never sit at my desk. My recliner is so much more comfortable. Or sitting on the back patio smoking a cigar like I am now.
-
I've been using a laptop with a wireless router for over a year and it's the best. Just be sure you secure your wireless access so you don't have any un-invited users.
-
100% wireless here, both desktop and wife's laptop. Apparently 4 of my neighbors are wireless too, their routers show up on my available networks. Don't forget to WEP/WAP encrypt guys! O0
-
If you have a wireless router make sure you change the admin password on it [you can long into your router, check the user manual] It's incredible easy to hack wireless networks as well if your not using wep or better. The only thing I don't like about wireless networking is that it's not as fast as fiber. But I use both :)

Not worth it my friend, you could pick that up from someone on kijiji.com for about 100$ or better.

1ST- Dell sucks- this company use to be the best when they were doing strictly enterprise servers, I believe they even came out with the blade servers first before HP. Then they took their name and targeted the home PC users, the quality dropped dramatically, they rated right beside Gateway. Such a shame.
My personal experience is that, unless your a big gamer, I would stick with HP or Acer. Never buy anything that contains a Celeron processor, you can beef the memory up but the celerons cannot handle the flow of information.
Just my personal opinion

I am not a gamer, I use the computer for 5 main reasons.
1.Porn
2.Email.
3.iTunes
4.SBG's/Ebay and surfing the web
5.Pictures/Image making

JDog, I know you're "fibbing" about 1 of those reasons. ::)

For me it's 2pc's and one laptop,
One dual core 1gig of ram for my 5year old network wired
one dual core 2 gig of ram for my pleasure network wired
one one Toshiba laptop for work, and surfing wireless.
I honestly prefer wired connection.

I don't even have high speed yet, much less wireless. I refuse to pay the cable company tons of money in the first place. Qwest doesn't have their "stuff" together and therefore high speed is not available in my area yet. When I do get high speed though, I may get wireless AND network the PC and ancient laptop so they can use the same printer.

Jdog really knows how to use the camera to make things look good. LOL...
Just kidding folks....I have no idea..

I was doing a routine firmware update on my router this morning and BRICKED IT, arghhh $80 down the drain.

I just talked to one of my daughter's friends... the subject came up about internet access and she said "oh no, I don't have a phone line to my house, I use a cellular". ??? I asked if she used her cellular for the internet then and she said, "no, it just came with my laptop!"
It turns out, not knowing it, she's on a neighbor's wireless and no she's not blond, but she thought internet access came with her Dell wireless card! :*))
-
That's hilarious! My neighbors don't even know that I have a wireless network, but I know that they have one. I don't broadcast my SSID for that reason.
-
Hey TY, you should broadcast as freenet or something and encrypt it. I boosted my signal so it could reach 5 houses down just so noobs can try to connect..... some secret pleasures of mine. ::)
-
Speaking of wireless networks, gotta share this with you.
My router finally gave out. I should have known something was up....I was using an 11.b model. Apparently it was on borrowed time for quite a while. I think I bought it back in the fall of 2001. :o After doing some trial & error troubleshooting, I figured it was time to put it to pasture. I went to Best Buy & told the guy when I bought it and he said they typically last about 2 years...guess I was lucky. Like a toaster, coffee maker, grass trimmer, or any other piece of equipment, routers have a finite life.
Just installed an 11.G.....back in the internet saddle. O0 Sly, smooth and fast. It's all good. 8)

Yeah, well we have some pretty crafty people here in the Bay Area so I try not to tempt them too much. I would have even added Mac Address filtering, but it was screwing up my TiVo connection.
I will say that even I know how to hack an encrypted network with the right tools, so I know there has to be a couple high school kids around here that could probably do it while they read their dad's Cisco manual.

A mac is a great idea! We've got 3 powerbooks and a g5 laptop

I run a Dynalink 1025W ADSL Modem/4 port Wireless router. The wireless LAN is a 128bit WEP encryption.
I can usually pick up around 5-10 other wireless networks in my area. Like champ, I have considered buying a Booster to broaden the range I can get from it, but really no need. My ADSL speed runs at 1500mb p/s down and 256kb p/s up. Wired LAN is much quicker than Wireless but only minimally.
BTW, I was wondering. What are some of the speeds that ADSL or Cable High Speed run at in North America? In Australia, the fastest speed one can get is ADSL2+ which runs a maximum of 27mb p/s

Got myself a Macbook Pro here....Sweet ass machine....And its a year and half old now. Apple just dropped new ones today. Even better.

I've been wireless for the most part for about 2 years, in my travels most places just have wireless so thats what I'm stuck with. I like the lan lines they don't seem to have the drop off that you get with wireless.
