Title: Have you guys been to pandora.com?
Post by: Cameron on January 31, 2008, 07:31:15 PM
Whats up all!

I stumbled upon www.pandora.com some time ago.  For those of you who haven't heard of it, its like a free customized radio... its really cool, I listen to it 24/7.

So what you do is put in a song or artist that you like, and it analyzes that song or artist, and plays only music that is similar in styles according to a bunch of different qualities about the music (i.e. southern rap roots, experimental jazz tempo, etc).  So, theoretically, its all music you like.  In practice, its MOSTLY music you like, and when it plays music you don't like, and you can tell it "I dont like this song" and adjusts accordingly... very different!

Anyway, those of who listen to music on the computer, check it out.  I found it to be a lot better than the online radio stations, with crappy bit quality and ads.  (no audio ads in pandora, which is nice)

If you try it out, be patient if they play a lot of music you don't like--sometimes it just doesn't seem to get it right.  So play around and try a different song.  The jazz is really good, for example.

It might even make reading through my endless rants a bit more tolerable :)

btw this may sound like a plug, but I'm in no way affiliated with them... lol

Pandora is a cool site.  I also like Slacker (http://www.slacker.com).  I actually decided to use Slacker instead of Pandora.

Pandora is fantastic...I've found quite a bit of new music using it.

If any of you use and enjoy the service try http://openpandora.googlepages.com/  for Pandora without having to use a web browser.

Sweet, thanks. I need music in the background while I'm working.
I usually listen to the Rippingtons when I'm plugging away at the desk, but it'll be cool to be introduced to similar artists.

Same here.  So far I've created 3 different stations with varied types of music.  This is really cool.

I'm completely hooked ...   Created 6 stations and haven't turned it off since enrolling.  I've been rating lots of songs to get my stations fine-tuned and it's working.   I'm going to end up buying many more CDs as result of this, but that's ok.

I've been using Pandora for a while now, and it is awesome.  I don't know how many stations I have, probably 10 or so, including 1 just for classic Christmas songs.  I'll have to try that other site, Tyler -- never heard of it.

Seems that neither Pandora or Slacker work outside of the U.S.  :(

Glad people like it!  I wonder why pandora won't work outside the US.  That's too bad.

There are portals and things on the web that make it so no one can see your IP and such, I wonder if that would work.  Let me ask my tech buddies ab that.

From the Pandora site,

Dear Pandora Visitor,

We are deeply, deeply sorry to say that due to licensing constraints, we can no longer allow access to Pandora for listeners located outside of the U.S. We will continue to work diligently to realize the vision of a truly global Pandora, but for the time being we are required to restrict its use. We are very sad to have to do this, but there is no other alternative.

 :Xo! :Xo! :Xo!

Ok, someone outside the us try going to http://www.texasproxy.com/surf.php?q=http://www.pandora.com  .   (Don't click on the link, only copying and pasting it works for some reason)

This should make pandora think you're from Texas.  Does it work?

BTW, this shouldn't qualify as illegal--nothing wrong with trying to surf the internet anonymously.

Believe me, I know about Proxy Servers. I get in trouble at work because sometimes I use them to go onto Ebay. ;D

Thanks for the link Cameron but for some reason when putting the link into the search bar, it just comes up with the Pandora website but nothing else appears. No links to radio config or anything.

Oh well, I'll just stick to my iPod.

Shoot.

Well, at least you can download music without fear of lawsuits from the RIAA, since you're out of their jurisdiction.  >:D
