So, I got some new (used) golf clubs tonight. Now I need to figure out how to swing them!!! LOL :-\
If any of you see a bald guy hacking away at the range, it's a chance it will be me. I'm going to take some lessons before I attempt to get serious with golfing. I already know that I have a screwed up swing since I played baseball for so many years. Though, I can hit my irons straight most of the time. It's just trying to use my driver and woods that really screw me up.
Any other golfers out there?
-
I've made an attempt to play golf. Tell ya what, I'll be at the clubhouse drinkin a beer. When you're done you can come join me. Me playing golf is not pretty.
-
We used to play golf, drink, all the time as Cops. Many fond memories from Law Enforcement Golf Outings... hehe
-
Much fun!!! Alcohol and golf are a great mixture. Difficult to find a course that will let you do both at the same time.
-
we have a course hear that lets you order it from your cart. and they deliver it to the next tee box that you get to. my dad calls it" cow pasture pool " i tried going with my stepdad. it was UGLY. but everyone at work plays and they ask me sometimes so i reckon i should try it again.
-
I've played off and on since I was about 10 or 11...never got really serious...and if you were to take the number of times I've played divided by the number of years since I first played...it might average to once a year.
I've actually spent more time at the driving range than on courses.
I will say--and Tyler, listen up--I've watched the pro opens and what not where they have the "2 minute tips" at the commercial breaks. But without a doubt there is a video out there called "The Little Green Video" put out by Harvey Pennick that helped my game more than any other advice I've seen or been told.Â
It features Tom Kite and Ben Crenshaw giving a range of tips that take you from the drive to the green and everything in between....including sand traps. Great, Great stuff.

Thanks for the tip! I'll have to look for a copy for my dad an me. I'm going to go down and schedule a lesson today or tomorrow. I can hit my irons straight and far now and my short game is pretty good. I just can't hit my darn driver.

I've got a few customers that have been asking me to go golfing. There are also a few guys at work (including my boss) that are into it. So, I decided to borrow my stepdad's clubs and I'll give it a go once the weather warms up a little.
-
I used to wonder why anyone would enjoy hitting a small ball with a crooked stick, then finding it (sometimes), then hitting it again. It took me a couple of times, but being outside with some good friends drinking some cocktails and smoking some cigars, is a pretty good time, especially when some of those friends are members of some nice country clubs.
I've also closed and started some business on the golf course.

My whole family has golfed all our lives (I've been playing for 27 yrs). A few yrs ago, me, my two brothers, and my dad went to Scotland for a 2 week golf/scotch/beer trip. One of the funnest trips I've ever been on. Drinking with the Scots was a riot. Outside of being with wife & kids, no place I'd rather be than the golf course. I'll echo the sentiments about golf & alcohol. They definitely mix. Our home course has a great bar, cool bartenders, and a few regulars that can hold their own in a drinking contest (me included). If you're ever in the Sacramento area, look me up.
As far as golf advice, my biggest tip is relaxing & having fun. I've played my best golf this year (index back down to a 4), mainly as a direct result of relaxing, drinking a few cocktails during the course of the round, and not concentrating on the result, rather focusing on the process. Another piece of advice Tyler ... ditch the driver if you're having problems hitting it. Most average players get more distance (and accuracy) with a 3 or 5 wood. Distance gained because of hang time and accuracy based on the fact that more backspin means less sidespin (hooks & slices). Lastly, don't buy name brand clubs (Taylor made, Titleist, Ping) unless you get an incredible deal. I got custom fitted for a brand of irons by a guy that I now buy my equipement from exclusively and my irons cost me only $220 (incl. shipping)!!!! Any other golf questions, I'd love to lend a hand. My fees are reasonable (beer).
By the way, I just bought the HeadBlade, Headslick, and Headlube matte finish in prep for the post-holiday shave. Can't wait for the new Schro to surface!!!!!
-
Thanks for the advice Schro! I live in the Bay Area, so I'll have to head over to Sac Town one of these days and trade you some beer for a couple pointers.
-
You're welcome. I grew up in Alameda and my wife & I lived in San Ramon/Dublin until June 200 when we moved up here to Rocklin. Better schools, closer to Tahoe, better golf courses and quality of life. Still, tough to leave the Bay. I work out of my house about 90% of the time but still maintain an office in San Fran.
Whereabouts are you in the Bay?

I live in the South Bay, near San Jose. My wife and I like it here, but I know what you mean about a better quality of life out in Rocklin. I grew up in Redding, CA which probably has a similar feel that Rocklin has.
-
One of the friends that we've met in the 6+ years we've been in Rocklin actually grew up in that area (Anderson, I believe). He was always talking about it being more of a hick town (no offense meant). I've spent some time up in Redding, and actually go to Fall River Mills for an annual golf trip (talk about remote!). Anyway, Rocklin has actually become quite a little bedroom community. I'm not sure that it's suburbia or bust for me, but it would take a heck of a lot for us to move from here.
Can't say I've played all that many courses in the South Bay. I did play Riverside once, a long time ago. Funny, I was just imagining a SBG golf outing. Can you image a bunch of drunken bald guys getting their domes rubbed by some hot beer cart girls? Chuckle Chuckle.
By the way, I was told that one of our beer cart girls is an ex-stripper. To that I replied, "No such thing....once a stripper, always a stripper".

HA!! How right you are schro!!

has anyone seen the golf cart part of the movie JACKASS. i see a sequel.

She has a gorgeous figure and not much of a personality. I'm sure she has some type of personality, but it's probably hard to show it when everyone's undressing her with their eyes.

Yeah, Redding is a hick town, but it has changed quite a bit over the last couple of years.
The Fall River Mills course is a nice course. My dad plays there a couple times a year.

All have applied to me except #6 & #16. I gotta draw the line on the ball retriever.

INTERESTING PHENOMENA.....
I encountered when I moved to Fort Lauderdale, FL from the L.A. area in So. California. Some of you may be aware of it.
I grew up in So. Calif. Played quite a bit of golf and generally opted for the 9-hole option. I just never liked being on a course for 18 holes, so my buddies and I would do the front 9 or back nine. (The very first course ever carved out in America [Catalina Island], you go twice around...just from different tee positions).
Anyway, I always thought it was a given and left the 18 holes to the die hards. Well, I move to South Florida and the subject of golf came up at my new place of business and I suggested we do 9 holes. And everybody looked at me like I was from another planet. "9 holes?......what the...?"
Is anyone else aware of this? Anybody know where the demarkation line is here in the U.S.? Here in Denver the 9-hole option is alive and well.

Head to Palm Springs and it's mostly 18 hole playing. You would think that with 130+ courses in one area that there would be more 9 hole playing, but I guess the demand is there for 18 holes.
-
There is a reason why they called it "golf" not "par," all the other four-letter words were taken ;D
-
Golf in Palm Springs in awesome. I try and go in April, usually for 4-5 days. We golf 18-36 holes per day.
-
GOLF stands for "Gentlemen Only, Ladies Forbidden".....except for ex-stripper beer cart girls.
Palm Springs....make sure you make a side trip to Palm Desert. "The Beer Hunter" right on Hwy 111 is a great sports bar. I've played a lot of golf down there. Let me know if you need any further info.

Yeah, Palm Desert is where most of the courses are. I tend to lump the two places together.
I heard about "The Beer Hunter" when I was there at Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, I was already at the Yard House, another great place for beer, when I heard about it.
-
Another great restaurant is the "Benihana" style (i.e. cook at your table) restaurant in the big Marriott resort in Desert Hot Springs. I think it's called Mikato, but I'm not 100% sure, it's been a few years since our annual guys' trip fell apart (guys were getting to petty & cheap....turned into women unfortunately). The food is outstanding, and their "Tokyo Tea" (Long Island-style drinks made with Midori) get two thumbs way up in the Schro drink rating system.
Courses I really enjoyed down there include the Norman Course @ PGA West, Desert Willow (both courses), and the Landmark Golf Club. Also, there's a Gary Player signature course in Rancho Mirage that (I think) is called Mission Hills North. Fun track as well.
Fore!!!
