Post by: PBurke on December 07, 2006, 10:21:23 AM
well to start off. next wednesday i will be attempting to quit the worst habit a person can have. SMOKING. after that is accomplished i plan to use the extra money to join a gym and get healthier. tired of getting winded doin simple things. i will be away from almost everything ( for work) next week. from the 13th thru the 20th. but gonna use that time to try and kick this smoking thing. will let yall know how it goes/went when ever i can.

Way to go, Paul.  I know what it's like to quit smoking, but I did it.  One thing that stuck in my head BIG TIME was a doctor that said, "Smoking is simply committing suicide on the installment plan."

No offense or judgement against current smokers.  That's just what worked for me.

Way to go Paul!

It's also good to smoke if you have kids.  They say that kids are more likely to smoke if their parents smoke.  My wife attributed her smoking to her dad smoking.  She has since quit.  I gave her the choice, stop smoking and we'll have babies, or keep smoking and we won't.  She quit cold turkey.

:D Hail, Paul, well met. Best of luck on quitting. I was surrounded by smokers when I was a kid; it made life miserable for me. Everyone did it in the 50s and 60s, except the uncool. There was no attraction to the habit for me: I've had asthma all my life. There is nothing better than to be able to draw breath; anything that impedes that is anathama. My grandfather and mother-in-law both died of smoking related diseases, emphysema and lung cancer respectively. When, in her fifties, my mother was told she would suffer phloebitis and eventual amputations of her feet and legs, she went cold turkey, threw her unfiltered Chesterfields into the toilet, and thereby extended her life by almost thirty years. So, work on the nicotine addiction first, and then consider the weight. Godspeed, Professor Melon

Seriously, I'm dreading lent this year!  A while back I made a pact to give up meat all together for the upcoming lent.  I may need some support on that when the time comes.  I’m huge carnivore.
Thought I would share that.

Yeah, I once wound up on a blind date with a die-hard vegan. I basically used your line Paul.  I almost got murdered (interesting that a vegan who would not kill an animal almost killed me).

Vegans just flat out don't make any sense to me.  I love meat, but I understand it may not be for everybody and can respect not eating certain meats.  I don't understand how someone can live without eating any animal product, no cheese, milk, eggs or leather coats. ???

I have two things to say to Vegans...

I didn't claw my way to the top of the food chain to eat vegetables

and last but certainly not least...

If we aren't supposed to eat animals, why are they made out of meat?

Vegans are stuck way back in Genesis chapter 3:

"To Adam [God] said, "Because you…ate [the forbidden fruit] from the tree…Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your life…you will eat the plants of the field."

They forget (or don't know) that we have a DIVINE SANCTIONING  ;) to eat things "with a face" from chapter 9 and beyond:

"Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth…Everything that lives and moves will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything."

Who am I to disobey God and turn down a nice, juicy 16 oz bone-in prime rib  ;D

Ever had blackened prime rib?.........MMMMmmmmMMMMmmmmmm!!

Hey Paul,

I noticed that the thread had gone dead, but I read your goal about quitting smoking and I wanted to say it is a really good goal.  I have heard that there is a surgery you can get that is fairly inexpensive and effective.  Here is what I could find that sounded like the thing I have heard about:

http://www.ltalaser.com/faq.html

I've heard from a lot of people that this has been very effective.  I have heard from a few that it didn't work for them, but I suppose that is a risk of any surgery like this.

Maybe something to look into, but quitting is definitely a fight worth fighting.

:) Glad to hear your dad's on the mend, Paul. As to the weight: avoid the killer combination--oil, sugar, and carbs. I cannot bring myself to forbidding beer. You've got to commit to the change--it's not just a diet for a month or two--now, because if you don't you'll be stuck with the weight for the duration, and that will lead to disabilities in middle age. Since I have never smoked (have had asthma since childhood), it is harder for me to appreciate a smoker's addiction. My grandfather, mother-in-law, best buddy's father, and two uncles all died of lung cancer, clutching cigarettes to the bitter end. I know reason is not sufficient. Have you seen those photos of a smoker's lungs? Perhaps the idea of getting entirely clean may help: clean head, clean lifestyle, clean lungs. I hope you succeed in quitting. Professor Melon

Hey Paul, hang in there. I was never a smoker (the occasional stogie on the golf course), so I can't offer any advice on breaking that habit. Though, I read somewhere that it takes three weeks to "develop" a habit. I have no idea if that's true, or if that logic applies to breaking a habit or the chemical effects of nicotine. Needless to say, good luck.

How's dad doing?

Good luck bro.  Soda's were really hard for me.  I don't know why.  It was almost just as hard as giving up smoking.  Weird.  But it's been about 2 months now.

It's the high fructose corn syrup in the sodas.  It's very addicting.  The body doesn't recognize it as sugar and doesn't break it down as efficiently.  But it definitely makes you crave sweets more.  Sadly, it is a main ingredient in most of the pre-packaged foods we eat.

dad has been home for a week and seems to be doing really well. as for me, i am still fat and smoking.

Hey bro, first off...I'm glad to hear your dad is doing better.  I wish him speedy recovery.

About your habits...Don't give up man.  Just keep at.  One thing I found that worked better for me was trying one at time.  If you try to give up everything at once it's kind of like getting disciplined when you were a little boy doing something bad.  I hope that made some sense.  But anyway, what saying is start with one habit you want to kick or work on.  My strong opinion would be the smoking.  Keep at it.  Because I am one to tell you it is one of the hardest things in the world.  I may only be 30 but I smoked from the age of 16 until a little over 29.  The day my son was born I gave it up.  I probably tried to quit smoking in all those years about a "gazillion" times...If you know what I mean.  I tried everything too.  I mean everything.  There's no telling how much money I blew on trying to quit.  But one thing I found when I did quit was that if I would treat myself a little more with other things it made it easier to kick the habit.  For instance, I was just like you for about a year before I quit.  I wanted to drop a few pounds and quit smoking at the same time.  So I was putting myself through misery trying to cut back on what I liked to eat and my portions plus trying to cut back on the smoking.  It was just too much at once for me.  I could never stick with it.  I love food and all kinds.  So it's hard for me to try to cut anything out.  So finally when my son was born I made my mind up right there that I was ready to give it another try.  But this time I stopped worrying about the fitness part of it and just concentrated on kicking the smoking.  During the first 6 months or so I just continued to eat whatever I wanted and pretty much whenever I wanted.  Yes, I put on quite a few more pounds but I was, in my mind, rewarding myself for not smoking.  Then once I figured I had the smoking under control, which was almost a year after quitting, I started to work on my fitness.  Which I still don't go all out for because I love food too much.  I just try to cut back on how much I eat now and get enough exercise to maintain my body.  I'm not looking to be "buff"...I just want to be fit enough so that I can get into the fire department.  So anyway, I hope some of this might be of some help bro.  Just remember...One thing at a time.  Start with the smoking.  Some people might think it's unhealthy to let yourself go while trying to give up smoking...But the way I look at it is like this...I can always at anytime, as long as my body is able, down the road start to exercise to drop some weight but I can't go back and reverse the damage of smoking.

ok, let's revisit this topic.

i quit smoking three weeks ago. only six months late, but hey, better late than never. now i just need some motivation to get my lazy butt up and do some exercise. have gotten way too lazy in the last decade. maybe after i feel better i can try something. ( feeling a little crappy this week )  if anyone has any ideas, i would be glad to hear them. but be warned, it will have to be better than "GET YOUR BUT UP AND GO" cause i have a million excuses for that one. haha at least i do know that they are excuses, not real reasons.  so throw your ideas at me.

First off brother, let me say congrats on quitting smoking.  Keep at man because it can come calling back.  Don't get discouraged.  It's been over a year for me now and I love looking back at how long the time period keeps getting.  As far as exercising I don't know what advice I can give you since I'm just as lazy when it comes to that.  I had mentioned in the fitness thread a while back about wanting to start working out a bit to get fit for going into the fire department.  But if I'm being honest here, I haven't started doing a damn thing.  I guess we're both sort of in the same boat.  I know I need to drop a few pounds but I love eating and hate exercising.  What do you do, huh?  Good job on putting the smokes down though.  O0

Remember that chick with the blonde crewcut? Susan Powter? I always remember her slogan and it makes perfect sense....just move.....do something...anything..

I think we all get into that "all or nothing" mindset...try going to the gym once or twice a week...straight up, that's all you'll expect of yourself...do only weights or do only cardio...just get a small rhythm...let it build up...going from one extreme to another is too much!

Do the same with eating....cut out sweets and processed foods....only perimiter shop at the grocery store....sounds funny, only eat food from the earth (not processed)...have to have cookies?..... eat only homemade ones...and not 10 of them! Homemade is always better than store bought!

I know I'm rambling, just some advice,,,if you hate it ignore it... I'll just go back to my corner now! ;)

Good luck dude!

Thanks dude...

it's kinda of the misse's credo also, I should have posted a full body shot of her...you'd see, she looks great after having her first baby at 38...

the avatar shot is 8 months after she delivered our little guy!

No the point is you NEVER will miss the extra attention, doesn't matter if you're married or not, getting a look or comment or small flirt is flattering to BOTH the dude and his girl.....IF they are secure in their relationship!

My wife always says a certain waitress has a crush on me...especially when she sees me being 'daddy" with little Dre'! She always gives me a hard time...it's fun, no big! man....little kids are like puppies though...chick magnets!!.......

JUUUSSSTTT kidding, well not really , but kind of! ;)

she said "what the "f" are you talking about?! And WHAT is that going to do for you? You're so lame!

Take it whatever way you can get it.  Heck, I'd gladly have my gall bladder removed if I thought it would help me lose 15 pounds.   ;D

another good thing out of all this is that i am learning to eat lower fat and more fruit and veggies. not a typical cajun diet for sure.

I've been using this stuff for the past couple of weeks -- too soon to know how much effect, if any, it is having.  It seems to be marketed more to women, and is not a magic bullet by any means, but I figured it was worth a try.
