Has anyone here had or looked into Lasik surgery? A friend of mine looked into it about a year ago but turned out not to be a good candidate for it due to his particular eye problem. I asked the opthamologist about it when I had my last appointment last year, but he told me that it isn't usually done on people who are under 40, because the early 40s is when vision usually begins to deteriorate and it's best to wait until things stabilize before doing the surgery. I'm just thinking ahead a bit. Even if I ended up needing glasses for reading when I'm older, it would be worth it to me not to have to wear contacts full time. They can be a pain to deal with.

My best friend in LA had Lasick surgery done at the age of 27 to correct his vision problems. He now has near perfect 20/20 vision after wearing Coke bottle glasses his whole life. Recovery time was minimal, around 3 days. I think the procedure itself was around $8K and took around 1-2 hours.
My brother in law is also considering getting the procedure done.

would love to get it done...but REAL worry of them doing BOTH eyes at once....
Yea, I heard after 40 is a better time, your eyes stop changing..at least that is till you need bifocals..but that's usually in your 60's I think...

My wife had it done a couple of years ago at age 34. Loves it and has had no problems. Personally, I don't want it. Her's took maybe half an hour for both eyes and about $3000. She saved up from her pre-school teaching job. Do your research and find someone with a good reputation. Your eyes are precious gifts!

Find a doctor who does LOTS of them, and uses the latest technology if you must do it. Eyes never stop changing it seems, and there isn't an age I know of when they stop changing. Razor, forget it about not minding glasses for reading, etc., it's the pits to be working on some small project outside in the summer and those damn things slipping, getting sweated out, etc. Sure contacts are a twice daily effort, but like shaving versus hair transplants, it's reversable, it's not an operation w/ all the attendant problems, and sweat rarely causes problems. The old senator, Everett Dirkson was wisely said, "The eyes are the windows of the soul." Don't do anything to endanger that, only if it's essential for the preservation of sight.

razor...i know a few people who had the lasik surgery done. the only complaints that i received regarding the surgery was their eyes "dried out" more since having the surgery. i'm very accustomed 2 wearing glasses though......been wearing glasses since i was 9 years old. however... it would be kool 2 have 20/20 vision.

I've worn glasses since I was 4. I wear contacts most of the time now, but they can be uncomfortable at times, especially when I'm having an allergy flare-up. It would just be nice to be free of corrective lenses.

I've been in contacts since high school and see no real problem. My wife had it done because she was unable to wear contacts because of he astigmatism. And she was sick of her glasses. She loves it and doesn't regret it one bit. Her eyes do dry out though pretty frequently and she keeps those little single dose drops on her nightstand. That's the first thing she does before she even gets out of bed.
For her, it was money well spent. My contacts are fine with me. I'm not to keen on having my cornea peeled back and a laser burning my iris. Thats just me though. A lot of people love it.

This is a near and dear subject for me. I had it done 5 years ago (I was 36), both eyes at the same time. Took about 20 minutes, and cost about $3,000. I had it done on a friday evening, and went in the next morning for an exam and had 20/15 vision. Man, you wouldn't believe how it changes your life until you actually do it.
I didn't have any complications, except for dry eyes for about 3 months after. I just had to keep eye drops with me for awhile.
Also, regarding age, my Dr said that it doesn't really matter when you have it done, because the need for reading glasses is going to happen anyway, since thats caused by a deterioration of the eye. When I hit 40, I started to need them, even though the lasik fixed my far way vision..
Like saintc said, do your homework and find someone who has done thousands of them with the latest technology.
I highly recommend it, and would do it again in a heartbeat.

Oakley is right up to a point, but when you need the "cheaters" it's a lot easier, at least it was for me, to go to multi-focus lenses, I mean it's like getting new eyeballs! See distance, see close, just like the young f_rts w/ no need for "reading" glasses! (Face it, they really make you look old and you're always losing them!) There apparently is a new deal coming, my wife is having cataracts removed and they're going to use multi-focus technology and because it's a total replacement her vision truly will never change again! The technology is always improving so there's no rush.

I wear glasses most of the time (contacts for certain sports) and am comfortable with them. Both my brothers have had lasik with great results. I considered it, but have passed on it to date. I may in the future, but it's not really a priority for me at this time. To saint's point, as the technology improves, it might be in my best interest to delay anyway.

HOLY SHIZZAH 8K?! I am so glad I'm Canadian! I was looking at it yesterday and it was 435 and I think it's covered by my insurance should I choose it.

I'm 42 and still dont need glasses but to be honest i think a cool pair of glasses might enhance the sly look.I'm just thinking how good sun glasses look with the bald look.

I know a ton of people that have done it and they all love it! I'm hoping to do it this year since I'm apparently a perfect candidate for it. My vision hasn't changed for around 5 years.

My brother's fiance had Lasik done last year and has loved it ever since. She had no dry eye issues whatsoever. Every time I see or talk to her, she encourages me to do it. I recently had my annual vision check-up and my Dr. told me that even though I have astigmatism in one eye, I'd be a perfect candidate for it. Now, I just need to save up for it! I've worn glasses since the 1st grade and contacts since 7th grade. I honestly don't mind my contacts anymore since I wear daily disposables. I just throw em away at night and pop in a fresh pair each morning. To anyone who wears contacts I highly recommend daily disposables. One thing that makes me hesitant is that I heard--somewhere--that, while it dramatically improves vision, it significantly weakens yer eyes so that were you to get popped in the eye with a racquet ball or tennis ball or dodge ball (or whatever) it could cause SERIOUS damage.
Anyone hear this or know anything about it?
