Ok...once again, kudos to Tyler for lighting the fire under my caboose!!
It's my second day on Nutrisystem and today will be my first day back to the gym since the end of August. Weighed in yesterday at 253. On my 45th Birthday (April 9) I'd like to be 40 lbs lighter (213).
When I get down to 238 I shave the plate!!! This is in fulfillment of a deal my wife and I made.Â
We have friends and family coming into town to go skiing in February and March. So this will be a good impetus to stay on track. Being diligent I should be able to lose 20 lbs for the February group....and another 10 or so for the March group. Now, diligent for me apart from the obvious eating and workout requirements is staying away from something I love very much---BEER and various other adult beverages. I'm a good ol' Irishman....and it's very social and recreational for me. But it is my way of drawing a line in the sand and saying, "Man, what is more important for the next 4 months?"
Guess that's it for now.
-
Good luck robmeister. where you going skiing at? I lived in Leadville, so i have been to a few of the resort areas in Co. i miss the mountains, BAD. so for now i will just have to hear about them from you. haha 8)
-
Awesome goal Robmeister! Let us know what we can do to keep you on track so we can see you with a "real" shaved head here soon.
-
Well, by golly, 1 lb down and 14 to go to shave the plate!!! Went to the gym yesterday as planned and it felt great just walkin through the door and grabbin a towel.
...where you going skiing at? I lived in Leadville, so i have been to a few of the resort areas in Co.
We live in Littleton and live closest to Winter Park...Loveland may be about as close. The March group will be staying in Winter Park. When my dad comes in February we'll probably do Winter Park as well (I'll be sporting the new chromedome!)
Thanks, Tyler for the encouragement.
-
congats bro. keep it up.
-
So whatta ya think?.....I got the intimidation thang goin' [for when my daughter starts dating]Â ;)
The chromedome will be a good fit, huh?
-
i'm skirred. haha not really. i reckon i need a new picture now. man i hate cameras.
-
Down another LB this morning!!
13 LBs to go to shave the plate!!
-
i reckon i need a new picture
Not no mo....nice pic.....nice outfit.....NICE NOGGIN!
-
Rob, I see your update as of today. Congrats on your progress! ;D
-
Thanks for noticing!
-
OK....kinda plateau'd after the first 2LBs ???
But I'm gettin' in the gym groove. Got my weights and cardio dialed in and my tracking sheets set up (big part of fitness thrust). Finishing off with a tan at each visit helps too.
Have a juicer, so I may do a juice fast/flush. Speed me up to the shavemeister!!!
-
So whatta ya think?.....I got the intimidation thang goin'
Boy...that is an intimidating shot of me!
Funny how when you change pictures in yer profile....it can foul up a posting...if not an entire THREAD.
-
OK.....the blizzard had us land-locked for several days....couldn't go to the gym. A little cabin feavor and I took liberties in the eating department as well.
So my plateau will be extended, folks....still have 13 lbs to go until the shave.
-
Hey Robmeister, If you put the weight back on (God forbid), do you have to regrow your hair? Might be an incentive to stay on the diet .
-

No. I'm keeping it buzzed pretty stinkin' short. And it's DEFINITELY an insentive. The holidays are not the best time to watch what yer eating.
Don't know where I heard/read it but it's a solid maxim: "It's not how diligent you are between Thanksgiving and New Years.....It's how diligent you are between New Years and Thanksgiving."
-
Are you back on track? If you are like me and not back to work yet, you should have time, although you have been shoveling a hell of a lot more snow than me. I finally got my snowblower out for the first time on New Years Day.
-
Did get a lot of snow shoveling in....but I do want to get one of them blowers....I'm the only one on the block without one, damnit.
Just started back on the track this week....luckily through the holidays I didn't gain...so I'm still 13 lbs away from shavin' the noggin.
By the way, I like the shiny look you got there in your pic....how'd ya get that?....what'd ya use?
-

Hey dude, does Nutrisystem really work? I need to loose some weight too!! I'v tried all kinds of diets with no success, I can't afford a gym membership right now, and when I could I was always on the road, so I had no time to go anyway. I wish that the big truck stop chains would add a gym to their facility and you could buy a membership, that you could use at any of their truck stops. If you or anyone else could offer some advise it would be greatly apreciated. thanks.

I am surprised with Nutrisystem...as it is an OLD name in dieting...like Jenny Craig & Weight Watchers. But they have come to the cutting edge of reality and practicality.
I think Nutrisystem would be great for the road, good buddy. >:D
The stuff doesn't need to be refridgerated. Just need either boiling water or a microwave. And it's not a carrot and celery stick and rice cake type thing. The portions are pretty small but everything is fortified with soy protein and allows for a fair amount of fat. fat + protein = FILLING.
For instance...the dessert cookies and chocolates have 9 grams of protein in just them. And the carbs are very balanced.

Just don't call me a good buddy, but you can call Dave ( Drakare ) a good budd all you want. :*)) ;D

Ok...it's been a while since visiting the ol' fitness plan....
Today my wife and I did a spinning class (stationary cycling)...
It was BRUTAL...and great HEAVY music (Cinderella, AC/DC, Guns & Roses, Motley Crue)...
Think I'm gonna try doing that 3 times a week and then add in weight training somehow.
I'm glad I'm still not waiting to lose the 15lbs in order to shave the bean....I have lost 6 lbs.
I do love being one of the few bald dudes at the gym......feel like I'm accountable to lift more weight. W3!ght !i#t
-
Good job, Rob! Remember becoming out of shape didn't happen overnight in one gaint step, so be patient in getting back into shape. O0 It happens one step at a time
-
Ok...haven't been able to hit a groove with my plan above of 2/16.
But that's still the plan as far as getting exercise.
The funny thing is....I've been eating (and drinking) anything that comes to mind, whenever it comes to mind since 2/16....and I've actually lost a couple pounds. :/O :D
So I'm at 247....9lbs away from my original fitness goal to shave the noggin...having lost 6 lbs (without really trying).
But I'm gonna try a new program that has only been around a couple years. It's about healthy cleansing strategies that keep the gastrointestinal, lymphatic, etc... systems flushed and clean of toxins through natural/herbal treatments.
Apparently, when your body releases toxins, it metabolizes fat more readily.
You may have heard of it...IsoGenix. It's been getting great press and great endorsements from top homeopathic medical professionals.
http://www.nblackmore.isagenix.com/
It's sold only through independent distributors.
If I pay the $35.00 fee to become a distributor, I get a big discount on the products.
Anyway, gonna give it a go...and if it works as advertised, I'll be a walking billboard and might promote the stuff as a distributor (little side stream of income).
I'll keep you posted....I'd really like to lose 40 lbs, man.
-
Rob,
Keep up the good work, no matter what you do. But one thing I am wondering with the different diets is how much long term success there is. From what I know, the most successful way to lose weight is to make a lifestyle change. I'm sure you know that. Here's an example. On Friday, a sales rep who sells to the carpet store that I work at bought us all lunch of greasy fast food from a independent burger place. I had some really good fish and chips. I am glad that I had that. But I also made sure that the next morning I went to the gym and packed a healthy lunch the next day. Despite having this fried food, I have still lost weight. I just know I can't eat like that every day. So maybe an occasional beer might not be too bad if occasional is not daily!
-
So maybe an occasional beer might not be too bad if occasional is not daily!
I like that plan!!! O0
Seriously, I'm at a point where I can pretty much eat (AND DRINK) anything I want right now, and I'm not gaining weight.
When I get down to the weight I'm after (200 to 210), there's a lot of leeway for maintaining that weight.
I've done cleanses/detoxes before (including Colon Cleansing)....I'm not talking "diets" or "fitness challenges".....but CLEANSING/DETOXIFYING...
and it is such a drastic and revolutionary improvement in physical, mental, emotional (yea SPIRITUAL) well being AND ENERGY, that the "groove" is hard to sabatage....and maintenance becomes a matter of perpetuating FEELING AWESOME.
My last cleanse/detox was sabataged by SEVERE disappoints (and depression) that converged and got me all outa sorts last year. So now that those issues have been successfully surmounted, I'm excited for this cleansing/detoxifying experience with these new, cutting-edge strategies and products. O0

thats some spiritual stuff right there. All true. Go Brother, Rock On O0

OK....well I lost the 15 lbs to fulfill the SLY bargain I made with my wife back in November. O0 (for those of you who give a sh**, that "bargain" is explained on page one of this thread)
Thank goodness we reworked the bargain and agreed that I shave in January....AHEAD of the bargain.
I'm goin' to the gym 4 times a week....doing 45 minutes of spinning (stationary cycling class) followed by weight training--cycling through 3 sets of body parts as follows:
Monday: Spinning + Biceps & Triceps
Wednesday: Spinning + Chest & Back
Friday: Spinning + Shoulders & Abs
Saturday: Spinning + Biceps & Triceps
As far as the meals and nutrition....the IsaGenix program is ROCKIN'!!!......but it does have me "on the wagon" until we meet in July.....so I'll be celebrating some significant weight loss, bruthas, when we meet O0
-
Congratulations!! O0 O0
Spinning is tough work. I've been doing some of it myself lately -- with my PT standing over me to make sure I don't slack off.
What is the IsaGenix program? I know you've probably posted about it before but I must have missed it. I'm trying to break another plateau.
Well done, bro!!! ;D ;D
-
What is the IsaGenix program?
Top of this page, brutha O0
Edit: Actually first mentioned it on page three (2nd from the bottom - March 10th)

Congrats weightlosingmiester!

Nice Brother! Congrats. I am a fan of the Stationary Bike as well. talk about a good way to relax. Working out is definitly my Anti-Drug (R^!
-
Congrats bro. I'm thinking of purchasing a stationary bike myself. Is it just as good of a way to burn fat as jogging is? I don't really like going and running. I wanted something for the inside so I don't have to worry about weather and whatever.

Yeah...I personally need the accountability of an instructor barking out different things to do.....keeps it interesting and challenging.

8) Way to go!!!

Job well done there RM. Congratulations O0

Tell you the truth, I have found myself to be the strictest instructor that I can have. add the motivation of a little Drowning Pool in the headset, good stuff right there O:O

Robmeister-- I read about the IsaGenix program and would like to pass this to you that I posted on Hot Cajun's Challenge. Sorry for the copy paste thing but too tired to type it all out again... Might wanna check it out though:
Guys, I have a book that I borrowed from a friend who was dropping their mid section at a noticeable pace. The book is called YOU: On A Diet The Owner's Manual for Waist Management Written by Michael F. Roizen, MD and another MD. Anyway, I am 6'2 and around, well maybe 185 now and have never needed to diet, but I wanted to get rid of my love handles in the mid section. This book has you measure your waist and judge yourself that way, by inches and not weight. It explains how to eat healthy and lose your waist. One key I see is to eating nuts (be nice) for snacks and also before you eat your meal. I like almonds, so I throw a handfull in my mouth before every meal. It helps to fill you up quicker. Anyway, might be some good reading material if you want to lose some inches. Hot Cajun, this might be something to help you, the biggest loss comes in 2 weeks before you taper out to a slower decline.
Also let me add, I have no investments in this book... It is helping me become more sly, so who else would I share this info with!!
-
Thanks, Champ....IsaGenix does incorporate unsalted almonds as an appetite supressant.
I've lost 19 lbs.....down to 234 from 253.
Now, generally I lose a 1/2 inch in my waist for every 5 lbs.....but I have lost 3 inches in my waist......so the waist is the better indicator in my case as well.
Been doing the "One Day Off" every 2 weeks instead of every week...where I enjoy whatever the hell it is I've been missing/craving...including Ketel One martini's. O0
Since starting my bartending gig at Embassy Suites my spinning classes have gotten interupted.....but, being on my feet for 10 to 12 hours a day....huffin' beer kegs & rushin' around, I've actually lost about 6 lbs from that.
Hope to get down to 210 or below by July.
-
SEE !?! SEE !?! SEE !?!
Robmeister is living proof you CAN loose weight hanging around a bar all day !!!

-
That's funny right there....don't care who y'are
I gotta tell ya...it's a fun gig.....
If I could make $150,000 - $200,000 a year doin' it....I'd be a fulfilled SLY GUY.
-
R.M. it took me a minute, but I got through all of the replies to your post. I think the fact that you are working out and have a goal is great...I have been working out for 9yrs now and it feels great to leave them gym after working out, not to mention the stress you burn during...great job on your progress...patience is the key, too many people get discouraged when they don't get immediate results, it'll pay-off in the end, and the women love a sly fit guy!

I agree with you here 100%. It becomes less about the results, and more about getting in and having your own time... No cell, No Boss, No extra sh*t that you have to deal with. its all about getting your time in, your lift, and your own personal health, both mental and physical.
The Gym becomes like a Religion. Your Offering, Your own stripped down soul. Straight Up.
Now that is relaxing.

so did you ever reach your goal robbie? just curious if you held up your end of the bargain with the wifey. cause if you didn't she can make you grow it back and quit hanging out here. i mean you did have a deal with witnesses. well did ya?
-
Oh yeah....I fulfilled that back in the beginning of April by going from 253 to 238 (15 lbs, remember).
From there I went on to lose another 9 lbs.....for a total of 24lbs.
I've got plenty more to shed.....switching to night work's still got me topsy tervy on where to schedule other sh*t so I'm in sort of a "holding pattern" on the program.....keeping off (for the most part) what I lost.
-
just checking. :*))
-
Send your access poundage to me. I've always been too skinny. I tried for 3 years to bulk up and failed. My strenghth doubled, but my scrawny stature stayed the same. I do think its halarious when I'm at the gym waiting for some muscle head to get done with a machine and he finishes his set and says to me " you can drop it down to what ever you like" and I jump in and move the same amount of weight he had on with out breaking a sweat.
usually after he's been gruntin like a pig. Even had a good lookin lady tell me once, off to the side," you made him look like an ass!"
-
Congrats Rob!!!
-
OK....so my fitness goals and challenges have shifted to and fro....
Now I'm facing one of the fiercest challenges, fitness-wise, I've ever done because of the short time frame to train.......the Sheriff's Dept. physical fitness test.
The push-ups and sit-ups won't be a problem:
Have to do 13 push-ups in under a minute and 25 sit-ups in under a minute.
What will be tough is getting my 6'1", 240 lb carcass around a track 6 times in under 15 minutes.......that's 1.5 miles @ an average of 6.1 - 6.2 mph steady. For you lanky runner-types, that's probably a breeze.
My progress is good. I started on July 30th just doing 1 lap at the needed pace and the other 5 laps at a "sane" pace. Now I'm up to 4 laps at the necessary pace and 2 at the sane pace....but it is absotively, possolutely B-R-U-T-A-L!!!
I have two weeks to add the last two laps (test is on Sat. 9/22)....it'll be one of the hardest things I've ever done...but I think I just might pull it off, baby.
Maybe some of you experienced runners could help me hear (or point me to an article), but I found that I burned out more quickly when I came "outa the gate" right at the 6.1 - 6.2 mph. What I been doin is doin' a lap @ like 5.6, next lap @ 5.8, next @ 6.0, next @ 6.2......then the last 2 (theoretically at this point) @ 6.4 then 6.6-------that's an average of 6.1 mph.
(On the track I use a stop watch to hit the laps at the right times.)
Any thoughts?
Hey Paul....how'bout takin' this one to yer church prayer chain, man (really)
-
Just wanted to stop in and say good luck man. I know you can do it bro. I'll be praying for you man. Definitely post back up and let us know the outcome bro. If it doesn't go your way there is always other testings I'm sure. Don't give up if it's something you really want to do. I can probably benefit from those exact words, huh.
-
Good luck, Rob!!! O0
-
Got ya covered there RM. Also if endurance is the problem, need to be running LONGER distances (time & distance) at the "sane" pace. This should build the cardio-respiratory system up for the needed "push" when you need it.
-
Paul is exactly right. However, (not to be a smart azz) running is a lot easier if you drop a few lbs. Although my cardio is pretty damn good, I'm carrying a few extra lbs (too much good food these days) and the 4 milers are a little tougher than they should be.
If you have access to one, I would suggest running on a treadmill set at a 3.5 to 5.0 degree incline. If it's raining, I'll do treadmill work and always have it at some level of incline.
Good luck Rob.
-
Thanks, mates!
All excellent points.
-
you could just hang a beer on a stick and tape it to yer back. that way the beer hangs just out of reach and you could chase the beer. gives you some incentive. just a thought. j/k bro. keep at it. you will do fine. good luck

Just finished 4 laps in the allotted segment time (10:29)......gotta tag on those last 2 laps by this Friday. Those last two will be the longest 4 minutes, 30 seconds in my friggen life, man. :XX
I'm finding that when the body is S-C-R-E-A-M-I-N' to stop g@@4.....
yer heart and mind have to say "SHUT THE F**K UP !!!" b0x3r :x! :x!

Motivation....Iron Maiden's "Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner". Off their "Somewhere in Time" Album.
Great song for running.
Get it, Learn it, Live it.

Good going RM. for more motivation how about theme from Rocky? Also be sure to carb load on Thurs for the run Friday and give those muscles a rest on Thurs. Best of luck. Will be rootin' for ya.

Thanks, matey.......so you can carb load the day/night before? What?...oatmeal?...pasta?
Seems like pasta and breads would be more "simple" carbs that burn off too quickly. I have to have an empty stomach the day of.
I've been trying this stuff (see link) for super B vitamin energy....works GREAT!!!
http://www.5hourenergy.com/?gclid=CP7q68WfyI4CFSKgYAodCWjAAA
Yeah, I got my iPod loaded with 155 beats per minute paced motivational stuff like you hear in aerobics/spinning classes. Maybe I could add the Rocky theme for my last couple laps when I'll be DYING.
-
Concept is to avoid the protein instead brown rice, whole wheat, etc. Not that you'll need it, you'll kick a$$ by sheer motivation alone...just stay focused. You got it bro. O0
-
Okay, mateys....
As you can see by my little countdown thingy, my test is just around the corner (on Saturday). Today will be the first day I actually go the full 6 laps. Then I will rest tomorrow and carb up for Saturday.
Feelin' good. The Lord has allowed me not to get sick or injured (which I was slightly concerned about). Cleared the work schedule until next week, so I can stay laser focused, man.
I did add the Rocky theme to the end of my running set on my iPod. MAN!!....I forgot how cool that ol' tune really is! That will get me through the last lap when I really have to pour it on to the finish line. Good call, Paul. Too bad there's not the Philadelphia Art Museum next to the finish line. ;D

Best of luck to you RobM. Know at the back of your mind during the test what you are wanting and take it. Fear is the Mind Killer bro.

Actually you guys made me laught as it made me remember the best time I ever had on a military obstacle course run. It was in Pennsacola at AirCrew Candidate school. I beat my own best time by 2:30 minutes. I thought I had failed. All because I had a tremendous load of alcohol still in my system from massive partying the night before. SO YES. KETEL is CARBS.

Good luck tomorrow bro. You will be in my prayers. O0

Okay here's my progress on my pre-academy fitness thrust.
The solid blue line is the "goal line" of what I need to meet or beat in order to lose 35 lbs by January 21, 2008.
The magenta is my actual progress.
The dotted black line is the "trendline" trajectory of how well my actual progress is measuring up.
(https://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi176.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fw166%2Frobmeisterbrau%2Fweightloss.jpg&hash=2811f3cf496cb9078b988cc5d5b48371395d2d54)
So I'm down from 250 to 246 from last Wednesday.
As I've told some of ya....I have NOT been appointed to the academy...nor even offered a position...
Neither of which is a foregone conclusion....but by FAITH I have to start on this _NOW_ to get in my full 90 days of training in the event that I get that blessed offer. :@` :@`
-
Robmeister -- count on prayers!
I know how hard it is to lose weight. I went from 220 to 190 this summer ... but the weight is creeping up again.
-
Keep it up Rob. Since I started posting my "straight & narrow" post, I'm finding motivation in keeping myself accountable to y'all. Even if I want to have a little snacky-snack, I feel a twinge of guilt or an urge to run an extra 1/2 mile to make amends.
Keep it up, keep us informed, and stick to it.
Schro
-
OK....I know this is a long post (I know when I see alot of typing, I'm inclined to "skip" it).
But your input is always appreciated so bare with me.....
-----------------------------------------------------
so I'm not included in the police academy this January (boo hoo, time to move on). Consequently, I don't have the time constraints to "hurry up and get in shape."
I'm going to try something that I've been meaning to try that is quite similar to the program I was using pre-academy over the next couple of months. But this time it's a 6-month "baby steps" program leading to our family vacation in June of '08. (Always good to have a definite time-frame goal).
It's a method I've sorta "invented" in theory (i.e. no proto-type) taken from martial arts conditioning I've done and spoken of with others in martial arts.
We all know that being in great shape doesn't necessarily include being huge and bulky. (Although that's impressive when you can pull that off.)
Traditional martial arts conditioning doesn't necessarily include bulkiness or heavy weight training. (look at Bruce Lee for example). However, I propose to go beyond the "lower-weight, higher-rep" approach to toning. Utilizing the "ultra-high rep" approach I learned in my short dabblings in various martial arts.
When I studied Judo in the late-70's, early-'80's, I was in the BEST SHAPE I'VE EVER ACHIEVED. Our instructor had us GRADUALLY work up to where we were doing 100 pushups, 100 situps and 100 squats....all un-weighted. I recall it took about 6 months to a year to get to that point.
So, over the next 6-months I'm going to use this method and apply it to a weighted workout. Unorthodox? yes! Nay sayers? yes! (And I welcome y'all's comments pro or con.)
----------------------------------
It's pretty simple. But it does take a long-term commitment to consistent and gradual results.
I start out running 2 miles at about 5.0 mph. VERY BASIC AND--ACTUALLY--EASY. At the end of 6-months, I want to be at 8.5 mph for 4 miles (as taken from conversations with my buddies Paul and Schro and their current and/or former running capabilities).
Utilizing a spreadsheat, you take that 3.5 mph increase and divide it by 180 days (6 months) and mathmatically plot how you need to progress (that's what I did to get ready for the physical fitness test over a 2-month period -- and it was brutal because of the time frame -- but it worked).
Over 180 days that's an increase of 0.019 mph per day (0.58 mph per month). Do you increase yer speed by those anal little increments? _NO_!! It means you just need to hit certain increments periodically, so in my case I'll be running 2 miles at 5.0 mph for 5 or six days.....then on to 5.1 mph.....then on to 5.2 mph for 2.06 miles (8.25 laps) and so on. (Much easier using a treadmill where you just dial in the mph -- but I like to do a track run now and again which means converting the mph into time goals per lap [again, what I did for the Sheriff's testing]).
Do the same for weight loss. I want to lose 45 lbs by the end of May '08. Divide that by 180....that's 0.25 lbs a day which gives the incremental goals along the way (1.75 lbs/wk, 7.6 lbs/month). (For those who are not familiar with Excel spreadsheets, that's where you get the blue goal/progress line [above weight graph])
Do the same for push ups & sit ups. I'm starting with 3 sets.... 12 - 6 - 3 Again....EXTREMELY EASY...but in 6 months I want that to be 3 sets....100 - 50 - 25 (what I did back in the Judo days).
---------------------------------------------
So here's the unorthodox part. Why not apply that same principle to weight lifting? Start with various weights--depending on the body part / excercise--that are somewhat challenging at 12 reps, but not busting a testicle.
For example, I can bench 200lbs for 12 reps.......challenging but not busting a testicle. So I start with 200lbs for 3 sets: 12 - 6 - 3......and without ever increasing the weight, gradually--over the next 180 days--get to where I'm benching 200 lbs for 3 sets.....100 reps, then 50 reps, then 25.
Then do the same for the major body parts (bicep curls, tricep extensions, military presses, etc..etc...)
The first argument is that it would take a lot of time with so many reps. But when yer looking at only 3 sets, that 100 - 50 - 25 rep configuration for 8 body parts (if you did them all the same workout) with 1 to 2 minute rests between sets/body parts would run a total workout time of only about 50 minutes (assuming a 1-second rep ["one thousand ONE, one thousand TWO, etc.]).
Don't matter what camp yer from (high-weight / low-reps or low-weight / high reps), benching 200lbs 100 times would be DAMN AWESOME. It's like "HIGH-WEIGHT / SUPER-HIGH-REPS" thang.
So this is what I'm embarking on Dec. 1st to May 31st as the proto-type. We'll see how it works.
thoughts? comments?

My head hurts :/O.....
However you arrive at your goal is not as important as the actual arrival. One thing that's more important to weight loss as it relates to running is the duration of the run as opposed to the speed. Longer runs (i.e. time) will burn more kcals than shorter ones, regardless of speed (well, if you're walking that kills that theory).
I think you should concentrate on time rather than speed. Start your running part of your program with a certain duration (10, 15, 20 mins, doesn't matter). Every other week, add a minute. After 26 weeks, you've added 30 minutes. Don't forget the occasional day off of running. Or do other activities in place (bike, swim, ski).
I really can't add much to the weight training part of your plans, but the above is gospel.
-
Longer runs (i.e. time) will burn more kcals than shorter ones, regardless of speed
Absolutely....no argument there.
(well, if you're walking that kills that theory).
My argument exactly.....time + speed + distance (in whatever proportion is all important IMO)
I think you should concentrate on time rather than speed.
Again, IMO speed does play a decent role as I can crawl at 1.0 mph for an hour and that's the intensity my 83-year-old mother-in-law achieves pulling her basket, running her errands.
I got the 8.5 mph from you and Paul....as a GOAL....yeah it's not important now (sh** I can't do it NOW)....
But your 5 miles in 42 minutes = about 7.2 mph. And Paul's 3 miles in 20 minutes (at the time he retired from the military) = 9.0 mph are both damn decent no matter HOW ya slice it.
I think 8.5 mph for 4 miles is a good goal for me, ya selfish bastard :x!.
Also, I ain't no runner....but it seems if one is to win a marathon....maintaining a certain, winning pace in addition to time and the 26 miles is ALL important. (I understand it's the 26 miles yer arguing is more important than the speed)
Thanks for helping me think these thangs through O0
-
Just keep pushing yourself bro! You can't fail with the SBG crew behind you!
Thanks, Shdwwlk O0

Ya know, all of this planning is on the output. What do you plan on doing to reduce the input (i.e. food)?

Exellent point.....That's a critical ingredient.
That Isagenix cleansing program I wrote about a ways back in this thread works GREAT!

Schro is absolutely right; controlling your food intake is essential. No amount of exercise will take weight off if you don't change your diet.
Just remember that to lose two pounds a week, you have to have a caloric deficit of 1,000 every day. Be careful not to cut your calories much more than that because your body may go into starvation mode and slow down your metabolism.
Good luck. We all know you can do it.

Mathmatically speaking, how does burning calories fit in to that?.....seems like if you burn 500 calories a day then your intake deficit would be reduced to 500 calories.
-

Yes, that's right. You have to burn 3500 calories less than you consume to lose one pound of body fat. So if your caloric intake is 500 less than what you burn off, then by the end of one week, you should be one pound lighter. (500 calorie deficit per day x 7 days = 3500 calorie deficit for the week).
This is where it helps to know your resting metabolism rate -- that's the amount of calories you burn in a day from doing absolutely nothing. If you know what that is (most gyms and fitness centers can do a quick test to measure it for you), you know how to adjust the calories you take in to faciliate weight loss. When cardiovascular exercise enters into the equation, you should be running even more of a deficit.
If you're lifting weights, that will help build muscle which in turn burns more calories. Each additional pound of muscle burns an extra 50 calories per day. But bear in mind that muscle weighs more than fat, so if you're building muscle, you may not see the numbers on the scale changing the way you expect them to.

That's the complex way of looking at it. But I'll tell you what's a little simpler. Get a copy of "body for life" It follows the same principle, but makee it alot easier by reducinng the number crunching. I let a few people borrow my copy and they all lost some seriuos weight from it.
-
......Get a copy of "body for life"
Hell yeah ! I've followed that program or parts of it for the last 6 years (although not for 6 years straight).
Today I start my experimental "High-Weight / Mega-Rep" baby steps program.
Have before pics taken....will provide them with mid-point shots (March 1st) or after shots (June 1st).

Ok here are my stats:
Running: I’ve gone from running 2.0 miles @ 4.8 mph to 2.3 miles @ 5.2 mph --- Averaging 3.7 days a week (slightly above my goal) -- on track to gradually increase this to 4.0 miles @ 7.5 mph by the end of May (California Vacation )
Resistance: I’ve gone from reps of 12 – 6 – 3 (3 sets) to 22 – 11 – 5 --- Averaging 3.3 days a week (slightly below my goal) -- on track to gradually increase this to 75 - 38 - 19 by the end of may with pretty significant weight/plate settings
Weight Loss: Averaging 2.3 lbs per week (10.1 lbs per month) - gotta keep the average above 2.0 lbs per week to lose 45 lbs by the end of May.
The eating program (Don’t like the word “diet”) is working out really great, man. Slow carbs, veggies & protein….as much and as often as I like. Day off one day per week…..go NUTS….beer, Mexican food, donuts, candy….ANYTHING and EVERYTHING. What’s amazing is that you’d think you wouldn’t want to weigh in the very next day after the JUNK day….you’d think, BLOATING, WATER WEIGHT, and just plain ol’ junk still in yer stomach. But those are the days the scale dips by a pound or two. Weird…but I ain’t arguing
I gotta tell ya, knowing I’ll be updating you guyz….while I don’t lose sleep over it….it adds just enough incentive to make the difference between blowing off a workout and getting my ass to the gym.

Keep it up, Rob!!!!

sweet!!!!!! my son came home yesterday bragging about his time in the mile. 5:45 i just laughed and said i can run the mile in 5 flat (5 hours) :*))
-
Talkin about losing pounds and stuff....well i went out and bought one of those electric potato peelers....AWESOME.....
-
Ok...I'm gonna cut back my official accountability report to once every two weeks to my bros....
But I must again voice my astonishment at this slow-carb, one-day-off eating program (website provided earlier in this thread).
Just weighed in to see another 2-lb drop immediately following my mad-scarf-day-off. Usually I eat anything I want on the day off. Well yesterday was my first day off where I ate MORE than I wanted.
Like Mr. Ferris outlines in his program, I went out of my way to be ridiculous in my calorie intake. I literally ate--not all in one sitting--an entire loaf of fresh French bread...each slice loaded down with real butter, brie cheese and cherry jam. On top of that I ate probably about 10 Reeses Peanut butter cups (5 packs) with 8 ounces of whole milk after each pack. And throughout the day I polished off an entire 2-liter jug of Coca Cola....the real, sugar-laden stuff.
Just got off the scale and was 2 lbs lighter for a total of 8 lbs lost in 25 days (2.2 lbs per week avg).
Life is good when stuff goes right :@`
-
That's awesome Rob! I gotta get back on that plan full time. I'm doing about 70% of my meals that way, but I will be getting more serious in the next couple of days.
-
Great thread. This was a fun read. Rob, do you think your day on/day off is preserving muscle very well? That weight loss is awesome, but I wonder how much of that is lean mass. If you're reasonably maintaining lean mass, I'm instantly adopting that for my next cutting phase! :)
I was reading through, and you mention doing 200 lb benches for really, really high reps (50, 100). How is that going for you?
A few months ago I was hoping for something similar, but I approached it differently. I started doing 135 x 20, then 150 x 20, etc. And I got pretty far, but what I noticed was that I was putting in massive effort while my max was really suffering. Where I once could throw down 300 for at least a few easy reps, after this process, I couldn't even do one. My observation is that I think muscles will adapt themselves to a narrow range of reps--meaning either low reps, high weight, or really high reps, low weight, but I couldn't really succeed at both.
But I would love to see you prove me wrong! O0
-
Cameron, thanks for the dialogue....helps me sharpen up. Good points you bring up. O0
2 reasons I'm probably not losing muscle mass:
1 - I eat A LOT of protein
2 - I am doing resistance training (weights)
The "baby steps" / Super-high rep thing is actually an experiment. Believe me, I'm really tempted to throw on the plates and back off on the reps. But I'm gonna see this through for the next 4 months and see what the results are.
A couple things I'm noticing so far:
1 - I'm getting a bit of cardio added into the resistence training by doing so many reps
2 - I'm getting through the resistence training in far less time (I usually follow the Bill Phillips program of 6 sets per body part.)
A couple theories I have (since I'm not a knesiologist):
First: The idea of eventually benching 200lbs 75 times straight just simply SOUNDS RAD no matter how ya slice it. (I'm at 25 reps right now....1/3 the way there.)
Second: It seems like that would build muscle endurance.
I'm looking at getting back into martial arts (Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu). I know how it feels to be strong but burn out quickly when sparring. Yeah, a lot of that is cardio conditioning. But 16-oz. gloves get heavy way too quickly right now. So another experiment is if this approach might add the endurance (not to mention SPEED) component to simple power and strength.
Anyway....we'll see.
-
As long as you stay consistant the pounds should keep melting off. Eventually you'll plateau, then it's just a matter of maintenance and upkeep.
-
This whole thread gets me amped to get into training again.
My biggest vices are Beer and all manners of food. Thankfully my Better Half likes to cook healthy meals and keeps me check otherwise I'd be 300lbs. But in the past when I have gotten really serious about my fitness, I've been able to loose the weight easy enough.
Robmeister, I have lifted weights since I was 14(My Dad had his own weightroom in the rear of my Mothers hair salon, which was on our property) and I have always went the weight less reps over the less weight more reps route. I've never been the most cut of anyone but could always hold my own in strength and endurance. 3 years ago I was able to push up 250lbs twice which I was pretty happy with. I have sadly let myself go over the last 6 months or so. The result of sitting on my ass for 9 hours in a call centre but I get a lot of motivation for reading your posts on here.
Wish you all the best Bro in your continued progression!

Time for an update:
Here’s the deal to refresh the main impetus of this fitness thrust of mine.
June 4th we will be driving to So. Calif. to visit family & friends. Would like to lose 45 lbs by then (have lost 10 lbs and we’re ¼ of the way there, so I’m just a little behind). We’ll be staying at the Huntington Beach Hyatt (right on the beach). I’ll be teaching my son how to surf and getting’ on a board myself after many years. So there ya have it. For all those reasons I want to be a ripped stud when I strip down to my trunks.
All is well in all aspects of my program. Monday February 11, 2008 finds me a bit ahead on my running goals and just slightly behind on my resistance stuff. Also I’m just 2 lbs behind where I should be according to my progress chart. Have dropped another 2lbs for a total of 10 lbs in 38 days. That amounts to an average of 1.8 lbs per week (just shy of the 2 lbs per week I need to meet my goals).
Running, I’m up to 5.6 mph for 2.6 miles (from 4.8 mph for 2.0 miles).
Reps, I’m up to 30 – 15 – 7 (from 12 – 6 – 3) I’m starting to hit a wall so am pushing through some major BURN.
Onward and Upward !

Check this guy out. He's one of my online accountability buddy's (a SLY brother too!!)
Started out similar height and weight as me (6'1" - 250 lbs), but he's in his 50's, man.

Did the New Years resolution thang at the beginning of this year, did a round or two of Power 90....then a round or 2 of P90X and here's where he was at 9/28/08 (Day #270). Here he's down to like 185-190.

2 months later and he's still loggin' in his workouts 6 days a week, man.
And he ain't no isolated case......just a mellow dude from California fed up with luggin' around a bunch of extra luggage all day, everyday.......nor is he one of the published "winners" used in marketing.
Bottom line: THIS SH*T WORKS !!!
I have 246 days to go. That would.....**ehemm**...WILL be great to be so lean for Rocklahoma in July '09!!!

WOW!
Hell of a transformation.

Rob,
I didn't even notice the fact you were diagnosed with diabetes. Keep that in check. My mom was diagnosed diabetic (at the same time she was going through heart valve replacement and a underperforming thyroid). Man, the diagnosis was actually a blessing in disguise. As a result of getting her system right, she's dropped 45 pounds and feels better now than she has in many, many years.
Oh, I checked out that P90 website...amazing stories, incredible transformations. I'll post a note on my fitness points so not to hijack your thread.
Keep up the good work and Happy Thanksgiving to the Colorado Meisters (tell the kids their Uncle Schro sends them a big hug).

What kind of diet does this program involve? The website doesn't really say, or if it does, I couldn't find it. I think I'm already doing most of the exercises required. But one of my goals for the new year is to try and modify my diet so I can shed a few pounds of body fat.

They have a "wizard" that, based on inputs (age, weight, waist, etc...) it recommends a senible mix of carbs, protein, fats and caloric level. It's pretty dang handy because you then plug into the meal tracker and it tracks it all for you. You can design your own meals or follow their recommendations. I just design my own with what we normally have in the house.
Unless your doing the actual P90 / P90X workouts chances are that yer not doing what they do. Not that what your doing is wrong. But I've been working out off and on in different ways and for different time spans for 30 years. And I've NEVER done stuff like this. He (Tony Horton) does utilize some basic moves and exercises, but MAN--especially in P90X--he has ya doin' stuff that is downright BRUTAL.
P90X's thing is Muscle Confusion....never allowing your muscles to settle into a routine by utilizing combinations of Pilates, Power Yoga, Plyometrics, weights, body-weight stuff that indeed hit all the major (and minor) muscle groups but in an ever changing, change-up way that DOUBLES the shredding capabilities.
INTENSE STUFF.

OK....Day #55 of Power 90 and goin' pretty strong.
Made it through the holidays fairly unscathed.
Missed 3 days of exercise a couple weeks back due to cold/flu (I don't believe in working out through sickness).
Overall I've maintained workin' out 5.85 times a week!
Been losing inches much more readily than LBS. I've lost 2.5 inches and 3% BF in 54 days of P90. This to me is more significant than the 11 lbs I've lost.
But I'm "BRINGIN' IT" and averaging right around 2,100 calories per day on the nutrition part (higher Protein/Lower Carbs ---- and of course, NO ALCOHOL WHATSOEVER).
Weight: 236 (11 lbs lost) O0
Waist: 40.5" (2.5 inches lost) O0
BF%: 23% (3% lost) O0

Great job so far! Keep it up.

You are doing really well Robmeister, keep it up! I am currently dieting and training for a bodybuilding show in Denver on March 21, so I know how you feel!
-
Everything is going good except pound droppage.
At Day #75 of P90 I've dropped 14 lbs (that by itself is underwhelming) But inches lost = 3" and my blood work recently came back with GREAT news.
Triglycerides dropped 66%!! Total Cholesterol dropped 36%!! A1C levels dropped 42%!!
I have a bit of a challenge with the weight loss due to my diabetes meds. Some meds will actually cause you to GAIN weight, I switched off that right away. Got on another and while I ain't gaining, I have to really FIGHT HARD for every ounce, man. So the 3-5 lbs a week just ain't gonna happen. I'll settle for 1.5 to 2 lbs per week.
But other than that I can really see the sculpting coming through.....the "P90X" factor should really take me to a new level now that I'm familiar with how Tony Horton works and am familiar with some of the basic moves.
So everything has dropped pretty nicely except poundage. Which--wouldn't y'all agree--is the LEAST significant factor when compared to the others? And my energy has gone throught friggen ROOF man, I'm workin' 12 & 13 hour days - with no problem at all AND crankin' my involvement with the Fam and cub scouts.
So after 75 days of Power 90, I can't stand it any longer....I'm moving on to P90X!!! (so I effectively conquered "Power 75" as a foundation to start hangin' with the BIG BOYS). With all the results I'm seein' with my cronies over at P90X.com, I'm just too damn impatient and ordered "X" last night to get movin into the X factor.

I don't think a 14 pound weight loss in a little more than two months is underwhelming at all. It's right in line with the recommended 2-3 pound loss per week. You're just feeling impatient because you want the weight gone, which is understandable. But don't be so hard on yourself. Meds aside, it isn't easy to lose weight once you reach that "certain age". Remember that weight that is lost slowly is more likely to be kept off in the long term.
Excellent news on the other stats. Congratluations and keep up the good work.
