Hey guys....
I have been trying to gather up the nerve to go sly and I am petrified. I have been losing my hair since I was 16 and I am 35 now. I shave it using clippers down to a 3/8 cut, so I do like it short. I just don't know if I am ready to go to the shaved look. 1) I am afraid of having an ugly head, 2) being pasty white here in Wisconsin and 3) scaring my kids (lol).
I have enjoyed reading everything on the website, and I have gotten some great advice and testimonials. I have had some life changing events over the past year and I need a change.
I would greatly appreciate any words of wisdom out there as I get closer to the day.
Thanks.
-
dude, welcome. i think it will look sharp. you remind me of a younger schro (but don't remind him of his
age experience with life.) go for it bro. you are so close now that it reallty wouldn't be that big of a step. and if you decide that it ain't to your liking, it will grow back quickly. paulie
-
Welcome to forum. I think you'll look really sharp being sly. When I first did it, I was a little nervous too. It is great. I was in need of a change too and haven't turned back in two years. Keep us updated and show us the new sly you.
-
You are half way there bro...go for it. Like Paulie said...it will grow back quickly if you dont like it. But.....You must give it the 30 day run......then after that if you dont like it......well.....too bad youre stuck with it...cause if you shave your head everyday for 30 days straight you kill all of your root folicals and well they just wont grow back! LOL...just kidding bro...I think you would look great. AHHHHHHHH what the hell...just do it....at least once...you wont know until you try. Right???
Looking forward to seeing a new pic of ya....SLY!
See ya
Timmy

First off welcome to the forum tj. Great to have you with us. Second, it is pretty common to be nervous about any major change that someone makes in life. But if you are already clipping it short, it won't be much of a change. As Timm said, if for some reason you don't like it (and that is highly unlikely) it will grow back quick to where you are already at. Though from your pic you are gonna rock the sly look, bro. O0
-
Welcome TJ. I can vaguely remember being scared to death of the change, myself. From looking at your pic, I think you will look great. Just remember, life is just way to short to always be wondering about something you want to do. Especially this, since it will grow back. This would be the perfect time, since you have a long weekend coming up and if you don't like it, you'll have a good start on growing it back. My experience (and that of every other guy on this forum) is that our fears are way too overblown. It is usually only a big deal in our minds. Besides, once you get the idea in your head, you have to do the deed or it will just drive you nuts thinking about it.
Best of luck.
-
You got the bug ... now do the deed!
-
Wecome TJ. You've already gotten some great advice from the bros ....
I was as petrified as you before doing it. It was definitely awkward in the very beginning, but that very quickly transformed into freedom. I genuinely wish I didn't wait this long to do it.
Give it 30 days completely shaved. You're already buzzing it short ....
-
You've got a young-looking face. The horseshoe makes everyone look older. You could easily take 5 years off your appearance by getting rid of yours. Like the others have said, it will grow back in a few days in the unlikely event that you don't like it. The worst that can happen is that you have a few days with a haircut you're not thrilled with. The best that can happen (and the more likely outcome) is that you'll be thrilled with your new look, feel a lot more confident and ask yourself why you didn't do it sooner.
Another point to remember: when was the last time you saw a guy with a shaved head and thought, "That guy would look great if he only had a horseshoe of hair around the sides of his head? ::)
-
Welcome TJ!
You sit on the fence, now come on and jump. You will feel very very good having done the deed. It's a good start for 2008.
If you don't like it, it's just hair and it will regrow.

tj....welcome 2 the sly fraternity. glad tha ya found us. it's normal 2 b a little scared when U R thinking 'bout shaving your dome smooooth. we all have been there....however....since U R having thoughts about doing the deed, u will never ever B comfortable until u get a quality razor and shave that noggin'. btw...timmy is wrong u r not 1/2 there u R 85% there already. so... why don't u get the rest of the 15% taken off. i promise u ....that u won't regret it. anyways....with all that said... just do it when u r ready.

There ya go...bro....Awesome looking hair cut....

TJ, Razor reminded me of another point that helped to push me off the fence. Probably the thing that you are fearing the most is change and what other people will say or think. From the looks of your pic with the horseshoe, most people probably already consider you to be "bald". So why not take the leap. It's not as big of a leap as it probably looks from where you are at right now. I would much rather for people to say that I have a "shaved" head that to say "you know, that balding guy".
We're all behind you and we've been where you are right now.
-
I do that Rick....when I see someone wiht a horseshoe....Im like ok dude...take it off...looks like you have something from a windstorm stuck to your head and it hit you from the back and wrapped itself around your head. I dont know what their mission is. Do these guys with horseshoes....do they think it looks stylish...or is it that they are just really hanging onto the last bit of hair they have left. Im just asking TJ.....what is your view on the horseshoe? Not trying to be sarcastic...it is just that I have never asked a guy with a horseshoe.....Because more than likely if it is that they have it there cause they dont want to be considered "BALD'...well my friend....most people look at you from the front when they are talking to you....not the back...so what do you think they see when they talk to you? I have heard it over and over again..when someone is trying to point out a person in a crowd...."You see that guy over there who is Bald on TOP?" Well just do it bro....you wont be sorry.
-
TJ, welcome to Sly Bald Guys. These guys have all given you some great advice. Like anything in life, you won't really know what it's like to do something unless you actually do it.
-
I did it and it feels awesome. Not razored, but lowest setting on electric razor. FEELS AWESOME!!! Pics to come.
-
Way to go, my SLY Brother!!! O0 O0 O0
-
THREE CHEERS FOR TJ....HIP HIP HOORAY! HIP HIP HOORAY! HIP HIP HOORAY!.....now....lets take it one step further...just walk in there and do it. Shave it all off...come on...be a man! LOL...I dare ya....COME ON!....you can do it...please!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
I will burn the Red and Whites if you do.......
-
Way to go!! I'll bet it looks much better. At the risk of pushing too hard, I strongly suggest that you razor-shave now and get that noggin completely smooth. It won't make any difference to the rest of the world -- they don't make any distinction between a short buzz and a razor shave -- but the feeling is completely different. You are missing out on the best part of the whole experience if you don't shave it completely smooth. It will only take 24 hours to get back to where you are now, so it's a risk-free experiment.
Post those pictures when you can.
-
if it will get timmy to burn the red and whites, then i'll come shave yer head TJ. ha ha ha where are ya?
-
No brainer bro...
Shave the mother clean...
and merry (late) christmas...my gift to you!
-
Good for you. Go ahead and razor it, seriously. Now is the best time while it is really short.
-
JUST DO IT ALREADY!
-
TJ, don't listen to these old timers, no offense guys. You need advice from a younger dude, like myself. Word up bro, Slic Ric says congrats for buzzing your hair. Now take out a fresh razor, get out some shaving cream and Headshave.
You won't be sorry.
And you'll appreciate these newly acquired benefits~
-ease of maintenance
-it's cooler
-it looks tough and intimidating
-nothing for someone to grab in a fight
-high CDI (Chicks Dig It) factor
-
Excuse me there Eric....lol....ummmmm i aint old yet......lol
-
Excuse me there Eric....lol....ummmmm i aint old yet......lol
Tim, Crank Dat Souljaboy! :x!
That was a "play on words". You've been here longer than I, right!
-
Just by what? 4 months....but what other bald guy forums have you or are you members off?? I have been shaving for 6 months...lol
-
TJ, I'm late to the game here, but I'm happy that you 'did the deed.' You will definitely rock the look and gain a new, more youthful look. People think I am in my early thirties, and I assure you, I'm not. Definitely take the razor to it now. The guys are right; it's a whole other level when your head is razor smooth.
-
Here are the pics.....
-
MUCH BETTER....now where are the razor shots?????
-
TJ, I see you already have the SLY attitude. Very cool. O0

TJ, it looks awesome brother. You already have lost that 'old guy' look that the horseshoe gives people. Your head shape looks really good too. Now, go get that razor, and take it to the next level. I can already see the confident new look on your face. Way to go!
-
Really rocking it now tj. But gotta warn you, you won't be happy now till it is slick smooth, so you may as well give in now and get 'er done before the new year.
-
Welcome and congratulations, TJ. The SBGs are right. That smile on your face will get even bigger once you give the dome the once over with a good razor. You look like you're happy with the buzzed tight results...and BALDANDRE did another awesome photo transformation. Enjoy that "numb" feeling on your head once you go for it...it doesn't last too long.
-
. Enjoy that "numb" feeling on your head once you go for it...it doesn't last too long.
Is there anyone else that feels the same way...that you sorta wish you could experience that "numb" feeling again? I wish I could.
OK OK enough enough....I hear you all....No im not a numb skull like most of you think I am...LOL
-
Lookin good TJ. Looks great but will be even better when you take it all the way down ...
-
I'm also soon going to have to join the ranks of the Sly Bald Guys! I've been losing my hair for several years (decades really) and just don't feel lkie looking like som many other mid-forty age men in my community. I currently have what little hair I have left buzzed to 1/4 inch and just don't feel ready to let the rest go.
Good Luck to you Andrew!

Dej, welcome to Sly Bald Guys! You've already made the first step by joining up here. Now it's just time to give the ol' shave a try. With a 1/4 inch buzz right now, it wouldn't take you long to grow that back if you don't like the look.
-
Thanks, I'm really working on it! I'm not comfortable with the little hair I have and usually wear ball-caps everywhere including in the office or when eating out. This is getting old and I'm not sure I want to continue. Maybe the next trip to the barber will be shorter than the 1/4 inch just so I get a better feel for what a totally smooth noggin will be like.
-
Welcome dej to the forum. While you may not feel comfortable NOW with the little hair you have left you WILL see a jump in comfort AND confidence when you do decide to go sly. Being sly brings an entirely new perspective to your life and once you embrace it you will experience a freedom and confidence you hadn't know before.
-

DEJ.....even though you go to the barber and get it cut shorter.....you will not experience the full effect unless you just shave it off. It is just hard to convience someone of that, because take a person like yourself, you have never experienced a smooth noggin. I am sure all of us who are slick now...probably thought the same thing...well i will just shave it down really really short to see if I like it. Well that does not compare to taking it all the way down. Once you do it, you get a sense of relief and its that initial reaction from yourself that is priceless. I just wanted to say to anyone who is thinking about going completely smooth, just do it, you wont regret it at all. Look at all of us, we did it without regrets. The key thing is though, do it when you are ready. No one can force you to do it. Good Luck and hope to see some pics of you and your SLY SLICK NOGGIN.

Trip to the barber? Grap some clippers and go to town. You will love it, trust me.

Spoken like a true veteran, TJ. It is liberating to shave your head for the first time!

It looks really good, and a great example to others worried about the final step. You look younger, everyone looks better w/o the "horseshoe" but you've probably already heard that several times. Welcome to fully Sly, it's going to be a great ride.

Hey, That looks real smooth. O0 O0

Bald brutha, hold that head up high. 8)
May I suggest you give the Jergen's product ncblue recommended a try.
It will add some natural looking color to your newly shaven head.
I used it and it really works.

In the words of Borat - "Very Nice!"
That's one of my favorite Borat lines. He said it when approaching an attractive woman. He said "Very nice ... how much?"

Keep it smooth, bro.

Hey, I'm only a week ahead of you...I've been buzzing for about 10 years (I'm 45 now), and I finally decided to go all the way this morning. I'm also in Wisconsin, and I was a little worried about the pasty white thing as well...I finally decided I'd be happier with a little two-tone action than waiting another four months to finally shave my head. That aspect of it actually isn't as noticeable as I thought it would be. My advice would be to go for it! I think you'll notice a bit of a difference without a had outside, but it's not going to be a huge one. It's supposed to get to -30 tomorrow, and at that point anyone without a hat is pretty much kissing his ears goodbye.
Good luck!
