Title: Prescription glasses?
Post by: Robmeister on November 30, 2006, 09:05:59 AM
Hey Gang,

This is a spinoff of the sunglasses post.  Yes, cool shades are an awesome fit with a well-kept plate.

What about the prescription glasses look with the chromedome? (not prescription sunglasses--that's a no brainer, but plain ol' spectacles) Have any of you found it "doesn't quite fit" and have gone to contacts?

I would be unable to say yay or nay personally, but I feel anyone could pull it off. Yeti pulls it off quite nicely as a matter of fact. I feel it would add an intellectual quality to the individual wearing them.

Yeah...I had Yeti in mind, thinking his look is cool.  Didn't know how it fit me and don't recall who else on this site has included pics with glasses.

You mention the intellectual quality....It is getting interesting...the branching facets of the looks that are burgeoning for chromedomers.  One of the original looks (especially for bigger white guys) is the tough, "I-wouldn't-mess-with-him" quality.

I resinated with the aspect you hold significant....that when your daughter starts dating, your look might dissuade would-be "disrespecters" of her.

Anyway, "intellectual quality"??.....good observation.  Thanks

Yes, the biggest advatage I find is the intimidation factor. Works well when drinking in the bar and someone wants to start crap.

I think one of the things a bald head can do for glasses is allow more choices.  When you have hair, you almost have to choose a pair that looks good with the overall style that you choose.  But, with a bald dome, you're more of a blank canvas.  You can go with various types of glasses.

If you get the right kind of glasses(ie that go well with your eyes) they dramatically enhance the bald look.

Case in point:

I have worn glasses since I was 8 years old (that’s 24 years if anyone’s counting). And it's kind of odd, but I found that for years I found my glasses to be a distraction to myself and others. It was something that attracted stuff like "four eyes' and other bullshit teasing. My answer was to find wire rims with the smallest lenses I could find. I wanted to draw attention away from the fact that I wore glasses.

As time wore on and I started performing music at renaissance festivals, glasses became impractical to say the least. So, I switched to contacts full time and had a full head of long curly red/blonde hair. I wore contacts full time for about 2 years and finally got tired of all the hassle that comes along with them.

When I shaved my head for the first time I was wearing an older pair of my glasses. black plastic frames that looked kinda geeky (which makes sense in that I AM in fact a big geek, I have developed into a big scary, geek). But I noticed that with my head shaved and my ears pierced at 0g, the glasses were suddenly a kind of striking addition to my face.

I think that bigger, thicker framed glasses look best with shaved heads. Since then I have worn 3 different pairs of prescription glasses and I always lean toward more ‘eye catching” frames. Now using them as a full time accessory rather than trying to hide them.

I have found that I don’t do much half-assed anymore. I tend to make more bold statements in my clothing and general appearance than many around me do. I have bold tattoos in plain site and have large earrings, I wear UtiliKilts just about every day and have never been more comfortable with myself physically than I am right now (ok, I need to start working out more, but otherwise...). Choosing to shave my head fulltime has definitely been a big part of my personal evolution. I stand out in a crowd and grin at the rest of that crowd as I wade through them every day.

In short, Go bald, go bold!

In case this doesn’t make sense to anybody but me, it’s after 2:30 in the morning....  bear with me.

Great post Vash!

I wear contacts and stopped wearing glasses because of the sports I played.  When I did wear glasses (before shaving my head) I also went for rims that looked virtually invisible.  But my wife and I recently went to get her some glasses and I was trying some on while I was in the store.  Everything I liked was also a thicker frame.

I have those glasses that are rimless. They looked good with hair, but after shaving I wasn't digging them so much. I used to have some black thick frames- wish I had them now. It's crazy how different hair can make you look.

I have both glasses and contacts, but everyone I know says I look better in my glasses.  My wife says that they frame my eyes well and that I look more sophisticated with them on.  If I get into it with someone and I take them off, they know a storm is coming! LOL

I used to wear john lennon like glasses and I looked like a real hippie while I had hair but it doesn't fit anymore now, it makes me look like a crazy german scientist ! Instead, I bought full rim glasses with a classic and a bit geeky shape that fits much more.

I've been wearing glasses for about 20 yrs and like Tyler, have tried to find rims that are as close to invisible as possible. Personally, I think the SLY look is better without glasses, but I have no desire to have Darth Vader stick a light saber in my eyes for lasik. I wear contacts for sports and have no issues with them. Guess I'll just have to let my slyness speak for itself to pull off the glasses + chrome dome look.

Oh on a side note, I'm down to 201 lbs since coming back from Vega$ a month ago (-8 lbs). Granted that was at a high point, but it's still 4 lbs less than what I was at New Year's. I was pretty jazzed when I got on the scale today. Hopefully I can keep it up to reach my goal of 195 by my b-day (one month).

I normally wear contacts and was wondering about my new look with my glasses the other day.  I have the extended wear contacts, so i normally take them out when I shower and put them back in when I get out.  I've left them out the last few nights and although it does make me look different than I'm used to seeing myself, I don't think it looks bad.  I do prefer contacts so that I can wear my "cool" shades, but I don't necessarily think I would go out and get contacts to go with the sly look.  I do recommend trying contacts, just for the sake of trying something new.  That's why I got my first ones and I haven't gone back.

The current picture in my avitar shows me without glasses but normally I wear glasses.  I think I look good with glasses and contacts.  But since I work in a carpet store/warehouse, there are a lot of fibers in the air, so I thought it was better to skip the contacts now.  But I do miss wearing cool shades.  At least I have "Transitions" glasses that turn dark.

I usually wear glasses to watch tv, look at the computer, and read.  I just had to start doing this about 2 years ago because I got changed positions at my last employer that required to stare at a computer screen all day and read tiny little numbers off of drawings.  It effected my eyes so I had to get glasses.  But anyway, my wife thinks they look great on me.  I'm not real big on them.  But they do give me that "intellectual" look.  But I prefer to go without them if I can.

I'll be picking out a new pair of prescription glasses in a couple of weeks. I have been wearing them since I was 7 (that would be 48 years ago!), and I'm darn near blind without them.

The last several years, I have been getting glasses that matched my hair, which is/was gray. Now I need to decide what looks good with my sly look!

Only issue I have is that my glasses where chosen with my hairstyle and color in mind, so without the hair they didn't quite "fit" anymore. I've gotten used to it though, which is good as my glasses are expensive even after insurance so I'm not going to just go out and replace them unless I need to.

Tried it once when I was younger, never will again. I have trouble even putting eyedrops in so trying to put a lens onto my eye was an ordeal and getting it out again is something I never want to repeat.

Besides if I ditch the glasses then I lose my intellectual look.

I buy my eyeglasses from www.zennioptical.com. Very pleased.  My last order was $166 delivered. Included FOUR pairs of lenses and frames.  One was a sunglass for my daughter. Two were bifocals and one distance only with magnetic sunglass stick on.

At this price, even if something goes wrong with fit or something, just order more. Instead of paying the local optician $350 for ONE pair of glasses with a guaranteed satisfaction.

I have a pair of round glasses that I wear with my 1700's costume.  Some Rx Sunglasses, Some work glasses, Some distance only.  Just a bunch for different applications.  At this price.  You can afford multiple pairs.

Mr Zed - you have bifocals ? I have two prescription strengths: one for reading and one for distance. Don't think I'm really for bifocals yet.

For anyone in the UK whose just got a new prescription and want to keep an existing pair of frames, I recommend Ciliaryblue to get your glasses reglazed. About £40 for new lenses.

Mr. J .... actually, I have an Rx for trifocals. Love them, but hate the price.

Zenni only make Progressive lenses for a tri-focal prescription.  Really dislike progressives.  I've tried them several times.

Been wearing multi-focal glasses for probably 30 years.

Prefer single vision for the computer.  But really need at least bi's for general life except movies/shows and recreation. My reading lens is about +4.5 (pretty strong), plus astigmatism which makes everything blurry, close and far without glasses.

Sounds like your eyesight is worse than mine. 'Only' +3.25 for reading. +1.75 for distance. Only a question of time before I follow you into the world of bifocals.

PS ... just shaved my head with Headblade and Gillette sensor blade. Better result than with HeadBlade own razors. Probably smoothest result I've had so far. Happy Saturday for me.  :)

The resolution of that photo, when shown full size, makes it look like fuzz. But I suspect it is the artifacts of the photo and not really fuzz. LOL.

I really like trifocals. I was used to them in less than 1 day.  Don't care for the center distance when I'm on the computer all day, but that's why I have separate computer glasses.  For quick sessions on the computer, trifocals are OK.

Have to give a try to the alternate razor blade, when I run low on headblade blades.

Someone did send me a sample future headblade which is black and has a different adapter, but I did not care of the combination. Still like the original headblade mechanism.

If you've got two different prescriptions for reading and for distance, then you're already there.  It's just a matter of putting the two prescriptions together in a single pair of glasses instead of having to keep track of two pairs.

Razor X,

You've heard about the British NHS ?

Eye tests are covered by the NHS and the standard fee is £20, I think. For the children, unemployed and seniors, the test is free. But you pay for your glasses.

Everyone here in the UK also pays a standard NHS fee for prescription drugs, which from memory is £7.40. Numerous groups of the UK population are exempt from this payment.

Thanks.  I always thought that eye exams were covered in full and that there was an allowance for glasses as well -- that you could, in theory, get glasses for free, but if you wanted anything stylish or other than standard issue, you paid the difference out of pocket.  Sort of the same arrangement many of us in the US have through private insurers.
Title: Re: Prescription glasses?

If you are unemployed here in the UK, think the NHS will give you vouchers towards new glasses. A friend of mine, took advantage of this. They are not great specs !

The NHS also provides free or subsidised dental care for everyone. And we all get free visits to the GP, and free medical care including counselling, if your GP think you need it. It's all pretty generous.

Current government is trying to make some reforms to the NHS. It's not going down well with voters. Most politicians know the our beloved NHS is something of a national religion here.

The other day, it hit me for the first time about life and my appearance without glasses. Started wearing glasses back in 2009.

Was at the barbers having my beard trimmed, and I took my glasses off beforehand. The barber started trimming my beard and asked me to check before continuing. Without even thinking about it, I put my glasses back on to check the barber's work in the mirror. I now realise that I can only see myself properly in the mirror with my glasses on !!

Handheld mirror or the one on the wall?

I'm having a lot of trouble with eyestrain and I'm pretty sure I need a new prescription. Unfortunately I won't be eligible for an eye exam until after the first of the year. I'm looking forward to getting the matter resolves d but also dreading the inevitable increase in the amount of equipment (glasses,  sunglasses, contacts] that I'll need.

At the barbers, it was the mirror on the wall. Are you far (plus prescription) or near sighted (minus prescription) ?

I have both distance (+1.75) and reading prescriptions (+3.25).

When getting a new prescription, why not consider keeping your existing frames and just changing the lenses. This service is available here in the UK, which is what I did last time around.

I'm nearsighted and have been wearing glasses since fourth grade (age 9).  One of the "benefits" of getting older is that my nearsightedness has been diminishing for the last ten or so years.  Now the bad news: my reading vision has deteriorated!

What happens now is that about every two years, I need new glasses because the distance prescription has to be lessened and the close-up prescription has to be strengthened.  I first notice the need for a new prescription when fine print becomes hard to read.

This is called presbyopia. As you reach your late 30s, your eyes start to lose their ability to focus between different distances - the lenses stiffen and the muscles weaken, too.

If you already near sighted, then you'll find it easier to read without your glasses. But then you'll need a separate reading prescription.

Then there others, like me, who never wore glasses. At first you notice reading becoming more difficult and you begin with reading glasses. Then the eyes loose their ability to focus clearly on distance objects, too. This why you can go from no glasses to separate distance/reading prescriptions in a few years.

My wife started wearing ready glasses about six years ago.  Now she has trouble with distance vision, too, particularly at night.  We'll be driving in the car and I'll read a sign and she'll say "how can you read the sign this far away?"  The answer she prefers to hear is that my glasses are good, not that her vision is bad!

Same thing happened to me. After several years of reading glasses, I then noticed difficulty with reading stuff at night. I also noticed difficulty in reading the credits on the telly. I caved in, had an another eye test, and now wear distance glasses all the time. And switch to reading glasses as I need too.

My distance glasses react to sunlight and are the ones you see in my profile pic.

Farsighted, +1.5 & +1.75--I use multifocal contact lenses that let me focus close for reading and far for driving or whatever--it just sort of happens, the lenses don't move.  The lenses focus both images on the retina and the brain separates out the view that I need.  I have some bifocals that I wear at night after I take the lenses out--but I'm usually only using my contacts.  I find the bifocals a pain in the a$$, except at night.  The contacts are sort of like having normal eyes, really.

I'm nearsighted and have been wearing glasses since fourth grade (age 9).  One of the "benefits" of getting older is that my nearsightedness has been diminishing for the last ten or so years.  Now the bad news: my reading vision has deteriorated!

My nearsightedness is not diminishing but I'm having more trouble with reading fine print than I used to, and my eyes just don't adjust as quickly as they used to be when I switch from reading something up close to looking at something across the room, like the television.

I like my vision very clear. Typically things get somewhat blurry at about 9 months. (frown). My appointment is Monday morning at 10.  Last Rx was December 2011.  The exam is not too expensive. We get a negotiated price, but  no cash payment from our insurance.

I can't afford the eyedoctor's glasses. I get mine with ZenniOptical.com. That way I can afford several frames/lenses each year.  I've been satisfied with their products ... although they don't do trifocals, and I don't like progressives. So I typically get two bifocals. One distant and middle and one middle and close. That works.

In the States, how much is an eye test ? Here in the UK, we have a fixed rate of £27 for everybody (about $40 dollars).

Two sets of differing biofocals, Mr Zed ? That's impressive.

The 'list' price at the doctor's office is $123! Yikes.

I believe that our negotiated price is about $70.  I'll know tomorrow when I have to pay.

The mid and close glasses typically stay at work for when I'm on the computer all day.  The other pair is for daily living. I can read some things with the middle distance, or make the print larger on the computer.  The middle range works well for playing the piano and other mid-distance reading.

The close lens is for more serious reading or Rx bottles and the fine print. Did they always make the fine print so small?

The doctor's office glasses may be as much as $350!  Zenni optical starts at $6.96 for single vision. Add $17 for bi-focals. That includes frames!

It would probably cost more than that just to walk through the door before they even started examining you.

I find that sunglasses look even better being Sly and styles can ehance the look. As for prescriptions, I have to agree it is harder to settle on a style that works as easily when I had hair. I shy away from the look to be honest but have to weigh eye strain too. Give me shades any day.

Gives you the look.

Agree with you there.

Drifted into wearing glasses full time about 2 years ago. Now I think my face looks odd without specs !

Baldchav, thought about wearing contacts, too. But happy sticking with glasses.

Thought about wearing your glasses to go with your sly looks ?

I was just thinking about this matter.  And I started wearing glass's in the 4-5th grade.  First set of contact's I had were hard lense's  what a pain in the eye and a wind come up and blow them out.  Now my conacts are soft and can breath I do take them out each nigh but wear glass's half the time and contacts half the time.

I also have the metal frame as you do TSB, and the lenses change to sun glasses.   I think these glass's work well with the SLY look.  It is funny when I wear my contacts, I have to wear reading specks at the computer.  And then sun glasses .  I just can't get away with out glasses.

I've been wearing glasses since I was seven. Today, I wear a combination of glasses and contact lens. I've had no problem wearing glasses with a bald head and goatee, but have had with a beard. I know it is mostly lack of confidence in my appearance. Then again, I'm also the type who likes the punk rocker and biker looks. I felt awkward. Thankfully, you guys have inspired me to go for the full beard for a while.

Funnily enough, I love other looks. In this time of year, I am big on pea coats, scarves, and hats. I enjoy the fact people have commented that I look like a professor.

I've experienced the same ambivalence about the bald head and glasses look. Not sure why since I think it looks fine on other people.  I'm slowly getting over it.

The professor comments will pick up when you're a little older. I think it has more to do with the glasses and beard than the shaved head.

Ditto on the getting over the glasses with the bald head and beard. I figure I could do something where it is preppy meets punk, and get away with it.

As for the professor comments, I actually enjoy them. Being that I feel like I'm an old man (stylistically) in a young man's body, I find it amusing that one of my "nicknames" is actually Sir.

Have you been talking to my pals over here in London ?  ;)

Because the 'professor' thing is starting to stick on me now.  :(

Ok Prof's .

Reminds me of the old movie Outlaw Josey Whales !  The old chief looks through the pc. of candy and say's this ain't for eating but looking threw !  When it

comes right down to it !  We all have different idea's as to what looks good with out facial feature's, etc.. I have really enjoyed all the idea's , and posts here

and have to admit the beards, etc. with glass's I can appreciate.  And being called a prof. is a compliment as people see knowledge, wisdom, experience,

attitude etc..  Also the way a person is dressed as also been brought up with good merits.

Thank you for your indulgence in this matter.
